Lot's of people have information on how to paint, but almost no one addresses why to paint, how it is a spiritual exercise and not merely a technical demonstration of skills one has mastered. Confronting oneself and the world one faces and expressing that is the essence of art as you have so ably noted. As respects light, "the sun is God," JMW Turner. Every time I listen to anyone speak of hue and chroma I get overwhelmed. You teach it the best of anyone I have listened to. And yet, I still get confused. In listening to this video, it honestly dawned on me that I am not and will never be a technical painter. I will never see improvement in the way you spoke. And in that moment I felt defeated. That I will never reach a point in my work that I feel profient as well as happy. I kept listening to the video and as you reached the 11 minute mark, you began to speak of the intangible reasons some people paint and those who prepare vs those who dive in. I dive in and see what happens everytime. I am the happiest, the free-est when I simply let it flow. Maybe they aren't the best paintings but they are all reworkable if needed- or not. The best thing is that as you spoke through this last part, THIS last part... you gave me my joy back. THANK YOU. Sometimes we just need someone to say it's OK to be who we are meant to be. I know what you mean : I'm the opposite, I'm very analytical and technical. But for a long time, for me, being a "technical" painter was an excuse not to own my true, meaningful art. Now, I manage to combine my overly analytical side with my spontaneous inspiration but it wasn't always easy. You have to go with what feels right, you don't need to be technical, you just need to be yourself. 🙏

What do I feel about it? How do I interpret that and use my painting to best convey what I want to say to the viewers? The ideas give a starting point and framework to fill with my painting. Great inspiration and great time to rethink what I’m doing. I just finished a portrait out of fun and I realized that the color of the face is way too light. Why? I painted at night. Wow, the last advice hit me hard. I had been drawing all my life before 26 as a hobby, but 4 years ago I started deliberately practising drawing for 2 years, then with digital painting. I'm not making the progresss I'D like to do because I really struggle with realism - or maybe even hyperrealism is what my brain wants me to achieve. I often hate myself for being so incabable of reaching a level of realism... It is nice to hear your advice on "don't make perfect paintings, make something that has your traces in it".

Thanks for your comment, yeah, don't be too hard on yourself, but know that you are probably someone who loves to paint clean, sharp and intricate details. It doesn't have to be hyper-realistic, but it has to be "hyper-you", that's for sure 😊🎨👍

For perfect studio light: Feit Electric corn bulb. I have a small studio so I only need one 500W-equivalent bulb but a large studio might need 2 1,000W equivalent bulbs. Perfect bright even daylight, no shadows or reflections

Always inspiring Florent. Thank you so much. I just had a portfolio appraisal which was really useful in many ways but he and you concur with the philosophy of doing what you love to do. I persist with oils through a sense of obligation...it is the highest expression of skill supposedly. However what I love to do is draw and cartoon! So while I can still paint and will, I will do it when I feel I want to not because I HAVE to get better in some personal struggle or competition. Am I missing something?

Damn your videos are good. I'm a stubborn idiot who refuses to do most of the stuff recommended for artists. For example I pretty much only paint from my head while still wanting to achieve good light and many of the other stuff that would come far easier with generous use of references. Most painting videos have advice that is hard to use for my "I'll do whatever I want" -painting habit but yours are really thought provoking. A lot of stuff I "know", but when said explicitly it seems more obvious and clear. I really need to remember to use more desaturated colors as I like them and it would really help in not making my trees look like they are made out of ketchup and mustard...

A photographer can’t always pick and choose what is in the picture or add and subtract a person or thing and that’s why they came out with photoshop and all the digital things to be able to manipulate a photo much like an artist would in a painting.

I liked that : "Photorealism a display of vanity" There was this video on tiktok : 1. "What people think I do when I say I draw" (goes on to show some lovely drawings made by other artists) 2 What I actually draw (triumphant cinematic music followed by a display of hyperrealistic drawings done by the tiktoker) The video didn't get a good response because the artist was trying to shame other artists for not painting as hyperrealistically (aka as good) as her.

Great stuff! I’ll rewatch and take notes. I have been doing more of these tips lately and need to ensure I really learn this. I feel like tonal art is valid without colour however. Also let’s not shame hyper realistic artists. Also digital paintings are paintings…. You can get brushwork in digital art btw. Physical full colour traditional art is not ‘more real’ or ‘better’, which I feel was a bit implied here. That’s hella insulting to people who truly love hyper realistic art or greyscale or digital with photo bashing or smooth styles with no brushwork or very digital styles. So maybe don’t put down some types of art to elevate your own art style preferences. It’s all art and equally valid. I can’t really get behind your final thoughts even if my personal art preferences are in alignment. People are different and prefer different art styles. Semi realistic to realistic traditional full colour art with heavy brushwork is only one subcategory of art and not the be all end all ideal ‘perfect art’. It’s overall my favourite but let’s not invalidate other styles and mediums. Unless I’m mistaken you very much implied this? Still great tips for me personally.

As Larry Marshall below, has so eloquently stated, "this is one of those videos", and I'm SO glad I stumbled upon it... It has made me think very strongly about not trying to be a "photographic" painter, and aim for perfect duplication of realism, but rather, allow my personality to come through and adorn my works from now on... otherwise, what's the point????? Look at Van Gogh, my God, what style, what a departure from realism, and regarded as one of the world's greatest masters, because of his interpretation of his subject, using his imagination and style...thank you Florent for making me think again about this!!

Florent, you amaze me, your kindness and sensitivity is something that is rarely found in our world today. I love all of your videos.They are filled with so much depth and understanding. I am working on a painting that I started a few months ago. I started this painting with joy in my mind and heart. It is a painting that depicts great love, between a brother and his two sisters. I'm sure you know the story from the New Testament of Lazarus and his sisters, Mary and Martha, and the joy they experienced when Christ brought him back from death. My oldest son died unexpectedly right after I started the painting on Feb. 5th 2022, he took his own life. I have painted my whole life off and on, and only done one other portrait. After my son passed away, my husband and I got Covid. We are recovering, but now I am stuck not feeling I can complete this painting. But I do thank you for your work and your teaching abilities, you have helped me a lot. I guess I should be patient with myself and do what I can. Thank you Florent for being who you are. Karolyn

Excellent advice especially the last section about style. i 1st understood this when an artist compared it to our individual signature. no-one can copy or create it quite the same way as your hand can. so this actually m3ans we all have our own style as soon as we learn to hold a pencil or a paintbrush...everthing else is built from knowledge and choices that come from our sole .hopefully that makes sence 🙈🤪
