🤔 What's the biggest challenge you face in your ultra running journey? 🏃‍♂️

Absolutely the mental one. Got my first ultra (55k) this Summer and struggling with the idea of keeping going for 7 plus hours 😢

Right now, a knee injury that I didn't take seriously enough. Can't run for the moment, doing some rehab, and I want to focus on trail (I've been mixing trail with road, and messing my training, and my knee, because... well, long story, lesson learned). My goal is to run ultras so I have to get serious about rest and injury prevention exercices, and resume training, hopefully soon. Kudos for including trail running on your channel. (What a privilege, running with Kilian Jornet!)

I’m not built like a runner, but I still have fun training and pretending to be like Kilian (More like Buttery Kilian 🧈 😂). Anyways.. biggest challenge for me is the heat… not able to cool off as well as most real runners.

Training on tired legs, got me through 58 miles, my longest trail run. Unfortunately I didn't train for speed and got timed out. But physically felt able to continue.

Interesting with the nutrition subject. Always wondered how the ultra runners think about nutrition. Now I realize that many of my friends ultra runners are not so informed about how to train the gut and how to timing the nutrition. For my triathlon friends it’s a part of the training. In many of our workouts we got nutrition. It’s written how much nutrition I should take in my training plan for the specific workout. I wonder if my friend in ultra running have that information in her training program. I noticed how much Mark enjoy listening to Kilian 🤩, I do also even I’m not an ultra runner.

It's dependent in the distance. And there are two ends of the spectrum in terms of carbs or low carb, and nuances in what to do when..... In the end everybody needs to experiment and work out what works best for them personally

VO2 max is probably not super important for ultra distance running, because most runners would spend very little, if any, time at VO2 max over such a long distance. I think success at ultra distances has a lot more to do with mental strength, durability and recovery.
@filipjoelsson8344
@filipjoelsson8344 Ай бұрын
True, however, VO2 max helps when you do some of the nice exercises that enable you to do well in an ultra. (Hill repeats downhill kinda relies on you getting up the hill in between.)

it never ceases to amaze me how in a sport that is completely about efficiency, nobody EVER discusses the importance of running form. It's really pretty amazing, particularly when most people are heal strikers.
@jalexb503
@jalexb503 7 ай бұрын
Kilian mixes the heel strike and mid foot strike while running downhill though. Your point is that elite athletes don’t heel strike. You’re wrong. Running sprints and strides will adjust the form and you have to listen to your body and properly recover and address injuries. People have done form breakdowns of Kilian’s and they always say his form is wrong. Really? His form is wrong but he wins 1st place? Okay. Yeah.
@lekcindr
@lekcindr 7 ай бұрын
@@jalexb503 didn’t take in your whole reply but I wasn’t referring to Kilians form or I would have said so specifically. The video is about running tips. Form should be a top tip for and from anyone.
@jsacodes916
@jsacodes916 4 ай бұрын
What you’re pointing to is that form is based on the situation, which is 100% true. Nobody can escape the body yheyre born with. Killian will never run like the Kenyans. Nor will he ever have their legs. He is highly efficient with the body he has. And he has a very high VO2 Max, which makes up for any “inefficiency” anyone may insist he has. Find the runner with perfect form and a low, or even average VO2 Max, and Killian will still whoop their ass. The last point is this: Mindset. Killian is mentally VERY strong. Combine his genetic gifts with his form, fitness, and mental resilience, and you have the winner that he is.

@jsacodes916

I agree. I will say this, the majority of average runners have a stride that is too long, and they’re running too fast for their heart rate, as demonstrated by the heavy labored breathing I so frequently hear when out running. It’s not obvious by watching any of the great runners run, but one of the primary reasons they’re able to do what they do is that they are not redlining themselves. Their heart rate is low for the effort.

I'm in luck I have a flyover nearby, but that's a 30sec downhill on asphalt. I face the same problem. I can be creative for more 'technical' solutions but those are 5-10sec Max, no real downhill training. Guess that's the downside of living in 'the polder'

Does he bring his own potatoes and avocados? Or do you just eat what the aid station has and supplement with geld n stuff
@Kelly_Ben
@Kelly_Ben 6 ай бұрын
It depends on the race. They usually email you shortly before the race to specify what they'll have. That way you can test it out, or know what to bring. I just attempted a 100k whose aid stations had nothing but sugar... gels, gummies etc. Normally I eat real food and supplement with that. I suffered, and learned that if they don't specify they've got sandwiches, soups, quesadillas, Mac n cheese, potatoes etc... I'd better be bringing my own.
