Hurricanes bring up the best in people. Moved here from Costa Rica 10 years ago and was so touched how people took care of one another because of hurricanes. Fell in love with Florida for this reason. The worst one I saw was Matthew 2016 (?) we had no power for a week but everyone in our building was having a great time in the garden, cooking whatever anyone had on the grill. It was GREAT fun. I can never ever live anywhere else. Every time I leave my town of Lake Worth Beach I come back and kiss the ground. Hurricanes are not to be feared but always prepared for. And if you do decide to live here, please always try to help neighbors. Knock on doors and ask if they are prepared. Many of our elder neighbors need help and very shy to ask.

Yep! Our street hunters down and when it's over we work together- especially when we have zero power and people test the " waters" to see if they can loot OR conn you in to thinking they are helping when the idea is to rip you off. We are also glad a " curfew" is in place and the only lights you see are from emergency response or national guard.

Hurricane Wilma was a strange one. Here in Clearwater, FL the hurricane went by in the morning and within a few hours a cold front came through and it was a beautiful day. I had no idea it was going to cut across the state and do all the damage it did in south Florida.

The sad truth that MSM fails to adequately cover is the fact that virtually any *properly* built (meeting or exceeding code requirements) properties usually survive with minimal or no damage.
@MP99.7 ай бұрын
So that translates to the yr 2000 or newer because that is when the code changed. And it only changed for some of SE FL at that time. Later on the state adopted Miami building codes to cover most of the state on NEW construction only. Lots of older buildings still and mobile homes unfortunately

@@MP99. Well, I've lived in south Florida all my life (I'm 70) and have experienced many hurricanes. Our house was built in 1952 and we have never had even a single broken window, nor any roof loss/damage, due to any hurricane. Even if our house exceeded the code requirements at the time it was built, it still suggests that homes can be built to withstand any hurricane. But contractors are always looking for ways to cut costs; many of the homes severely damaged during Andrew were found to have less than the required number of tie-down straps for the roof.
@MP99.7 ай бұрын
The biggest failure in Andrew was garage doors failing and the wind getting into the homes and making them explode from the inside out essentially. You likely have a carport or nothing at all if your home is from that timeframe. That is good and you have been lucky. The houses in Andrew had no requirements for "tie-down straps" because there was no code requiring them and there were no minimum nailing requirements for the sheeting but, both were added along with minimums on attachments For garage doors, windows, exterior doors. If you get a mitigation inspection there are 4 types of attachment from roof to wall on the paperwork. Toe nails, clips, single strap and double strap. Prior to the Miami Dade building code there was no requirement and most homes used either clips or toe nails depending on the type of house (wood frame or block) What is the strongest hurricane that made landfall in PBC that you have been in? I can look it up and tell you but the age of much stronger storms is here and we are on borrowed time till when we get a bad hit like Andrew or Ian or Michael here. Please don't get complacent because you made it thru weaker storms or the left side (weak side) of strong storms riding north off the coast(David, Matthew, Dorain) without damage
@MP99.7 ай бұрын
@@hottuna7 Strongest winds in PBC since 1952 in a hurricane was hurricane Wilma. There were several other with just slightly lower max winds in PBC including (David, Isbell, Cleo, Francis and Jeanne) As pointed out above Wilma was a cat 2 over our area and the max wind gust recorded at PBIA was 101mph with sustained wind at only 82mph. There were a few gusts in Wilma around SO FL that were just a tick higher but not official from what I can tell. Just Prior to your home being built there were a group of stronger ones from 1945-50 there were 2 cat 4s, 2 cat 1s and 1 cat2 striking PBC so a bad few yrs there. All data is best I could find but back then there was a lot less data.

Moving to Florida was the worst thing I ever did to myself. It is not paradise. It is a lawless hellscape. I have a waterfront property in the Big Bend. Idalia nearly killed me. The massive amount of insurance that I pay didn’t cover anything. The people here are awful. I have had over $150k worth of stuff stolen from me. (Boat AND an RV) The sheriff does not care. I’ve been beaten up. I’ve had death threats. I had squatters that caused felony property damages. Florida is not worth the trouble. Save yourself the agony.

Helicopters fly over head often looking for suspects. Sirens are almost constant. Nor only because of car crashes due to the tremendous traffic problem but also crime. And it's as if I live in a Spanish country. The majority are Hispanics and most can't speak English. Even though many of them have lived in the US for years. Don't ask for help at Walmart either. We went to the Hilton hotel off Hillsboro Blvd. we watched the French doors of the suite below us (through the entire wall of nothing bout glass windows) rip off the hinge and shatter the massive sheet of glass, blowing thousands of shards, directly into our hotel room. If my step father hadn’t been there to help me secure our door closed, I don’t think any of us would have eyes to see. Literally. May he RIP. 2.5 wks no power.. what an experience & great lessons to learn. Still a Floridian today.. Prep, prepare & evacuate when necessary!!! ❤️🙏🏼🙏🏼🙏🏼

1. Beer. 2. One thing to mention about hurricanes: The majority of deaths and damage are caused by storm surge, or the uplifting of the ocean/gulf waters that creates massive flooding. South Florida is lucky in that we have an ocean floor that drops off very rapidly close to shore. This tends to minimize storm surge, since there is plenty of depth to absorb the surge. Places like the gulf coast are just the opposite and they get clobbered! 3. Preparation (See #1 above...) is everything. If you have impact windows or shutters, a good roof WITH STRAPS, properly installed doors, and sufficient food and water, generally you are going to be in good shape. The homes to watch out for in Florida are those built between 1970 and 1992; These were marginal at best and at worse are downright deathtraps. But with proper modification, they can be made to be reasonably safe. The problem is that costs a lot of money... Great video!

I lived in Florida for many years and went through 5 different hurricanes - I was in Orlando. They also help spin up tornadoes out of nowhere - especially the ones at night. I never lived right on the water - too, too many risks. Loved it while I was there but, to be honest, there really is nowhere to be safe from hurricanes. Florida is not that wide & hurricanes have traveled across very quickly. Plus you’re not that far above sea level. Loved it but wouldn’t want to retire there. 😊

@stephenfiore99605 ай бұрын
@@johnliberty3647 …..The Oaks are Beautiful in the “Oak Belt” around Gainesville area. Tons of shade. (North Central Florida.) In Cape Coral Florida (SW Florida ) the government forces you to mow your lawn, or they will mow it for you for a fee. This causes very little shade so the sun is constantly beating down on you. Very bright. Advantages is lower chance for forest fires to spread and less chance of vagrancy & lower crime since everyone can watch out for their neighbor. Also you see tons of beautiful sun sets because no trees are in the way. But higher chance for skin cancer. I got tired of constant Hurricane threats in Cape Coral. Been living in Gainesville Florida & Hurricanes aren’t that bad because they die out a lot by time they hit us.

I'm not sure but I've never seen it happen with all the storms we've had in 30 years.
@CarlWithACamera7 ай бұрын
Surge height at landfall is ultimately dictated by the expanse and intensity of the storm, the height of the tide at the time of landfall, and the slope of the sea floor approaching land. The longer and shallower the sea floor, the greater the storm surge will be. So, true, but not the only factor.
@MP99.7 ай бұрын
gulf stream is right off the coast here in PBC so the shelf drops off quickly so surge is not as much of an issue on this coast. There is still surge but the magnitude is significantly less.
