Florence + The Machine - What The Water Gave Me (Lyrics)
Time it took us
To where the water was
That’s what the water gave me
And time goes quicker
Between the two of us
But oh, my love, don't forsake me
Take what the water gave me
Lay me down
Let the only sound
Be the overflow
Pockets full of stones
Lay me down
Let the only sound
Be the overflow
And oh, poor Atlas
The world's a beast of a burden
You’ve been holding on a long time
And all this longing
And the ships are left to rust
That's what the water gave us
[Chorus]
So lay me down
Let the only sound
Be the overflow
Pockets full of stones
Lay me down
Let the only sound
Be the overflow
'Cause they took your loved ones
But returned them in exchange for you
But would you have it any other way?
Would you have it any other way?
You couldn't have it any other way
'Cause she's a cruel mistress
And a bargain must be made
But oh, my love, don't forget me
When I let the water take me
So lay me down
Let the only sound
Be the overflow
Pockets full of stones
Lay me down
Let the only sound
Be the overflow
So lay me down
Let the only sound
Be the overflow
Pockets full of stones
Lay me down
Let the only sound
Be the overflow

She once said that as a child, she dove to the bottom of a swimming pool and, for a moment, felt like she could breathe, and she's been trying to recreate the feeling ever since.

Florence's music transcends and breaks all laws of time and relativity lol idc idc! EDIT: This absolute banger still has its grip on me in 2022. STILL banging this in 2023 - Florence is FOREVER

this helped me when i was hospitalized for suicidal ideation. It wasn't exactly healthy to listen to a song about suicide when i was having those thoughts, but it still helped me transform that sadness into something more positive. It was also nice to know that I wasn't alone in this taboo romanticizing. Even now, years later, when I think of how terrified I am of death, this song helps me think through it and cope. The only way to be at peace with death is to live your life without fear. and make full use of it. Earn your eternal rest, because death halts for no one. I've loved Florence and The Machine since I was a child, and I'm still obsessed with them. They've really impacted me and my life. I wish anyone reading this a long, happy life. Know you are loved.

You were hospitalized for this?! This is some system that works well. Where I am from I'm literally begging for help and people are saying to me that everyone wants to kill themselves and that's the most normal thing so I should work more till I have no time to think about shit. I've been here before, and I've commented before. What is it that brings me back? It's the song, of course, and the tune. And the sky, and the reaching for the sky. And her lips, and the asymmetry of her face - Flo is not pretty, but she is beautiful. So much joy, in a song that is about sadness. Words fail me.

Jed Dye Ah, you're so kind to say that. I'm complex, but I'm not interesting. Incidentally, moving on ..... I admire Flo, but I am not happy with the recent two singles from the forthcoming album. So ... gays in the military, your thoughts?
@gordonmorgan6298
@gordonmorgan6298 9 жыл бұрын
I'm against anyone in the military lolz, wars are only fought for profit. If a gay man wishes to join the military I see no problem as long as he can carry his own weight. I'm not sexist but I have heard from guys in the military that most women who join only pass the training because the guys around them are all helping, that to me seems like a major disadvantage if you can't carry your own gear in combat. That's what I meant by carrying your own weight.
@flo15jo
@flo15jo 9 жыл бұрын
Jed Dye I'm sorry, Jed, I'm British, and my sense of humour got the better of me. My comment really meant - what do you think of those tracks?! But yes, I am also against war, although possibly not against the just war, and I am opposed to nuclear weapons and mutually assured destruction, but I am for females performing any roles that they want to carry out (my wife made me say that) and I think combat packs should be lighter. Isn't it great that a pop tune by a UK songstress can get us discussing these issues? I love KZbin!

By the way I'm also British but really I'm Scottish lol. Nice talking with you sir, I did wonder why you started asking obscure questions , thought it was some kind of test and I was hoping for a prize hehe. Have a great day sir, it's been a pleasure.

I did some research and discovered that this song is about Virginia Woolf's suicide. Then I came here and saw the vídeo... honestly, I fell in love with her idea. This is one of the happiest music vídeos of her, and in my opinion she made it that way to show that life is good after all. And it has good times, besides all, so we shouldn't think that killing ourselves is na option. Also, this was one of her rare vídeos in which she appears off character (being Florence Welch and not the artistic Florence). Maybe this was because the song wasn't really about her, so she didn't appear much.

Brandon H haha true. in fact, virginia woolf killed herself by filling her pockets with stones and throwing herself in a lake. there’s clear references to that like the verse you just said, and there are also subtle references to the other events surrounding her death (sometimes i think the lyrics are part of the letter virginia wrote for her husband before doing it)

On the other hand, sometimes this world just isn't right for some people. Born in the wrong time. It happens with artists and visionaries. Their agents and publicists and publishers and advertisers and everyone else who makes money off them *do not understand*. Cannot understand. Because this world, being the product of many, is a world they made, and they like it just the way it is. They don't care if a handful of us don't belong here. Not at all. Except for whatever money we can generate for them. And if we can't do that--maybe our art isn't what they want right now--then we're useless. We don't kill ourselves for that. We kill ourselves because the libido of the ugly can be too much to bear for any decent human being who hasn't replaced their blood with the sludge of liquefied bank notes. I've endured a while now. We'll see how much more. Though, unlike Woolf, few will mind my passing. lol.

I'd say that dyeing your hair with henna would be the best solution as it gives you this stunning, red colour and doesn't wash away. It also makes your hair look thick and glossy. But since it is so durable, once you go for henna you can't really go back.

+alexf02071999 Music is very subjective, a music promoter guru guy once told me that the secret that most people don't realize is that a persons music and vocals, the song is "a feeling" projected from that person, and when you listen you receive it, and feel the same feeling, and if its real good for you at that time you love it. This explains why sometimes we might think "born to be wild" is the best song ever, if you hanging out a sunroof going down the freeway smashed on beer and weed, or you may think Diana Krall's "temptation" is the best when your going down on someone. The appeal of a song not only changes from person to person but from mood to mood, or often times liked because it takes you from feeling like crap to the same awesome feeling the person had when they were singing it, you feel what they felt, and become them in a way. So to say any song is good or bad may be useful only in the most simplistic sense, in other words, I don't like how it makes me feel. Like "Fishheads, fishheads, roly poly fish heads, eat them up, yum!" the hit from the 1980's, does not do a hell of a lot for me in any mood, unless maybe if I dropped acid, lol......Today I think "What the water gave me" is the best song ever, because I want to feel what she feels, and do love the feeling, it is awesome, but tomorrow I may need a different feeling. Comparing songs at the level of good or bad is like comparing roads, a road is a road, it all depends on where you want to go.

“And Oh poor Atlas the worlds a beast of a burden you’ve been holding up a long time” brilliant. I’m so upset I never got to see her perform this live. I hope she brings it back for a tour. This song is just so unbelievably mesmerizing. Do prefer the demo version but this is still so good.

I always used to consider Blinding to be the band's best song. But the more I listen to What The Water Gave Me the more I think it's better than Blinding. The narrative of this song is so subtly deep and flows beautifully across the entire song, and the instrumentals are awesome. I know this is related to Virginia Woolf's suicide in part, so I think its fitting that the entire song kind of feels like a Virginia Woolf novel put to music.
