I like you mods. I worked for Tactical Tailor in Lakewood, WA and we modified / repaired thousands of Alice packs from all over the world. My special mod was to cut the bottom 1/3 off of a plastic trash can and use it as an inside base. Also when camping I pull it out and use it as water container to wash with. Thanks for making a great video.
@FloridaBoyBushcraftSurvival

Thanks! I also make that mod and have a video on it also. It is harder to find a trash can that will fit the medium pack than it is to find one to fit the large pack...

Back when I was issued these, instead of a false bottom we threw a spare pare of boots in the bottom, laid on the sides heal to toe, and filled in the center with spare underwear or anything that fit. Same idea, make a flat bottom. Good tips.

I run a medium alice with a 1606MC frame, molle 2 straps and waist belt. I use the webbing at the top to attach a molle waistpack right under the lid, a sleep system carrier at the bottom, 2 - 200 round saw pouches on the bottom sides or canteen covers if no 3L hydration bladder in the radio pouch. You can add nod pouches on the waistbelt or a left and right 3 mag with grenade molle pouch for quick storage. Gives me plenty of room for mess kit, fire kit, ifak, sleep gear of choice and a DD tarp or Hammock. Good video man. I use a 13 gallon trash can cut off to fit my pack. I run 550 cobra braids for handles on it. I dont use it a lot but if I need to haul water I can. Big plus is if you use a white trashcan it makes it easier to see in your pack. Bungies are great for setting a fly. 👍I rarely use 550 'A-lines' anymore. Just keep the 550 for guylines really already attached to the tarp. Easton stakes with 550 loops to quickly attach to the guylines that way of you gotta pack up in a hurry you dont lose your stakes. Wooooohoooo. You got me all excited, lol. I love Alice. She's my go to girl.

Grab handle is slick. I still have my large ALICE from when I was airborne infantry. That space between the frame and ones back is for ventilation usually. Granted, I sweat like a 500lb gorilla. Admittedly, I was lazy and sent it to tactical tailor to be tricked out. It's actually my backpacking backpack now. It will never break.

Love the mods, Brother ! Keep 'em coming ! While I was in, we used to take our regular bungees (the camo colored ones) and wrap them around the frame that faces our back. Hook it on the left or right side, then over the opposite side, then hook it to the starting side. It keeps the bungees from hanging up on anything in your pack, plus it still gives you that space to place that tarp or other things in there (we used our VS-17 panels in there). Keep up the great work, and I look forward to more of your videos, including the canteen cup tuesdays.

I put my shoulder and waist belt from my molle 2 pack on my large alice frame and that is without a doubt, the most comfortable ruck i own. Ive also fashioned 2 horizontal compression straps and quick buckles on the lid straps and it compresses down nice and secure to the frame. Its 10x more comfortable than even my usmc ilbe pack thats made by arcteryx which is suppose to be one of tge best rucks made. Ive just never been able to get it to fit my back correctly and it weighs about 9 pounds empty.

Yeah, tell me about the weight thing. I humped my 60lb med alice a couple miles down to a creek bed in southern Ohio. I'm in my early seventies, and although I enjoyed the two day camp, it was always in the back of my mind about getting my sorry butt back up that hill. Got packed up and squared away and started up the trail when a Ranger showed up in a Polaris. Has to be said that the Good Lord watches out for kids, drunks and foolish old people. I use a hammock set up, but just need the discipline to say 'no' to some of the stuff I want to pack. Good vid on the mods!

FloridaBoy Survival How I clean my canteens: I wash them with hot water, fill up with hot water but leave about 10-20% empty, replace cap and vigorously shake. Empty water. Refill and put one denture cleaner tablet in canteen (I use Efferdent). It kills 99.9% of germs, is safe on plastics, human safe. Let sit overnight then wash out canteen. I also use it on my water bladders instead of Camelbak’s overpriced cleaner tablets, which are the same stuff, really.

I’m 34 but in my early 20s, I bought an Alice pack with every intention and going out into the wilderness but being how I’m afraid of the woods and going out by yourself when you’re afraid of the woods kind of sucks I never pulled the trigger on that I just came across my old Alice pack it used to have the frame But I guess I took it off and misplaced it. It had some mods done to it. The buckles on the wrapped handle shoulder straps as well as a waist strap that was attached to the frame that is misplaced with the frame. The rubberized coating on the inside of the main flap on my ALICE, large, pack is peeling off. Do you have any suggestions for a replacement coating? Everything is inside the pack is inside one of many of those waterproof inner bags, found a bunch of those pouches at a Army/Navy surplus store. So nothing gets wet. But, would like to replace the coating. That ALICE pack has been in use for over 25 years. No tears, rips, or broken seams. I suppose that coating just has an amount of expected use by the manufacturer. Just worn out through use. Would like to recoat the material. Tried rubber cement, silicon gasket paste, and, a tent waterproofing solution from a sporting goods store. No joy for results.

Number one thng you can do, is put it on a MOLLE frame. It rides higher and closer to the body and has *way* better straps and belt, fir superior weight distribution.

@@FloridaBoyBushcraftSurvival It works, thats for sure and has some advantages over the MOLLE, but the MOLLE straps and belt, above all, are soooo much better.
