I never ever shipped jo and laurie, not even as a child. I loved amy and laurie’s romance, and i think how she was in europe made me fall in love with her character. She’s beautiful, intelligent, artistic and refined. She’s exactly the same as Jo and that’s what people miss! She’s got the same ambitions, but the thing is she’s pragmatic and plays by the rules, by being feminine, and not everyone likes feminine women characters who are also strong. She gets what Jo should have had (that she didn’t deserve and didn’t want) and that’s why people hate her.

Yup. I quite agree. As a teen and now as an adult, I never once shipped jo and Laurie. But I also didn't fall in love with Amy-Laurie pairing. Me too, I saw Jo and Laurie dance together and although I found that so cute and silly, I didn't really like them together, but the way Amy spoke her mind to Laurie when he visited, and the way that at first she refused him for just choosing her for a second choice instead of Jo really hit hard for me and when they got together it made me really happy.

Louisa Alcott was gay. She stated she'd fallen in love with "many a pretty girl and never once a man". She didn't actually intend to marry off Jo in the books, but the publisher insisted the main character needed to have a love interest. In real life she DID go to Europe and based Laurie on a Polish boy she developed a close relationship with, in the novel she chose to give both the trip and the boy to her sister instead. It was actually the publication of Little Women that funded Abigail May Alcott's eventual real-life trip to Europe to study painting, and May was in real life a serious artist and not a husband hunter; she did not marry until her late 30s to a Swiss man 16 years younger than herself. She died shortly after her daughter was born and Louisa raised May's child until she herself died. It is unlikely that Alcott saw her sister as a rival or thought of her as shallow or a gold digger; it would seem rather that she used her fiction to give her sister the secure life she wished for her.

In my opinion, she is only “unlikable” as a child, and even then, she is a CHILD. The only thing I can think of that made her unlikable is when she burned Jo’s story when Jo and Meg went to the opera without her. But that was child’s antics. I think that people don’t like her mainly because Laurie ends up with her, when people think that he should have been with Jo. I on the other hand love all of the sisters, but in their own way. Meg for her motherly ways, Jo for her boldness, Beth for her gentleness and Amy for her ambition. The sad part too is that Amy really did get swept aside in past productions of the movie, because the sole focus was on Jo. This version of Little Women I feel did each of the sisters justice on telling their story, and giving each one their own screen time. And it especially did the Amy/Laurie romance justice as well as showing the two different kinds of love Laurie felt for Jo as a boy and Amy as a man.

People need to understand that Alcott wrote Amy as a sister and a human being. There is no villain in Little Women, it isn't Harry Potter. And the way people hate on Amy is the same as Ginny and Mrs. Weasley hating on Fleur Delacour; it was really disgusting, the only time I didn't like them in the books... the internalized misogyny in those pages 🤮
@mickelleshea4 жыл бұрын
Agreed. She makes statements about knowing she will marry rich and is preoccupied with wealth more than any other character, leaving the reader to either infer she finds money to be extremely important - which makes some sense as her family lives in adverse conditions, but come on, they still have a housekeeper; they’re not having food security issues. But valuing money as she may definitely goes against the family values. I get that she “had to be practical; no one else in the family was or would be;” but that’s part of the May family charm. They live for love, and it fills and completes them. Amy ends the book with a very good love, but it does appear she always intended to choose her love shrewdly, and in some ways got lucky to end up loving someone rich who loved her back.
@amasion28824 жыл бұрын
I think some readers have the idea that if they like Jo they must dislike Amy. Or vice versa. I never disliked one over the other and admired them as very complex, dimensional characters. As an adult reader I’m really more disturbed by a lot of Jo’s negative behavior towards Amy. Neither is a perfect angel, but Jo is truly a bully and even abusive.
@Lessareve4 жыл бұрын
That version made me realised how much Amy is an interesting character, which I had seen before only as "annoying lil sis". She had to grow up with those 3 AMAZING older sisters, Joe taking a lot of the spotlight, with an absent dad and a mother caring for everyone around, and finding her place in the family must have been terribly difficult. She is trying so hard to be as good as her sisters, and always fall short because she is young, and then she realises her path HAS TO BE different and understands the importance of thinking long term. Florence Pugh gave such an amazing performance

Honestly, Amy's story caught me, and her story of love and strength of character was fascinating to me. I fell in love with Amy and Laurie. I did not identify with Jo because at certain times I noticed her rude to Amy and not very fair to a little girl. Besides chemistry, Laurie and Amy clicked on me. Jo looked older than all the sisters in that family and seemed, truly, Laurie's older sister. Amy did not steal the trip to France from Jo, the aunt said, just before, that Amy was the only one worthwhile in that family, it is logical to think that the aunt offered that trip to Amy.
@karinakapoor45012 жыл бұрын
i agree. i hated it when jo said that amy had a thing for getting out of the hard moments in life but it wasn't true. Amy suddenly had so much pressure on her shoulders because Meg married out of love which is great but was poor and jo followed her dreams which did not help the family either unless she would have become someone big which was unlikely att firstt. So Aunt march choosingh amy was valid and made amy someone who was planning to support her family behind the scenes.

Even right in the beginning of the book, Jo makes fun of Amy for saying the girls at school label their dad as poor and make fun. Even though the word she suggests “libel” doesn’t make sense because it’s true; they are poor.

I always thought so too. The parallel is pretty obvious. Both were tween girls who were childish and made stupid decisions and later learned from their mistakes and grew out of it, but people still use their early mistakes as justification for hating them regardless. I honestly think the real reason people hate them so much is because they're feminine and not tomboyish "not like other girls"-types like Jo or Arya.

I have shipped jo and Laurie but after Jo rejected him, we saw it was impossible for her. Sad but okay. I never really shipped amy and Laurie but i think it’s more because I (personally) think that their romance wasn’t depicted quite intense/long enough (Sorry I just watched the Movie yesterday). I also couldn’t really shake off the feeling that if Laurie had read the letter he probably would have chosen to go for jo. That’s why I didn’t really like this whole sequence of jo doubting her feelings. I don’t want her being sad for being rejected by him. I don’t want people to hate amy (that’s utter bullshit) because she took Laurie. it was jo’s decision to reject Laurie like that, so if anyone has fault in why jo and Laurie didn’t end up together, it’s jo. I think it’s totally fine that they didn’t end up together but I don’t like this feeling that she wrote this letter, and is heartbroken. And that there is this weird tension going on. Also at the end when she talks with the editor I don’t like her saying: well jo didn’t end up together with Laurie because her sister was married to him. Instead she should have said what was the truth: she didn’t love him and she didn’t want to get married to him. Because if she says it like that you get the feeling that she could have went for Laurie if he wasn’t married and i think that completely crosses with her feelings. But seeing amy as a villain is completely against what this story wants to tell. I do think that she was a brat as a child but she didn’t purposely snatch away the position for the trip and she also couldn’t help but fall for Laurie. The thing with Jo’s writing and burning it, was the worst though. Totally not justified. But she grew up to be a mature and talented young woman who’s also very intelligent like her sister jo just in another way of showing it. But we also shouldn’t forget jo being quite mean to amy as well as a younger teen. So I guess they both weren’t always on a wavelength probably because they are so similar yet different and they don’t want to loose against each other

I personally disliked Jo, she was too self-center. I think Is unfair to point out Amy being bratty when Jo was actually bratty swell. Also I hated how Jo was bitchy at times and had this attitude of "I am better than you" towards Amy, Amy was just a kid no one ever tried to understand her. I felt that when she told Laurie how hard it was for her to accept his proposition despite loving it because she didn't want to feel like the second choice or less that Jo as she always felt. I actually think the whole letter situation was selfish bullshit and I am glad she never sent it, because she never loved or actually wanted to marry him. It has to be put into consideration how incredibly selfish Jo was with Laurie, she rejected him and 7 years later she think he is still patiently waiting for her to change her mind. Do people even realise that if Amy didn't marry Laurie, Jo would have probably marry him just because she was lonely. She didn't love him she said it to her mom. That's pretty selfish and Laurie didn't deserve that. Laurie deserved to be loved back and to be married to a woman who actually wants and to marry him. I'm so happy that he met again with Amy and felt in love with the grown version of her before he got into an unhappy marriage with Jo (a woman who DIDN'T WANT TO GET MARRIED AND DIDN'T WANT A WEALTHY POLISH LIFE). And even though they had a short time on screen together it was really shown how romantic the relationship between Amy and Laurie was. The fact that she had a crush on him and drew him when she was younger, they met up and the chemistry its strong right away with the looks and the flirting. Then Amy trying to help him grow up and become a man and stop being a pity loser. She is the wife that Laurie deserves, and I'm glad he felt in love with her. You can tell he felt completely in love with her really quick by looking and how he smiles when Jo asks her if she loves Amy. So romantic and it's honestly so meant to be. Laurie and Jo's chemistry was never actually romantic it was more of a platonic friendship, Jo never did anything romantic for Laurie or was as caring as Amy was for him.

I’ve never hated Amy, she was younger and she was the classic little sister, I had one just like that. I think people are just pissed she marries Laurie and then find reasons to hate her so their obsession is not noticeable. Being a Beth growing up, who then turned into Jo at some point in High School or College, who then realized was a gay Jo at that, I never saw the appeal of Laurie.

to be honest, I didn't have much interest in the movie at first but then I watched the scene about marriage being an economic proposition and that's what changed my mind and I began to be extremely curious about this character who saw things differently and instead of fighting them tried to use them in her favor and I have to say all this is thanks to the actress Florence who really showed this character in a different light and though I never really saw the other adaptations except for the 2017 one I have to say none can compare to this each of the women were allowed to shine all in their own light. The only bummer is that the male characters really weren't very interesting and didn't seem to bring their A-game for me but overall it was an amazing movie

The iconic, classic 1994 version doesn't play Amy as a villain at all

Really loved the bit she said about Aunt March
@leroy78782 жыл бұрын
She does mention it but I think it’s overlooked that Amy was taught/groomed by her Aunt that her whole person was to marry rich and be the income for her family. Amy was really just lucky enough to marry someone she truly loved.

As a child I disliked Amy but I loved Florence Pugh. As an adult though, Amy made perfect sense.

I think my main problem with Amy and Laurie in the book is that it was shoehorned in because they made LMA end it with marriages. It was just sort of jarring. You don't like Amy as the little sister because she's a bratty, entitled child (as many children are) and so then to have her be with Laurie feels underserved and like betrayal to the reader. That's why I think 2019 LW does so well with it. They give Amy and Jo more of a relationship and Amy more of a personality. They let us know right away that Laurie and Jo are not together, and we're clued into Amy/Laurie before we ever see Laurie/Jo. They managed those expectations and made Amy herself more likable

I’m glad she refused! Amy like many young girls feel some kind of way when they are young. This life in general is not easy for girls and young women. They are constantly trying to figure out who they are, and to prove themselves. Nothing villainous about that! By 40 I think most women come into their own. But that takes time.

Sorry, I will never stop hating Amy after she burned Jo's writing. It's not even remotely rational because she was a child, but that's the kind of thing you never forget. Love Florence, though.
