Short story about his mum, my family lived only a few doors away from Johns mums house. Me and my sister were little kids, my parents always used to speak to her, and she would speak to them if we were walking past etc, and every year at Christmas time she would post a Christmas card through the door for me and she would put money in it, and she did this every year for a very long time, and as I got older obviously I was busy in school, and on holidays we were going away with my parents, so never really saw her during my teenage years, yet she would still put a card through the door with money inside for me. To think we were not related in any way shape or form, we were essentially just neighbours down the road to her, but every year she gave me money, she was such a kind hearted lady, I’ll always remember that. Who else gives a stranger money every year, for 10 + years with nothing in return? RIP John and Rita Curry

He was the first man to truly recognize and incorporate artistry into the sport.

Swooonnn....straight back, bent knees, bottom not out, and head held up. Things we hardly EVER see in skating today. Thanks for this series, Floskate. I adore Curry.

He was the Nureyev of Ice - A magnificent artist and beautiful human being.
@melatomic3 жыл бұрын
He was not. John was a mimic of Nureyev, and tried to bring his style to the ice. There was only one Nureyev. I do not mean to undermine Johns influence on ice.

I echo the comment below. John Curry certainly deserves much wider recognition and audience, because by any standards he is an icon in the skating world!

I remember going to see his Theatre of Skating in London with my mother. He was so graceful and beautiful. Just lovely to his finger tips.

So eloquent, and a motivation to win an Olympic gold medal that's so poetic and sets him apart from any sports person I've ever heard of. RIP

@@melatomic Yes, a very strong motivation in Cassius Clay, but his was very different, and stronger. Curry's motivation - win gold so he could have a platform for his artistic ambitions - seems singular to me. And, of course, trivial compared with furthering the cause of African Americans.
@melatomic3 жыл бұрын
@@jajhall not trivial at all,... I did not wish to discount Johns motivations for olympic gold,.. but remind that the olympic platform has been used by others (pre John Curry) as a platform to realise personal ambitions and cultural significance. He is not "set apart", but should share the same stage as the greats.

A true great, an inovator and an artist who's contribution to skating cannot be underestimated. John Curry was a legend.

Makes me sad that he died almost penniless and largely unrecognised for his contribution to not only UK skating , but worldwide

How much you’re missed John. There never has been anyone like u and will never be Maestro. Thank the lord to know u a little before u left us. You went thru so much. U came here as a Maestro and we’ve never gotten over u leaving us so soon. There will never be another to even come close to u and I don’t believe there will ever be tho many have tried, could not get into the highest realm u just started doing. This is a terrible world, not to stay long in for those who remain mesmerized by ur skating and your person. Perhaps you’ve gone home and out of this mess. You’ve always been to good for this world and are so missed, we went thru this discord as much as we were allowed to and will always miss u, ur elegance and skating as u did. Hopefully u are in a high spiritual place now. We have a fb page dedicated to u and that helps us live w the fact that u are gone from us and all involved can relate to your greatness and have each other to relate to while your not w us anymore. You are so loved and missed and I’ve saved ur letters. We will always love and miss u. For a short time we had a perfect Maestro w us. God speed John!

Dear Hollywood: Get Ron Howard to do a movie about this skater who survived the odds. Maybe at least Curry vs. the other Europeans and a Canadian at the 1976 Winter Olympics in Innsbruck, Austria.
