Hard to know. I was in shock. He was forced to fire his DC and O-line coach so I thought he was safe. Some say it was because he gave up and was looking to move to the NFL. He made a comment about recruiting that infuriated the fans. He also played Emory Jones over Anthony Richardson that infuriated the fans. He did not recruit well but was a great offensive coach and had a great strength and conditioning coach. He just needed to find a good DC and some coaches that could recruit.

@@jackarmstrong5645 from a competitive standpoint, I can understand the “lack of” recruiting I guess. I saw something the other day where his recruiting classes still ranked higher than Napiers. Florida needs to find a proven coach and not gamble on a prospect.

Mullen didn't worry about recruiting, and several in state recruits went to our in state rivals or Georgia. Just about every 5 star we were going for. While I think we aren't in a better or worse position, we let mullen go because he wasn't doing what we expected him to do. The issue was that we went from a coach that didn't care about recruiting and wanted to win with 3 and 4 stars to we now have a coach that can recruit high ranked players but doesn't do anything special with the talent he acquires. We're in the same sinking boat but with a new life vest.
@mynameisaegis4 ай бұрын
He just quit. Not literally of course, but he didn't want to be at UF after 2020 and it was painfully obvious. He wanted to go to the NFL in 2019 and got told no. And then the shoe throw debacle in 2020 absolutely broke him. Combine that with his absolute lack of care for recruiting, "we'll talk about that during recruiting season" is an actual quote from him. He also always thought he was the smartest one in the room and that was no more evident in 2021. He refused to fire Grantham or Hevesy despite the UF defense being historically bad (for the UF program at least) in 2020. He also refused to bench Emory Jones for Anthony Richardson despite the clear visual evidence that AR was better. And the one game he did start AR? Fucking Georgia. This extended to other positions as well where backups were clearly better than the starters but the starters got the playing time due to Seniority, but it was most evident at QB. Bet you a nickel if Franks doesn't get hurt in 2019 Trask doesn't play. Mullen was a stubborn man and that was what did him in.

As a Florida fan I can agree with a lot of your points but to call Mullen’s firing premature after previously mentioning the long list of said reasons he was fired seems a bit ridiculous. Mullen was a great coach but you also have to keep in mind most of the good players from his tenure weren’t even his recruits. Toney and Trask were from McElwain and Pitts was already committed before Mullen even got there. Ultimately his nonchalant attitude about recruiting was his undoing. You only get players for a few years in college football, that’s the name of the game. If you don’t have great players coming in to replace the old ones your program slowly dies, like we saw at the end of Mullen’s tenure and as we’re continuing to see in Napier’s.

Let me stop you at the end of the video. Mullen /needed/ to be fired. Absolutely 100000% did. If you aren't a Gator fan you just see the "oh he made 3 straight NY6 Bowls, he was good" which he was. Until he gave up. Mullen gave up on the Gators. He wanted to go to the NFL after the 2019 season, got told no, and then thought he had a good team in 2020. He also outright refused to fire the two idiots you mentioned in Hevesy and Grantham until his job was on the line in the middle of 2021. He didn't enjoy recruiting (the rankings are good, but a good 60-70% of those classes never made it to campus). The Gators just replaced him with someone who we now know was the worst possible choice to replace him with.

I also feel we have the talent on the field now!! But not the coaches. We need to put these kids in a position to be successful... Not run schemes on offense and defense that is so predictable and elementary his strategies don't work in the SEC!!! In my 44 years of experience, your defense can be a reflection of your offense. Very often, your offense struggles all game, and your defense will break and break fast soon as they run into adversity
@patrickdezenzio49884 ай бұрын
Except for the offensive line. It's bad, real bad. I could replace the line with even a decent high school line and do better. Heck, just buy Lakeland's offensive line for the season, might win more than half the games remaining.
@troylee41964 ай бұрын
Every few years this happens now Shouldn't have fired Mullens, thought they'd go from a Herman to Sarkisian but went from a Mack Brown to a Charlie Strong Florida, since Urban Meyer (or even since Spurrier left) has gone from bad to looking decent to overally hyped to bad to looking decent to overally hyped They haven't had a consistent QB, consistent RB or consistent offensive scheme or consistent defensive scheme since 2009 Just expect this from Florida... they'll hire a new coach, he'll be okay his first year, overhyped his second (beat/come close to beating UGA or Bama or LSU), then lose to some FCS and the cycle will continue It's like the USC and having freshman QB phenoms transferring after getting injured their sophomore year only to have the next freshman phenom take over and the same thing happen (Caleb Williams may have changed that trajectory) So either UF needs to ride things out, pay players more to come to their school or just desire for 1 out of 4 years to have a shot at getting blown out in the SEC Championship game
@patrickdezenzio49884 ай бұрын
Mullen was a disaster. I'm not sure we would have won more games with him the last 2 years because our recruiting rankings were slipping into the 30s and ultimately maybe into the 50s. Mullen hated to recruit, expected to get whoever sent their LOI in. Maybe got a few from the portal, but like FSU, you just don't know if the guys you get will mesh with the rest of the team. Keep in mind Mullen was such an awful QB Whisperer, that he went with Franks, not once but twice over Trask until Franks broke his leg for the last time and then Trask pulled a Burrows. If not for Mullen's insistence to keep the worst DC in college football history, the guy affectionately called 3rd and Grantham, because his teams routinely couldn't get off the field, we might have won the CFP in 2020. Too many melt downs with him, from showing up at a press conference dressed as Darth Vader, to instigating a brawl at halftime of the Missouri game, to numerous gaffes, then finally to a losing season. Put it this way, he was such a sucky coach, he was set to start Emory Jones over Anthony Richardson. AR would have transferred out never having thrown a pass as a Gator. What has Emory Jones done? Much much worse than DJU at FSU.

Honestly....... this is Karma for firing Dan Mullen had they kept him i feel confident enough to say they would at least be 9-3 or 8-4 consistently. They shouldn't have fired him

Canes fan here. Wish Gators good game and good luck for the rest of your season. From my view I think it will take more than just “cleaning things up” as Napier said after the game. I was on the 50 yard line, row 2, on the first snap it looked like the Canes were just more muscular and conditioned. The stats of height/weight may be the same but from what I saw the UM players were leaner and more muscle mass.
