I heard a film industry insider explaining this a few years ago. He said that creativity had taken a back seat to money. In the past it was certainly about both. In more recent times, producers' advisers had discovered that to keep their jobs a safe play was to advise a remake or sequel to something that had been a hit. When WOKE entered the already fragile mix that was the beginning of the end. Like Carl, and clearly a lot of other people, we can't watch anything made in the last twenty years. My disbelief is no longer suspended when the plot is centred on a rainbow family, or Mary Queen of Scots is a woman of African heritage. They've treated their audiences as mugs and are now reaping the consequences.

So I was watching 'The Last Kingdom' on Netflix. Brilliant.... 4 seasons and brilliant. I was cross checking on the history and all was good. It all tallied. Royal struggles, formation of England, Vikings, Danelaw. All (with dramatisation, obviously) good. Then I hit season 5. I stopped after 15 minutes as the King rode into Winchester with a Sub Saharan Priest. I mean full on Congo. I checked... 'first balck priest in England' - and came up with 1750. Now this series is set circa 950 AD. So my point: Obviously NORTH African were a thing since the Roman Empire. No problem. But FFS, not someone from central Africa. And to make matters worse, when he rode into town no one batted an eyelid. Like this guy is pure ebony and not one english peasant looked up and said a word. I mentioned this on a review site and of course was flamed to hell, because... racist. No, not at all. I was enjoying the embellished historical account. And expected authenticity, more or less. I asked if it improved as the season progressed... a couple of honest folk said 'No, don't bother because later on an entire tavern gets taken over by men of Islam'. Of course, Mohamed had not been born at this time :/ So yea, I quit. Season 4 had a good 'natural' end to it anyway and for sure I would reccomend those seasons.... I was also told that they had to fill their diversity quota. Says it all really.
