Floris has been in existence as a perfumier and grooming accoutrements store since 1730. For almost 300-years the business has remained in family ownership and has produced the finest fragrances and grooming products from its flagship shop situated at No 89 Jermyn Street in the St James area of London.
The No 89 fragrance, named after the store of its inception, has been part of the Floris range since 1951 and has been a favourite of many customers, including Ian Fleming, the creator of the world famous Agent 007 James Bond.
In this video review, we discuss the heritage of the Floris brand and review the Floris No 89 scent to consider its relevance in the fragrance collection of the elegant chap.

Yeah, I like the floris soaps. They lather super fast, give amazing slickness and a really good post shave skin feel. For those that are interested in the 89 scent alone, the tabac original soap and after shave lotion have the exact same scent and actually share a lot of the same ingredients for a fraction of the floris stuff price.

Totally agree! I just bought some and really want to love this soap, but even in my decades of wet shaving experience I cannot get a decent later. Scent is decent but it is nothing special. Amen. You mention Trumper; huge fan of Coconut and Violet. Cheers!

Very envious of your beautiful backdrop for the outdoor shave.Not used Floris soaps looks to do the job, a lot of the artisan soap makers have a high price point, but a guess a tub like that will last quite sometime. Lovely job.

When i first applied the No 89 eau de toilette i thought it was way to floral and had reservations but after an hour or two the woody and warmer tones shone through. I guess skin types play a part in how it reacts. 7/10

Triple milled soap is very hard and very long lasting. So you did get your monies worth. It requires quite a lot of hydration to build up a super lather with super slickness. Try face lathering and just dipping the tips adding very small amounts of water at a time. When it's nice and hydrated splay the brush and watch the lather explode. You will notice a big difference. Some hard soaps can be duff. Trumpers hard soaps are notorious for being difficult to lather. Nice outdoor shave Ash

Cheers Jim, I've used it a few more times since this video was shot and it has become a little easier to work into a lather. It does indeed take more work to achieve anything like the results you get with half the effort from cream. I'm still not impressed with the performance for the price, but I suspect this has to be weighed up with the brand name and the added cost due to that. On the whole, I think I'm a simple cream guy (TOBS and Trumper) due to the marvellous lather and the fragrance burst, especially if you don't have lots of time to shave (says me, who spends half and hour standing in a field shaving twice a week). Ash

I've been using it for 2-months now and it's doing ok. I have tried numerous other shave soaps for well under half this price point and they have performed at least as well, if not better. You don indeed pay a premium for that Floris name in this instance.

@@TheChapsGuide I feel the exact same way after years of wet shaving with both soaps and creams. One note: I have found that wetting a soap with a bit of water a few minutes before shaving lets the top of the soap soften. This allows the brush to gather more soap onto the bristles and builds a lather quicker.
@cossiep269

You should really try out a shaving soap called Stirling. Its an Artisan soap from the US and very popular amongst wet shavers and readily available in the UK. The price is very keen at £15 for 6oz. The scent selection is fantastic. I don't think you'll be disappointed.

I've switched completely over to shaving soap. I've discovered that one with a high fat content is best, especially if you use a pre-shave oil first

I'm currently trying a London-based artisan shave soap company, which makes a magnificent lemon bloom fragrance (Oatkcake), which seems to be performing well. But I absolutely agree that high fat content makes the best lather in my experience.

Not easy to be cool and communicative whilst wearing a Charles the First soap beard, so kudos for that. I suppose a Walnut box would cost £30 in most antique fairs, so maybe the soap is just a bonus, however if it's not that good at doing it's one job, then maybe leave it on the shelf. However the stand out feature is, a man in a field, having a shave. Tremendous sir.

It would take a a very good product to tempt me away from Taylor's ofOld Bond Street Sandalwood shaving cream. Over the years I have never found anything more pleasant for a little self indulgence first thing in the morning. Floris look as if they are playing on their name here more than anything. Just one point though concerning bowls. I have never seen anyone work a puck using a bowl as normally simply working the brush on the puck itself is enough to work it into a lather. Very different for creams of course which require a bowl to lather. I was just wondering if you experienced different results doing it that way. Splendid video all the same. Many thanks for sharing your review.

I have to agree - There is nothing I have found better than the big 3 British companies (TOBS, Trumper and Harris). I also like the TOBS Sandalwood, but their Cedarwood is my absolute fave.

I really like DR Harris, just a short stroll from Taylors and equally superb cream in my opinion. I do tend to favour TOBS and Trumper purely down to the fragrance options, but Harris is the equal of both when it comes to quality.
