Great content as always Jonathan. Would love to hear Jamie's input as well. Two years ago I actually quit my District Director role at one of the nation's largest pharmacies after 16 years to pursue my own lawn care/property maintenance company for many of the same reasons you mentioned as well. Yes I got paid a six figure plus salary but the time away from family was killing me as well as the expectation to have my phone with me 24 7 to answer emails and work around the clock, politics, etc. My wife was the one that really pushed me to leave my corporate life behind and pursue something that I loved doing. We decided to actually sell our house in the cities and leave the craziness behind. We moved to our lake home up North in a quaint cabin town to raise our two little kids as this is also where I wanted to opened my business that focuses primarily on property maintenance for vacation homes so we could work and play in the beautiful Northwoods. The amount of quality family time since the transition has been amazing and life is good. Wish you and everyone watching a Happy and prosperous 2020. PS - any way you can bring us along for a quick ride in your boat sometime, would love to see the FL water amidst all the cold and snow up here in WI:). Take care.

Hey great content! I’ve been an LEO for 10 years now and make $39,900 topped out and I work for the biggest Sheriffs Office in Arkansas (Little Rock area). I transferred out of the Homicide division in January of 2019 because of the time away from family for the past 3 1/2 years. PLUS working a lot of “Off duty security” to supplement income. I decided in September 2019, the end of our mowing season, to start my Lawn Care and Landscaping business. I licensed and insurance it. I wasn’t expecting to make much because it was the end of the season. October I grossed $4000, November I grossed $3,800 and December $1200. I was shocked seeing that I made that especially with me not being from the area I live and not knowing anyone. I’m certain I can replace my income this spring and will be full time. I’ve bought and paid for all equipment to run the business except my truck and mowers. Neighborhood word of mouth and social media got my business going. I love your financial content instead of the mowing tall grass videos lol

I'm leaving 14 yrs of Missouri Department of Corrections behind this Spring. I'm nervous yet optimistic. As I'm watching this video I am sifting through my direct mail postcards I mailing out this Monday, almost 5000 of them. Plus a 1000 door hangers I'll be beating the payment soon with them! I've always loved working outside and mowing/landscaping... Time to leave behind 14 yrs of grossly underpaid ...long shifts and dealing with convicts. Thanks for your videos, you and Brian have been a great inspiration to me getting my ducks in a row to make this change in my life!

WOW..Cool. Very ironic. I'm a Corporal with a Sheriff's Office over here in Louisiana. You are right, there's no good money as a Law Enforcement Officer. I have ran my lawn business for about a year not. My first year I made about $15,000 for the year. I have decided to slowly grow my business and eventually I will retire from law enforcement with a minimum of 13 years of service. Thanks for the transparency. I’d like to hear your wife’s side of the story. You did very well your first year. I struggled because even though I had some great advice from KZbin folks including you, I changed a sound game plan in exchange for my own(due to impatience). Big mistake and ended up chasing the $$$ working for low ballers all over town. I got more dialed in last year, focused on route density, marketing target neighborhoods, and a website. Much better results. I hope this helps someone to not make my Craigslist mistake. PS: there are a lot of cheesy, flashy Lawn Care channels, but yours is quality info from a genuine achiever with no hidden agenda. Thanks again for what you share!!!

Besides getting to know marketing and finances get to know landscaping. Know the difference between shade plants and full sun plants, how to trim each plant type, what plants grow fast, slow, or are dwarf varieties, know all the different types of grass varieties and what grass is full sun vs shade grass, get to know mulch vs bark, gravel types, sprinklers, Christmas lights...etc....etc...etc. I could go on and on but the more knowledgeable you are the more clients feel comfortable using you even if you're a brand new company. Also find your niche in landscaping. Our niche for my landscaping coming is we're a full service landscaping company meaning one call and all they're landscaping needs are met. We do landscape installs, sprinklers, waterfalls, lawn maintenance, stone work, fertilization and on and on. I slowly but surely started learning new things all the time and kept adding more new things that out company could do. I moved to Tampa in December of 2015 and started a landscape company in Feb 2016 with a Dodge ram and some hand tools. Today we have a 4 door Kodiak w/dump bed, a 30k dump truck, 2 3500 duallys, 18 ft enclosed + 28 ft. Enclosed trailer, 14k dump trailer, 18 ft. flatbed trailer, 3 ride mowers, and brand new cat mini-ex. Everything is paid for except the cat mini ex bc they offered 1% financing. There's so much work in Florida it's ridiculous. We ended up doing just over 120k out first year and now our average is about 42k per month. Find the places where it's good to buy used vs new. Warranties can be great but new price payments can cripple a company. Whatever you do in landscaping do better than your best work, be honest with your clients don't hesitate to say you don't know how to do something, get the work done fast and efficiently but also professionally, but also don't be the cheap guy. Set your rates to make money and find people that want to pay you what you're worth. Don't be the cheap guy that ruins the market. I always tell other landscapers if everyone charges what they're supposed to then it's a win for all contractors bc everyone gets more money, don't be the cheap guy and take food off your table. I wish more people would share pricing bc it would only help contractors in whatever market they're in. It would help stop the low ballers and new contractors who don't know how to bid. I tell any contractor that ask what I charge bc I'm not in the business of selling my company off of pricing. I'm selling my company off of reputation, a brand, who we are as a company. GOOD LUCK ALL YOU NEW LANDSCAPERS! LOTS MONEY TO NE MADE!

Since I started watching your channel I always wondered how big of a factor your wife played in supporting the household financially when you first started full time. Glad you are going to bring her on. When you put your wife in a video sharing how she felt, I will be sitting with my wife watching. I am a teacher that is struggling with getting started, but I have a vision to be big enough to quit teaching and do this full-time.

Man I have an important question. Of course I hit like on all your videos and been a subscriber ever since I found the channel. Lol Here is my question. I am wanting to start my lawn business this season. I have every piece of equipment I need, including a backpack blower. My lawn mower is a steering mower and not a zero turn. Here it is lol: will I be okay starting with a steering mower instead of a zero turn mower? I am very nervous about trying to start with a steering mower but my wife and I have just bought a house, like closing tomorrow on it and I do not really have the funds to go out and buy a zero turn just yet.. I have a truck, trailer, weed eaters, backpack blower. Lots of yard tools like rakes, shovels and lots of others... This steering most thing is really bothering me.. I have already ordered business cards, got a name picked out, about to buy the domain for the website, will subscribe to yard book when the time comes... But this steering mower has got me bothered.. Thank you in advance for any advice friend. Also for the content you put out.. has help me tons!

I think you can get it done with the steering mower, but it sounds like you are self conscious about it. Start with the steering mower, and see if you can get financed through sheffield financial for a zero turn mower. I PROMISE it will be so worth it to get into a decent zero turn.

Great video. I am actually a teacher and do the lawn care. I can totally relate because I actually make more mowing than teaching. The thing that currently holds me back from going full-time in lawn Care is the health insurance I have for my family. Any advice on that. I assume you had health insurance with the law enforcement.

Guth Lawn Care Washington, IL I’m in the same situation, it’s a grand a month for my family of three, is it worth the extra 5 lawns a week just for health ins. This will be my second season and I’m leaning towards yes. If I were a teacher I would say no, that’s just me.

@@texasghost6725 just to clarify, you are saying it would be worth it to quit, but have to pay your own health insurance? Why do you think it wouldn't if you were a teacher though?

I did carry the health insurance. My wife works part time at a local hospital and she now carries our insurance. I do agree that insurance is really important, but don't let it hold you back. There are options out there that work well for small business owners. I'll do a video on this topic soon. Thanks for commenting.

I just started our weed control/fertilization and pest control business on the side. We are at the “7 friend client stage”. What was the best marketing strategy that worked to really get the phone ringing? It feels that we have done all this work ( great website, good equipment, etc.…) but now I’m not sure where to go from here…

Hey love your videos . What do you think about hiring a guy who has been in the lawn care business on the first year to help me learn the ropes. Or should I go it alone the first year ?

I've been working for a government contract landscape company for the last few years and recently laid off (they lost their contract and wanted to cut costs leading up to their exit). I had been working a few side landscape / lawn care jobs and went "official" (taxes, website, etc to be legit and not seen as the kid down the street working for $5) in 2018 but kept it as a part time while getting the steady paycheck from the government job. Since layoff I have not been able to find the guaranteed bi-weekly paycheck that the wife would like and she's been pushing me to work at a few places she wants me to work at (but they pay just above minimum wage)... So I guess my question is this, if your spouse is NOT supportive of you having your business become more than a side hustle for a few extra dollars (wants that guaranteed paycheck of $x) are there any steps one can take to help them understand and maybe eventually become supportive if they give things a chance?
