The Citizens Property Insurance Corporation's Board of Governors voted to approve a new rate package for 2025, meaning customers could see up to a 14% increase. "You know, we don't feel like we have much of a choice at this point, so we are just dealing with it as best as we can," said Frances Druding, a resident in Pinellas County. That's how Frances and Jason Druding feel when it comes to home insurance options.

I did the same thing last year. I lived in Southeast Florida and every year I had to deal with increases, cancellation, or moving in or out of Citizens. I moved to Florida in 1983 when it really was paradise. Not so much anymore. Add in the ever increasing heat and humidity and the threat of hurricanes for 6 months each year, I finally had it. I put my house on the market, had one open house weekend and got 6 offers. I closed at the end of August and moved to Pennsylvania. I'm originally from NY and had forgotten how much I missed the change of seasons. I would visit Florida but I would never live there again

@@mlohorn The problem isn’t that you live next-door a river. The problem is that their river sometimes comes into their house. When’s the last time your river overflowed its banks? Or is it required that your house be a certain level above the river before they allow you to build there? Florida decided many years ago that they were libertarian state and you could build wherever you wanted to.

One of the problems in Florida is that the major home building companies employ a huge chunk of skilled home building tradesman labor. There is no one around to fix/repair strom damage. These subcontractors go back after the storm continuing with new builds and not repairing damage.. For the size of the state, the number of small independent home builder contractors is very small. They cannot handle the repair/rebuild work and thus the price goes through the roof after the storm.

A few weeks ago, I saw a chart on one of the commentary programs that showed an ever-rising increase in billion dollars plus damaging hurricanes/storms over the past 15 years or so. The line of events and the cost in billions of dollars rose steadily over the years. Insurance costs are going up because the risk of severe damage and costs to be covered by losses is rising. Insurance corporations are in business to make a profit, not to break even or even lose money. At some point, insurers will leave certain areas because the cost to insure would be beyond reach for 90% or more of property owners as severe weather events continue to increase and cause more and more damage. Unfortunately for homeowners in the threatened areas, this isn't going to get any better, it will only get worse.

Joe has nothing to do with Florida insurance rates. It's corporate greed. Every year the rates go up because the insurance asks and gets new rates approved. Our governor isn't helping either, just word salad.
