Love this piece and your beautiful fluidity!! I am at a place in my work with watercolor after many years, knowing a change MUST come and I find myself leaning towards more fluid movement and sponteneity, seems that is what makes me happiest!! Will definitely be seeing you again!! My work has always been very splashy but finding myself wanting more:)

I love you painting style! I would love to learn to paint loosely like this since my style is so tight. I have sketch club app. Perhaps you would consider giving a tutorial on using sketch club as a composition tool?

That’s been asked of me before.. I will sometimes show my students little things on Sketch Club connected to a tutorial in my courses

I truly love how your work develops! You seem to have great intuition about your painting. Would you say that you have an overall plan or watch and take leads from your paint? It looks like you do the later, and have grown by doing. ❤️ Hope I can get that comfortable some day!
@raeandrews19253 жыл бұрын
Hi Carol thank you for your inquiry on how I approach my work. Most of the time I would say I’m very intuitive and generally, I always have been. So many times I don’t plan at all.. I just let the paint play and then I find my subject in the paint later on. That’s not to say that I’ve never planned a painting because I do.. I look at photographs or I might look at a scene I’ve seen while I’ve been walking, and I do a mental note of it, That way I can generally have an impression of that particular scene in my mind.. Maybe the colors, maybe the values, or maybe shapes have attracted me, and that would be what I try to portray in my painting. I am publishing a book right now on watercolor techniques which will be available on Amazon when it’s released. That will be probably a couple more weeks you might be interested in getting it.

I love to watch your magic. Could you explain a bit about the Sketch Book app that you mentioned? How did you “doctor” your reference photo?
@raeandrews19254 жыл бұрын
Cynthia the SketchClub app is available to iPad users or Mac I believe ... I have used it for many years and I have taught students how to use it in their own art here in my studio.......there are many tutorials on KZbin on how to use this app and I suggest if you’re interested , you perhaps should go there first.... it’s a little too complicated to explain it here. But it’s a photo altering app, if that’s the way you want to use it .....or you can use it from scratch and make your own images a lot like Photoshop... but not quite as sophisticated or complicated. It works in layers just like Photoshop but not as many layers as Photoshop allows. I think sketch club has probably up to 20 layers if the artist needs that. Are usually only use about four layers of fat. What I do is transport my original photograph into SketchClub and I use my stylus to drag some of the colors and put them in different areas and soften certain areas so that it looks a little like a watercolor. I also use the app to transport my painting into my iPad and try some different color combinations over my painting before I might put paint to paper ....that way I don’t want to make any mistakes on my originL painting and it’s a safer strategy. The app is only $2.99 to put on your iPad and there are tutorials in the SketchClub app as well but KZbin is a good source for visuals if you need that. I hope that helps and thank you for your question

Rae, another beautiful painting 😃 how much do you plan your paintings, or do they just evolve after the initial washes? Sarah
@raeandrews1925 Жыл бұрын
Thank you for your question Sarah, I do sometimes loosely plan my paintings however, I never stick completely to the original plans. I have used photographs as my initial reference for things sometimes two or three at times and other times I just get a thought in my head and think I want to paint ..oh, let’s say an orange flower. And I’ve done so many flowers that I can usually paint one out of my head and with the help of the watercolor properties, so it becomes less stilted and relaxed which I love. I very rarely do a complete preliminary drawing of what I’m going to paint. I mostly try to get a subject to come out of the paint and that keeps my work very unfocused and not so planned looking. But having said that, I go where the mood takes me ..
