I have a Helix 5 and it's my very first fish finder. I'm happy with it but then, I fish the same river over and over. The thing about rivers is they are constantly changing. Every time we get a good rain something is different. And it might be just bank erosion or new brush and trees that washed down but it's always different. I know this river intimately so questioned myself when I bought this unit but at the end of the day, it put me on fish in spots I had never fished before and probably wouldn't have ever fished had I not bought the Hummingbird or some other fish finder. The only knock against it for an old man like me is that it isn't a little easier to learn for tech challenged folks, like myself. It's been a process. Thankfully I'm not ashamed to ask for help and there are people out there, like yourself, who are good at speaking plain language when demonstrating different things.

Perfect timing! I'm a newly retired first time fish finder user looking at these 3 units for 500$. I was still trying to decide. I was asking questions at bass pro and the guy couldn't answer my questions about when the fish scrolled across the screen, where was that in the cone. He didn't know anything about a cone. Your website is saving the day for me. thank you

In general, the TI units are faster in response to inputs. This is seen when quickly switching between sonar, downscan, chart, and split screens kzbin.infoUgkxeAxH15LxhjGlg5-CRYqjTGTEH0tbY4vk recommend The Hook units will show some lag on button pushes and screen switching. The big ticket item though is maps. If you install a mapping card such as Navionics or the free C-Map Genesis which has a lot of map detail, then moving around the map with the cursor or when running down the lake can lag significantly on the Hook units, but is seamless with the TI units.

I know it is over a year ago you made this video but it has been very hard for me to find a clean and clear analysis of the available units in this price range until I found yours. So, thanks. I'm sure you've heard it before but 1 as an average angler spending 1200 on a electronics is a perfect way to cause me to suffer a stroke. I like how you have presented the material and don't belittle anyone for considering purchase of these pieces. Lots of us love to fish but have to purchase tackle and so forth from less than the high priced chains. I also was, am very frustrated with the topo map situation. Something that stopped me from purchasing two years ago when the lakes I live near, toilet bowl ponds compared to the midwest and places with real water, are not included in the available charts. Combined with the AZGF being determined to destroy any bass fishery with foreign cat and trout stocking I'm ready to say to hell with it. But I love fishing and I'm going to put the effort into dragging my boat to the western edge of AZ in hope of finding some better fisheries. thanks again

I got the Garmin Striker 7 Vivid SV, because I fish only one lake and because it uses less power. My boat is a 1969 aluminum V-hull with a 1969 Evinrude 25hp w/electric start. The motor does NOT charge the battery, so that one deep cycle battery has to start my motor and run my electronics. Eventually I'll probably get another battery if it appears this one can't keep up, but I'm gonna try it for a while first. I can always pull start the motor, but I'm 70 years old and it's a bother. Total cost for the Garmin delivered to the door was $560.

Got a little worried. My Garmin comes tomorrow… lol I am new to fishing and bought a boat that had a Garmin and the previous owner left all the cabling and transducer so I just went with that. After this video I may have been swayed a little bit but I hope the contours aren’t a big deal for me. I plan on fishing the same few bodies of water with an occasional trip to a new spot. So I think I still made the right choice! Time will tell, then I’ll probably want an upgrade anyway.

For that price range ($300-350), all the units for different manufacturers will be similar. Understand that CV means downing imaging only, no side imaging in this unit. Usually side imaging units (new) cost $500+. It is a decent unit for that price range.

I would look for a used Garmin echomap 73sv uhd. Typically, they go on sale for $599, but you could find a used one for less. If you wanted to buy new: either the lowrance hook reveal tripleshot or garmin striker SV. Both those units should be less than $600. I don't believe humminbird makes the helix 5 with side imaging anymore, the new helix 5s only have DI.

Why don't fishfinders have a doppler type system, so in other words, two sonars fitted to boat, each pinging and receiving signals, by decoding those returns one can know exactly where the fish is and its depth in relation to the boat. So for a top view the fish would be port and 10m at a 45° angle and 5m deep. Surely this can't be so difficult?
@FloppingCrappie2 жыл бұрын
The more advanced fish Finders do have this technology. They are able to plot out a 3d picture of the bottom showing where an object is relative to the surface and lake bottom. However, these units /transducers typically cost well over $2k.
