I love his comment about being calm and that when you are calm you can live in a good way. I am also a HUGE fan and believer in his thoughts on consistency, I started running 2 years ago after being diagnosed with high blood pressure, fatty liver and very much overweight. 2 years later I am running for my Boston qualifier in 5 days! I run 6-7 days a week and never miss a run. Consistency and volume was crucial to my success. Eliud is my main inspiration for how I train.

Confidence is like an umbrella in the rain. It will not chase away the rain but will allow you to stand in the rain. I recently ran a new half marathon PB in horrific wind and rain At first my confidence was knocked because I knew the weather was going to make this run hard. But, I had confidence in my MAF and threshold focussed training along with my discipline and consistency. I knocked 1.5 mins off of my previous PB. Eliud you're an inspiration to us all!

My favorite lesson is his ability to stay calm, smile and just do the work. Amazing how he is able to do positive self talk without the gritty emotional push some people believe is necessary to make the self-talk work.

Eluid is a wonderful human being and deserves none of the hate that he has received over Kiptums passing. Lets hope that this dark cloud can lift for him leading up to, and including the Paris Olympic Marathon. He looked a very sad man in this podcast, and we all know that mental well being is the key to any performance.

For me, the best takeaway from the video is at 23:22 Learning to embrace the sweetness of the pain when you're running for long. Today I ran my first ever 10K in a hilly trail and I was almost stopping but I ignored my thoughts and kept going, at the 7KM all the pain had vanished and I could just see my legs floating in the air, the pain helped me realize some hidden energy reserve that prior to that I had never utilized. I'm planning to continue running on that hilly trail more times and gradually make it x2, then x4 to become my own marathon.

The thing I’ve taken most from this video is the comparison of self confidence to an umbrella protecting you from the rain. The umbrella doesn’t stop the rain, but it gives you a shield to allow you to go about what you’re doing. I’ve had a couple of events not go to plan and it affects self confidence a lot. You begin to doubt whether you can improve on your previous performances. The fear of not performing has been there my last few events and I’m in the process of rebuilding that self confidence. When I rebuild it fully, I’ll be protected from those events that have gone wrong and be able to believe I can go out and beat my times. It’s a great analogy.

As a beginner runner, Eliud Kipchoge's words have been a guiding light for me. One phrase that truly moved me is, 'only the disciplined are free.' This idea has changed my approach to running and life, reminding me that discipline in my training not only brings freedom in performance but also in the way I live. Thank you, Eliud, for being a constant source of inspiration and teaching us the true value of discipline! 💪

"Running is where you are free. If you are not running you are in prison." This stopped me cold. It's so uplifting-and then stark. In prison! How many of us were brought up in a culture that tells us that *running* is prison? That it is tedious, boring, loathsome, punishing? We hated doing sprints in gym class as kids. But to discover low intensity running last year-in large part thanks to your channel, Floris-has been such a joy for me. When people ask about my training routine, I am saddened, and also have to quietly smile, when they shudder and declare that they hate running and could never do it. Give it a chance, folks! To hate and refuse to do that thing that we and our ancestors were born to do... *that* is the real prison, as Eliud said. Running is joyful. Running is freedom. Eliud is so wise, like a spiritual teacher. Thank you for the positivity you spread, Floris. 🙏🏃‍♂

Favorite lesson is journalling. Did this for my mental well-being but never thought of it for training. With this in mind, you can be more mindful of your body and how you are feeling with regards to recovery.

“Preparation and planning” that’s the success, that’s setting yourself for success. I love how lessons from running flow over to all of life’s other goals. Discipline and consistency are the motto for the rest of year in my running, studying, and career goals. Keeping a clear head and chin up will take one farther than they ever thought they could 🤞

I just love his passion for what he does. Consistency, discipline. Health is wealth. These are all things that I try to teach by example to my students. What a wonderful coach! Thank you so much for this interview. It is a great reminder to me to keep going with my students anf help them dig deeper into their passions❤. On a more personal note, Im a mom of three. Ive been an on and off runner in my life, but a few months ago, I decided to run every single day. I am making the decision every day to run. When my kids are napping, I run on the treadmill. When I'm teaching, if im not on recess duty, I go out and run. After this, i am so much more inspired to make the decision to run every day. Just show up for yourself. I have found that even when Im tired, when I show up to run, I feel souch better because I decided to be consistent and disciplined. What a wonderful interview! Grateful I watched. Thank you!

Thank you, Florian, for your enthusiasm and effort in conducting the interview. I appreciate the dedication you put into it. However, I wanted to provide some feedback that might help in future interviews. Questions like “Do you have any advice for young runners?” often lead to very general responses. Instead, diving deeper into specifics can provide much richer content. For example, if Eliud mentioned taking ice baths after marathons, you should follow up with questions about the exact routine, duration, temperature, and any additional details. This approach not only yields more informative answers but also engages the interviewee on a more detailed level. The goal is not necessarily to cover a wide range of topics on a superficial level. Sometimes, it’s much better to dive deep into a handful of topics. This allows for a more meaningful and engaging conversation. Additionally, the point is not to just ask prepared questions but to have a conversation. Being flexible and responsive to the interviewee’s answers will always lead to a more natural and insightful dialogue. Studying the basics of conducting interviews might be beneficial. There are numerous resources available that offer great insights into crafting conversations that elicit detailed and engaging responses from the quests. Keep up the good work, and I look forward to seeing your future podcasts!

I'm beginning to start running again, and I think that the key as Kipchige said is consistency. Results may take months even years to come, bit if you are consistent you will eventually reap the rewards.

Touching on a couple points in the video, I appreciated his philosophic and thoughtful demeanor, which i think is represented well by how he emphasized reading and journaling. When I was younger I thought running fast was just a matter of training hard. Flipping his point around about heath (running) making you better in other areas of life like your job, I think the opposite ia also true. To perform at your highest level in running, whatever that may be, you also need to strengthen all areas of life. Improving mental health, having a strong aupport system of family and friends, dialing in nutrition, learning to appreciate your accomplishments not overly critisize shortcomings, etc. Being willing to educate yourself on topics like these and to reflect and learn from what you've done in the past will allow you to maximize your success.

I think what Eliud means consistency is discipline, it's the beginning, it's hard but you'll get there eventually. I've been running for just 5-6 years, habit is the number 1 factor for improvement. But to get there you first need discipline > routine > habit, at the beginning you will find every excuse not to go for a run, as your habit is formed you will find every excuse to go for a run. At that point you know you've succeeded. When habit has formed then you can play around with different training segments like base, intervals, tempo, etc. Thanks Floris, for sharing this interview with Eliud!

One of my favorite takeaways was his statement, “It’s about making the decision to run, controlling your mind and maintaining discipline.” I woke up this morning at 3:30 and couldn’t fall back asleep. I had planned to run at 5:30. When 5:30 came around I was tired and unmotivated, but I made the decision. I laced up my shoes and made it out the door without entertaining my dissenting thoughts. It was a glorious morning and a productive day. So glad I ran!
