Just came back here to say that in college I got covid during my first ceramics/pottery class. So it was extremely difficult for me to catch up after getting better. After that I had a lot of anxiety during class because I was so behind. So every Friday I’d come in to the ceramics building and put in extra hours after watching your videos I was finally able to pass after so much frustration and anxiety. Thank you so much for your videos!!!

Your videos are so incredible. I've watched through your beginners series twice now. I recently took a few private pottery classes at a local studio but at the final stage (glazing), they somehow lost my pieces. I was devastated! Watching your videos has made me feel excited to try again. I love how thorough you are and how much time you put into making these educational videos. Thank you!!!

This is so beautifully specific. The detailed tips like using the glaze lid to prevent spillage and using your fingertips to desharpen the edges after shaping make me emotional with their elegance. Not a potter at all but I'm planning to make a mug for my partner's birthday at a local pottery class and this will help immensely with making it a gift that's at least likeable if not actually practical.

Florian, I am obsessed with your videos. So relaxing. So informative. Is there a reason that you pull your handles instead of using an extruder? I have been using a mold for my handles, and it is clearly holding back the quality of my mugs. In the midst of deciding between using an extruder or pulling.
@floriangadsby3 жыл бұрын
Thank you for watching John! Well, it's more just personal preference more than anything. The same job could of course be done with an extruder but that is essentially what my hand is doing, which I suppose is advantageous as there's no extruder to clean afterwards and it's completely customisable just by changing the shape of your hand, as opposed to having to change the die plates in the extruder each time you want a different shaped handle. If that makes sense. Of course pulling takes longer to learn but once the skills are there it's very versatile, very fast and requires no clean up.
@ragnkja2 жыл бұрын
I’ve heard that pulled handles are stronger, as the clay particles are more aligned.
@VertexCarver3 жыл бұрын
This is wonderful. Been following along a short while and I do feel that they're all very eye opening and inspiring. Makes me wonder if one can go into this as a hobbyist. I'm assuming there are tradeoffs that one can make in what glaces & clay to start off a non-profit pottery journey. It might be an unreasonable question but what clays would you recommend for beginners. Can one make a small kiln to start somewhere or does it take a serious investment? (I might be looking at it from the wrong perspective & that one doesn't need to own their own space but maybe there are places to rent/share a studio as you're learning?) Anyways, I look forward to what project you'll share with us next! ^^

Hello from Oregon! with our current conditions (40ish centigrade from noon until early evening, 30% humidity) mugs that size would be bone dry in 1-2 hours. I was amazed you had a batch that size and were able to attach all the handles without a bunch of plastic bags, even with your incredible speed. What is your humidity/temperature in the studio where/when you shot this? also, your name keeps coming up on r/pottery reddit as the man with the youtube videos for "remote learners" to level up. I've personally hugely benefited from your content. Thank you!
