When I was 13 I heard Dog Days for the first time and it painted my adolescence now 22 this song has me weeping! she’s able to make me feel so much in such a small space of time because her voice takes you away. If only Florence could know how many people had she saved through her songs. Lungs, Between Two Lungs, Ceremonials-these helped me during the years when I got sick and was in and out of the hospital. HBHBHB was when I was going through a big change in my life. Then High as Hope was during the time I had just been released from the hospital because of my bipolar disorder. Florence (and the Machine) always helped me go through this with her music. They were my emotional crutch.

It's born from the "maybe I've always been more comfortable in chaos" line in St. Jude. The knot it ties on Heavy In Your Arms with "Grab me by my ankles - I've been flying for too long" proves transcendence in her creativity. The orchid as flower could symbolize the maturity and calm she acquired after the storm in the HBHBHB era. The tune is at this point where melancholy and bliss meet. It doesn't feel like she surrenders in it, it's just "aiming your arrow at the sky" targeting a high ideal (perhaps Hope). It's also existential in a sense with "I thought I was flying, but maybe I'm dying tonight" - urging to live before the fragile and short life is over. I remember an interview where Flo said she wanted "With no Fear and No Regrets" inscribed on her tomb stone. I kissed a beautiful guy for the first time listening to this in the background on the radio. There was this sound of rushing cars on the highway in the background just like in HBHBHB in The Odyssey. It felt that life was moving on with this kiss. We will never see each other again, but it's a memory I have stored that will be forever reminiscent with this song.

I think it’s weird how people try to imprint their emotions on artists. I wonder if this started with Van Gogh and the distraught bohemian artists myth/motif. The vast majority of great artists we have had were not tortured souls they were just people with talent who had something to say or express. Now with the wealth and drugs they all kill their inspiration and sing about their grief.

Maybe artists nowadays are just more honest about their difficulties than their predecessors were because a shift in culture and how art is received by the masses has allowed them to be. It is human nature to look for ourselves in others; to try to reach out and relate. I don’t know that the “tortured artist” thing is Florence’s appeal specifically... To me, her honesty is what is the most appealing. She is just navigating through life like the rest of us... She simply seems to be an extremely introspective person, with an ability and audience to share those highs and lows. But hey, to each their own interpretation :)

I remember listening to this song in November 2019 when my mother had just gotten really unwell. Listening to this song in a drab, freezing bench waiting for the bus to come and resisting thoughts of wanting to throw myself into oncoming traffic. I listen to this song now, thinking of her being in too much pain to stay with me, when I'm about to turn 20 and having to make the rest of my life's journey without her. I think the "song" of "sky full of song" is How Big How Blue How Beautiful. She once said the sound of the finale part of that song is what love sounds like to her. So she is in love and she is in the sky (a big blu beautiful sky) but love is also pain for her (thunder). "I couldn't hide from the thunder in a sky full of song" I think this refers to her success and fame, she was able to achieve her dream but being in the sky (her fame) it left her vulnerable. And the thunder inevitably came to shake things up in her world of song. But a songbird is what she is, and only other, more stable people can bring her back down to earth. My interpretation is that the 'Thunder' is her depression. And even her love of music and her wonderful career and what many would perceive to be a wonderful life couldn't keep it at bay. The line, "Be careful, oh, my darling, oh, be careful what it takes From what I've seen so far, the good ones always seem to break." I think relates to what depression takes from you. It can destroy every facet of your life, and the lives of those closest to you. For those who are vunerable to the emotional confusion that depression brings, it is often the hurt they cause (or think they are causing) that leads them to suicide. Lil Ali Heavy In Your Arms was the first FATM song I've heard. I was late for the school because I was completely mesmerized and stood there watching instead of going for a bus. Brian H. but the song could easily mean that she found peace: the song starts with Flo talking to herself: “are you sleeping well? i heard that you were staying out all night” (hence, the self-destruct from HBHBHB), and then she says “I couldn’t hide from the thunder in a sky full of song”, which could mean that all the parties and staying out and drunkness couldn’t drown the aweful feelings she experienced. and finally she found peace saying “hold me down, i’m so tired now”, aka “i’ll stop the self-destruction and i’m gonna keep hoping until i find peace”. that’s just my interpretation! we’ll have to wait for the record to drop! hehe.

I can imagine that she was flying in a world of illusion. The sky, her drinking and self-sabotage, suddenly revealed its true nature - a place of creativity and songs.
