this helped me when i was hospitalized for suicidal ideation. It wasn't exactly healthy to listen to a song about suicide when i was having those thoughts, but it still helped me transform that sadness into something more positive. It was also nice to know that I wasn't alone in this taboo romanticizing. Even now, years later, when I think of how terrified I am of death, this song helps me think through it and cope. The only way to be at peace with death is to live your life without fear. and make full use of it. Earn your eternal rest, because death halts for no one. I've loved Florence and The Machine since I was a child, and I'm still obsessed with them. They've really impacted me and my life. I wish anyone reading this a long, happy life. Know you are loved.

The Lyrics: Time it took us To where the water was That’s what the water gave me And time goes quicker Between the two of us Oh, my love, don’t forsake me Take what the water gave me Lay me down Let the only sound Be the overflow Pockets full of stones Lay me down Let the only sound Be the overflow And oh, poor Atlas The world’s a beast of a burden You’ve been holding up a long time And all this longing And the ships are left to rust That’s what the water gave us So lay me down Let the only sound Be the overflow Pockets full of stones Lay me down Let the only sound Be the overflow ‘Cause they took your loved ones But returned them in exchange for you But would you have it any other way? Would you have it any other way? You couldn't have it any other way ‘Cause she’s a cruel mistress And a bargain must be made But oh, my love, don’t forget me When I let the water take me So lay me down Let the only sound Be the over flow Pockets full of stones Lay me down Let the only sound Be the overflow So lay me down Let the only sound Be the overflow Pockets full of stones Lay me down Let the only sound Be the overflow

I've been here before, and I've commented before. What is it that brings me back? It's the song, of course, and the tune. And the sky, and the reaching for the sky. @gordonmorgan62989 жыл бұрын
I'm against anyone in the military lolz, wars are only fought for profit. If a gay man wishes to join the military I see no problem as long as he can carry his own weight. I'm not sexist but I have heard from guys in the military that most women who join only pass the training because the guys around them are all helping, that to me seems like a major disadvantage if you can't carry your own gear in combat. That's what I meant by carrying your own weight.
@flo15jo9 жыл бұрын
Jed Dye I'm sorry, Jed, I'm British, and my sense of humour got the better of me. My comment really meant - what do you think of those tracks?! But yes, I am also against war, although possibly not against the just war, and I am opposed to nuclear weapons and mutually assured destruction, but I am for females performing any roles that they want to carry out (my wife made me say that) and I think combat packs should be lighter. Isn't it great that a pop tune by a UK songstress can get us discussing these issues? I love KZbin!

I did some research and discovered that this song is about Virginia Woolf's suicide. Then I came here and saw the vídeo... honestly, I fell in love with her idea. This is one of the happiest music vídeos of her, and in my opinion she made it that way to show that life is good after all. And it has good times, besides all, so we shouldn't think that killing ourselves is na option. Also, this was one of her rare vídeos in which she appears off character (being Florence Welch and not the artistic Florence). Maybe this was because the song wasn't really about her, so she didn't appear much.

Brandon H haha true. in fact, virginia woolf killed herself by filling her pockets with stones and throwing herself in a lake. there’s clear references to that like the verse you just said, and there are also subtle references to the other events surrounding her death (sometimes i think the lyrics are part of the letter virginia wrote for her husband before doing it)

On the other hand, sometimes this world just isn't right for some people. Born in the wrong time. It happens with artists and visionaries. Their agents and publicists and publishers and advertisers and everyone else who makes money off them *do not understand*. Cannot understand. Because this world, being the product of many, is a world they made, and they like it just the way it is. They don't care if a handful of us don't belong here. Not at all. Except for whatever money we can generate for them. And if we can't do that--maybe our art isn't what they want right now--then we're useless. We don't kill ourselves for that. We kill ourselves because the libido of the ugly can be too much to bear for any decent human being who hasn't replaced their blood with the sludge of liquefied bank notes. I've endured a while now. We'll see how much more. Though, unlike Woolf, few will mind my passing. lol.

This little gal has the biggest set of vocals I have heard since Lydia pence back in the late 60's! Always get goosebumps no matter how many times I listen! People of my generation who say there's no good music anymore... aren't paying attention!

And oh, poor Atlas The world’s a beast of a burden You’ve been holding up a long time And all this longing And the ships are left to rust That’s what the water gave us Florence, Virginia would be so happy to know that such a beautiful was inspired by her work and her life.

I think she is perhaps the most beautiful woman in the cosmos because of not only who she is and what her music means to me, but to a heart that has endured terribly, she has been a source of love when there has been none. It's hard to believe that its been so many years since this was released and still, every time I hear it, every time I watch her sing this with that angelic voice, she takes me away, plain and so utterly truthful to a place I hardly remember.....hope.

+alexf02071999 I love this track but no way would I say it's the best she's done. That is the beauty of great music. Everyone has different feelings about different songs. at least we all agree that Flo+ the Machine is something really special
@alexf020719999 жыл бұрын
+youandwhosearmy? Well actually I think Queen of Peace is the best track off the new album and one of the best songs she's ever done, along with this one and Blinding. I had no idea there were people who didn't like QoP, it blew me away the first time I heard it, too. Like I said, I love her new stuff, but this song is just perfection for me.

+alexf02071999 If pushed on an early favourite it'd be "Howl" for me but in all honesty I couldn't pick out favourites because they are just so many classy, quality tracks on all thew records.
@TheWhitehorseman19 жыл бұрын
+alexf02071999 Music is very subjective, a music promoter guru guy once told me that the secret that most people don't realize is that a persons music and vocals, the song is "a feeling" projected from that person, and when you listen you receive it, and feel the same feeling, and if its real good for you at that time you love it. This explains why sometimes we might think "born to be wild" is the best song ever, if you hanging out a sunroof going down the freeway smashed on beer and weed, or you may think Diana Krall's "temptation" is the best when your going down on someone. The appeal of a song not only changes from person to person but from mood to mood, or often times liked because it takes you from feeling like crap to the same awesome feeling the person had when they were singing it, you feel what they felt, and become them in a way. So to say any song is good or bad may be useful only in the most simplistic sense, in other words, I don't like how it makes me feel. Like "Fishheads, fishheads, roly poly fish heads, eat them up, yum!" the hit from the 1980's, does not do a hell of a lot for me in any mood, unless maybe if I dropped acid, lol......Today I think "What the water gave me" is the best song ever, because I want to feel what she feels, and do love the feeling, it is awesome, but tomorrow I may need a different feeling. Comparing songs at the level of good or bad is like comparing roads, a road is a road, it all depends on where you want to go.
