By hoarding energy. Basically you stop spending energy and just keep collecting it by collecting clams/starfish/crabs on the beach, getting energy from wellness spots and visiting neighbors. Once you have pets, you can collect energy from them as well. At the beginning this is slow, but gets faster. I am now at level 36 with quite a few pets and extra wellness spots, so I can get around 600 Energy per day. So in about a month you get to about 20k energy. Growing crops and trees can be an issue if you don't want to spend any money on the game. In that case you can either alternate between hoarding energy and spending it, or you can set a target (say 40k), and above that you start spending the energy. At the beginning it may not be worth to do this; instead it may be better to just focus on the permanent islands and more-or-less ignore the temporary ones..
