Why do you want to make the finisher queen-right? I understand why you make the starter queenless, but why is it better to make the finisher queen-right? Thanks and I really like all of your videos!

You can let a queen-less starter finish cells, it will work fine, but it will only do a real good job for one round unless you continuously add fresh young bees. By the second round the proper age nurse bees are aging. Using this method you can do it again and and again because there is a steady supply of bees that are of the proper age. This is important. @@bobbinnie9872 I have a question along the same line. Are they adding frames of brood or shaking any bees into these cell building colonies that come from donor colonies? If not they must just keep these colonies good and strong. I do understand what's happening, virtually all the bees in the colony end up in the lower box both through shaking them in from the top box and the field force flying back from the top box. I am curious because if they are not colllecting brood and bees from other colonies it seems very efficient and I like that idea.

Thats interesting. Last September my 8 hives were robbing each other so i figured i would simulate rain, turned the hose on shower setting and sprayed straight up above the hives as if it was raining. Took about 2 or 3 minutes and they stopped robbing. I did it the next day as well. It definitely works if you have running water. Always good info Bob.

Good video Bob, thanks for sharing. I started watching it when you first posted, but only just got around to finishing it now. I've never tried the double screen method but am always keen to try different variations of the same theme. Down here in Australia we've finished queens for the season, but I'll make up some double screen boards like that and give it a crack next season. They look like a great company with a good crew

I am hoping to be able to make some queens this year to make up about 10 nucs or 8 frames to take into winter and also hoping to catch some swarms this year want to go into winter with 10-15 hives. His hive bodies are dipped in hot paraffin wax with a little copper naphthenate added. His lids are plywood cheese board. I think the lids turn dark with time in the sun. He only paints the raw edges after cutting.

Hi Craig. Swarm cells make the best cells because they are generally very well fed. They are usually made at a time when the bees are predisposed to making cells. The Indian study on feeding syrup looked at a number of different concentrations of syrup and found that the one that elicited the most brood production and wax production was 1.3 parts water to 1 part sugar. My experience is that anything remotely close works well. We routinely feed 1 to 1 when building colonies on syrup because we also want to gain weight. When feeding colonies strictly for producing nucs we use anything between 1.25 and 1.5 to 1 and have good results.

Have you tried the Betterbee comb for grafting. I’m not sure if the side walls are harder when you have newer comb in your hives. I don’t have any experience with the comb. I’m thinking I’ll try some of it this year.

@@branchbrookfarm I don't graft but I bought 20 frames of BB comb and I thought it was pretty soft material. The bees used them as soon as I put them in. Since they are drawn comb and if the bees are on a flow they will just fill them up with nectar. The queen didn't lay eggs in them because they used older drawn comb close by. If you are not in a flow and it last for awhile they will eat away at the comb and use it somewhere else. If you use them you will have to let us know how they worked.

I find you can get almost any Chinese grating tool to work if you rub in on a bit of fine sand paper to get in thinner and shape the tip with fine scissors. I tried to find out who actually invented it, he or she really should be remembered but I was not able to find their name.
