Sorry, but I would argue about that. They are built tough, but there are also built to torture. In fact, I think we usually refer to them as torture sacks more than we referred to them as Alice packs. The packs that they have issued since my Army time in the 80s are far superior.
@abntemplar825 жыл бұрын
@@rockymntnliberty not sure what pack you are talking about. I was on active duty from 1982 - 2004. the only packs that I was issued, or I should say regularly issued, was a large Alice pack. now there was a time in the late 80's when the army gave certain units a Mountain pack. but as a paratrooper those didn't last more than a couple months as they could not be jumped safely.

Since you have the flex seal, here's a bit of tip from a construction worker. Spray the bottoms and backs of your carry cases (tools, personal belongings, etc). When your stuff moves from vibration or the station it's on is mobile, it'll stick to it a bit more and will have a harder time to run on you while you're busy with your task/project.

This is a PSA I did this to my Medium Alice pack, make sure to get all the factory rubberized coating off the lid before. My Alice pack had a lid that was just starting to peel and I tried all I could to get it off with about 25% of the lid still covered with the original rubber that wasn't ready to come off. The areas where the rubber was peeled off almost immediately after letting it sit for 24 hours it made it a lot easier to get the remaining old rubber off but you'll have to re apply to cover the areas that peeled off. Otherwise great solution.

Thank you for sharing another good use for FlexSeal. I would also like to share an idea I got from another KZbinr: using FlexSeal to apply a thin durable "grip tape" to AR magazines. I have used it on both steel mags and PMAGs and am quite happy with the results. Be sure to mask off enough of the top to ensure the FlexSeal does not rub inside the magazine well and hinder insertion/removal. Also, mask off enough of the bottom to ensure the floorplate can be removed. I have had good results with 3M blue painter's masking tape. If the PMAGs have a round-count window, mask that too. The FlexSeal seems to deaden and quiet down the noise the magazine makes when it hits something (gear, mag well, ground, etc), especially with a couple coats.

Back in the 80's/90's we would use the dip coating to reseal those lids and other worn pouches. It was sold in pint size cans and used to coat or recoat pliers or small tools used for electrical work. Pretty much the same thing but thicker because it's a non aerosol product.
@RangerReject Жыл бұрын
I use Tool Dip for rubberizing tool handles. It works great on the bottoms of packs and places where you don’t want something like a sharp ski edge to cut the fabric. You can get it in OD and other colors. You can spray it, or thin and paint it on.

I was really hoping to see a lid replacement. That said, if you're using flex seal, use the 'liquid'. The aerosol type is stiff and deteriorates quickly. In fact, not quite as 'quick and easy', but for a membrane repair, I recommend appx 60/40 flex seal/GE Silicone II(by volume), thinned with mineral spirits, to about thick latex paint consistency. This makes a really tough and flexible 100% waterproof membrane, with a very thin, lightweight application.

Love my Alice packs. I use a medium size for shopping,instead of a plastic bag (that the store charges you for). And I have a large Alice loaded with gear for my Go bag😉.

Your absolutely correct about those rubberized inner liners smelling like vomit. They smell like that even when they are brand new. Good thing that smell doesn't get into your clothes when you stuff those liner bags. I tried baking soda and it worked to get rid of the smell. So no smell, but, had baking soda all over my gear. I guess the general rule of thumb is to get something, you have to give up something. Can't have your cake and eat it too. My ALICE large pack top flap deteriorated too. Along with a rain poncho. Flexseal to the rescue! Hope there is some OD Green color.

Dr Larsen, in the 101st did you have a Medium or a Large ALICE pack? And who in your experience had the Mediums and who had the Larges?
@christopherlarsen77885 жыл бұрын
@@docback63 - I served in four Infantry regiments. Two were Mechanized Infantry - the 1/17th Buffalos and the 1/314th Mech. I also served in two Light Infantry - the 5/20th Regulars and the 3/187th Rakkasan Air Assault. In the Light and Air Assault units, we were issued large ALICE rucks. In the Mech units, we were issued medium ALICE rucks. What we learned was this - the larger your ruck, the more the damned Army would force you to carry in the field! Plus, the more "Light" the unit, the more the Army expected us to be pack mules. That is the exact OPPOSITE of the Light Infantry concept, but we couldn't explain that to the 18th Airborne Corps. We wanted NO PART of that damned CFP-90 rucksack that was issued to the 10th Mountain Infantry! For reference: 39.5 Liters (2400 cu in) Interior Space = Medium ALICE Rucksack (pockets included) 62.2 Liters (3800 cu in) Interior Space = Large ALICE Rucksack (pockets included) 111 Liters (6800 cu in) Interior Space = CFP-90 Rucksack (complete) Yeah, having done some extreme cold temperature operations in Korea with daily highs at -5F and lows at -25F, I can appreciate the CFP-90 as an arctic rucksack. Aside from that, NO THANKS! Makes sense for the 10th Mountain Infantry, I suppose.

Thank you, I love the Alice Pack, bomb proof IMO, we werr issued the Large Ruck in 80'. I use the Large for BOB and extended camping trips. I am going try this on my Butt pack as well.

I’m a photographer I have very expensive backpacks but as with most packs taking off the pack and laying it down tends to wear the fabric on the bottom or if you have it set down and it’s raining and the ground is wet it tends to soak through this may be a preemptive strike to prep my gear for longer lasting waterproofing thanks for the idea

Great way to keep the ALICE pack going man, nice. I love the mannequin dressed as the Vietnam Marine, with the aviator shades he must be at Danang Airfield. Hey Brent, I saw Apocalypse Now "Final Cut" last weekend in IMAX theatre and yes it was f'ing awesome man!

Brent, I just found your channel a week or so ago; I have to admit that I was perplexed at first about your interest in Vietnam era gear in the first video of yours that I watched. I was thinking; why would one of the new corps marines be so interested in our old so called obsolete field gear (hard corps) (ya you know, us old corps, the ones that had twice the PT requirements and we did real sit ups, and we thought that our body armor was when we took cover behind our big balls!) (just a "little" burn on you "new bees"). I think that the USS Boxer was also on the float that evacuated Vietnam from March through June of 1998. Back then I was still using the older 782 gear setup for web gear.(oh, FYI, the web belt in your video with the snaps around the center it is called a "pistol belt") Any way; I have trunks full of what you scrounge to collect, I got issued my "new/ never used medium Alice pack in June of 1978, I still have it and it's still ready to go! I got a couple of those big liners that you showed by convincing a couple of Army reservists on their two weeks in the summer that they didn't need them, and that I would "get ride" of them for them! dam, the reserves are dumb! I gathered most of my collection when I was the motor pool maintenance inspector at both the 3rd and 1st Div's. Everybody knows that when you turn in your vehicle for maintenance that you remove all gear! Dam, their dumb too! One General that was returning from 29 palms had his driver drop his M151 off at the motor pool for Maint. and was rather upset when his field lantern set disappeared from the back seat. "It must have been those other drivers from operations SIR!" I still use those lanterns with my GP small tent when I deer and bear hunt, going on 45 years now, never had to use the spare parts yet! "True story"...Lt butter bar and Capt butt hole busted me one day for obeying orders from a Navy Commander, (out ranks them both, "together") (oh I had a secret clearance, and the Capt. was jealous, when I checked into the company he raked me over the coals about it until my TOP "MSTRSGT" called him out and shut him up) Dam their both dumb! So I wrote a letter of appeal to the battalion Commander, "a Full Bird Coronal" He received my letter about fifteen minutes after the said Division Commander, " the General" called him to congratulate him for having the "only" Marine that received a "Noteworthy" result on that weeks FMF PAC inspection that worked for him at Headquarters Battalion 1st Mar Div. That Marine was none only than Cpl. me, myself, and I ! And he also notified him that next week the HQ Marine Corps Quantico, was sending a teem of 3 officers to study and implement Marine Corps wide, the system that I developed to track and validate modifications on every vehicle that my motor pool was responsible for! .....Long story short; Lt. butter bar and Capt. butt hole were ordered never to interfere with me again and I was also given a cushy job as the new FMF PAC Inspector for Motor T at the 1st Mar. Div. !............ So any Officers out there reading this;... NEVER F...WITH YOUR NCO's! They are SMARTER than you are!....WE RUN and OWN THE Marine CORPS!..............Have fun with your channel Brent!... CARRY ON MARINE! ...Semper Fi

You show the WP bags next to the MACs sack at the end. The 65L SeaLine dry bag for the ILBE main pack will work well with the LG ALICE main compartment as well, and the 56L for the Medium ALICE

Yup, I know there are a couple videos out there of guys doing that to other packs of theirs. I'm sure it works. I would try to keep the drain holes in tact though at the bottom so water can escape.

Us old timers used a lot of 100 mph tape on our Alice waterproof bags, rubberized wet weather gear, pancho and rain boots. No Flex Seal back then.

Great instructional! I've got an old LARGE ALICE pack (10x better than the mediums, for real pack-size!), and it's got 'rubber rot' really bad...and while it's easy to take the old 'floor brush' to the pack to strip the old rubber off COMPLETELY (nothing like rubber-cancer showing through like truck bed texture), but I wanted the original water-proofing on the flap to be as close to original as possible...and I really never gave flex seal a thought...until now! Headed to the hardware store.... SEMPER FI! 0311 to heavy gunner!

FYI...the Large ALICE pack is 3,880-cubic inches, for those who want a 'civilian size comparison' to commercial packs...

you can also flex seal the tops of the pouches, lets the rain run off and not through

Hi Brent, GREAT VIDEO!!!! Great Idea. I am lazy but have you thought about spraying the rest of the pack with Scotchguard? Spraying the rest of the pack with Scotchguard might make it waterproof like a new Maxpedition gear bag. FYI I am a big fan of the A.L.I.C.E. Packs, they are nicely compartmentalized.

Great tip for keeping a great piece of gear field ready. I'm guessing the same could be done with the old waterproof bags we were issued, they tended to suffer the same kind of deterioration over time.

Painting on the Plasti-Dip tool handle dip gives you a more pliable result than the flex seal spray, but looks like either gets the job done. I use Em-Nu to repaint the metal sliders and eyelets on my old ALICE packs.
