Florida's MOST Controversial Fish... Catch and Cook (Red Snapper)

Every year we drive up to Panama City, Florida for the Red Snapper season opening. Our buddy Joshua Sauls runs a charter operation called Heritage excursions. Our goal was to deep drop and grouper fish the first day and then fish for red snapper on our second day (June 1) when you are allowed to keep Red Snapper in the state of Florida. Unfortunately June 1st the Gulf of mexico had 10ft seas and we were unable to make it out there! We still had a great time and caught red snapper, longtail seabass, vermillion snapper and scamp grouper! Red snapper are a highly controversial fish and heavily regulated in the state of Florida. This fish has been highly politicized. Anglers in the Atlantic only have a 2 day season, but anglers in the gulf of Mexico have a longer summer season lasting several weeks.

I use to fish all the time. I would get mad, upset, angry, when I struggled. I havent been able to fish for 2.5 years because of a serious health issue. As strange as it sounds, I'v learned more about fishing and life sitting at home reflecting, than Iv learned any of my trips out. The down time has given me the chance to slow down, and look at everything. Fishing is more then just throwing lines in the water, catching lots fish, having expensive gear, chasing that PB. Iv been able to stop, look back, and appreciate all the trips iv taken, even the bad ones. Iv learned its not all about those things, its not all about that perfect trip out on the water. Its about being outside, learning how to do something on your own. Its about spending time with friends & family, its about cooking up a great meal and talking, laughing enjoying time together. Doing what you love with the ones you love Making those memories for a lifetime. A bad day fishing with someone you love, is better then a perfect day fishing by yourself. If I'm ever able to get back out there, those memories will be the only "PB" I'll be chasing. Im new to your channel but...this video really hit close to home for me with what Iv learned. I hope others watch, and enjoy the same. - FM

The worst worst worst worst way to vent a fish!!! By piercing a hole that big it has no way of building pressure in its gut. That fish will more than likely die now. You should use a proper venting needle. A big old filleting knife is by far the worst way.

Absolutely the wrong way to vent a fish. They make venting tools for just this reason, a knife in the side of the fish isn’t the right way. Red snapper have rebounded because of the conservation efforts made by technology and effort. Please get the right tool for the job.

I can’t imagine getting hurt and not being able to fish for 4 months. I fish probably 300+ days a year (own two charter boats), fish bass tournaments, musky tournaments, ice fishing. I don’t know where I’d find the time for another hobby. Grew up fishing from the time I could walk. Started working on a small charter boat for Striped bass and mackerel at 13, and sold my soul for a 20 foot mako at 19, 23 years ago, which I still use exclusively as a Striper/mackerel charter, I still have it today, along with an Everglades 295, which we use for Tuna/blue shark/sturgeon charters, and Caymas 28 HB, which is my personal boat, but I also use during the busiest parts of the season as an exclusive family charter (I take it out when families want to rent a private boat, and don’t want to be on board with other strangers fishing for whatever reason). I’m looking at buying a bluefin tuna license from the man who gave me my first job, as he’s retiring, so I’m now looking at a 4th charter boat, a Regulator 37 or 41, specifically for that purpose. Just trying to decide if 4’ is worth the extra 300k. So yeah, you might say I’m obsessed. Good thing I put all that money in tech stocks in the late 90’s and eary 00’s! 401k’s they said! Get a real job, theres no money in sport fishing they told me! Stop wasting your time with foolishness! Only my dad was behind me. Follow your dreams, people. Took a lot of hard work, but my summers are fully booked, often a year in advance! My winters (Canada) are filled with trips south to hunt and fish, and some fantastic Canadian ice fishing with friends! The only thing I don’t really get much time for is bass tournament fishing, which I absolutely love. Next Summer I plan on only captaining for Tuna, and handing off the Everglade to my first mate to captain. He’s only 22, but I think he’s ready to take over. That will free me up until July 15, which is when our annual bluefin season starts. I can at least travel with my Ranger to do some opens. Hope the father-in-law gets well soon, and is able to fish to his maximum potential. I had no intention of writing such a long post, but a week of hard rain and heavy wind has me going completely stir crazy. Five days inside with no sunlight whatsoever.

Those guys are professionals and they don't have a venting tool?!! Venting with a filet knife..........well a likely slow death for those unfortunate snapper.
@alexanderren1097
@alexanderren1097 Жыл бұрын
Doesn’t actually matter whether you use a venting tool or knife. Plenty of studies have shown that vented fish have poor survival rates. The regs requiring venting are outdated but as usual regulators can’t be bothered to change them. Descending tools are much better for fish survival but unfortunately most people don’t know about them
@wayneroberts4144
@wayneroberts4144 Жыл бұрын
@@alexanderren1097 Well with all due respect I disagree in part. A venting tool used properly releases trapped gases instantly and either that or a descending device is required equipment on board any vessel fishing for reef fish in Florida state waters and common sense would agree in federal waters too. Many other factors are involved in a fishes survival such as how long the fish is out of water, etc but for under 20 dollars a venting tool helps a lot. I do agree in part that a descending device is the better of the two but a filet knife.............that is really amateur.
@alexanderren1097
@alexanderren1097 Жыл бұрын
@@wayneroberts4144 Whether a venting tool is used or a knife, it’s still puncturing the fish’s body cavity and leaving a route for infection into the area where the fish’s major internal organs are. A venting tool may look better but it does effectively the same physical damage as a knife. I agree that there are other factors that can effect survival, how long the fish is out, etc. but stabbing them with either a venting tool or knife isn’t going to help

I went out with 3 others on Monday out of Destin. We smoked the Red Snapper. Started fishing a 7AM and had our 8 keeers by 8AM. I caught 4 of those myself. I'm going back out on the 24th when state waters are open. IMHO there isn't anything in the ocean better than a Red Snapper. Wish the government would pull it's head out of its rear and let the public catch a fair amount. They are far from over fished.

Surely you treated that red snapper like that for comments so here ya go. A knife is an illegal venting tool, out of season snapper cannot be held up for pictures, they are to be pulled in, landed and vented immediately and back into the water where a dehooking device must be used for release. The color change of that snapper, which is a highly regulated and a limited resource, the color change is almost certain death. I’m going to assume you fillet and released that dude. Nice catch!

Aloha, can anyone explain to me the difference between vertical jigging and slow pitch jigging? And why is everything in metric? Did it originate overseas? I’ve jigged for halibut and rockfish before and we just called it jigging, even though it was 250-400 feet deep. Mahalo.

Great family and friends video. Loved it as always. Was just remembering how much I used to cringe when you cooked. Cheap olive oil. Fake lime and limón juice….You’ve come a long way. I think you would have been a great Dr. but think you found your calling. Ps. Always blacken fish with butter 😀

Brooke get the shark magnets, tie it to a carabiner and let it slide down line. The magnet hangs below the hooked fish and it keeps the suspect Sh...fish from getting ur prize.
