Such a great relaxing channel! I just found you and thoroughly enjoyed your projects. My suggestion is to consider the first Spring project a learning experience rather than a need to complete project. Sounds like it was very worth your attached memories and you have used many learnings to continue your fantastic stitching hobby. Love what you're doing!

I love the sentiment of finishing your angel, but I also get where you’re coming from. I feel like that pattern was a time and a place. You have wonderful memories that you associate with it, but like you said, it’s not your style anymore. And if you do finish it, and you don’t plan to frame it, it will likely just sit in a drawer anyway. I have seen photos of stitching scrapbooks….thats the best way I can think to describe it…where stitchers have saved their stitches in some type of book, like an album. You could do that with your angel, and any other stitches you don’t plan to frame that maybe have a special memory for you. You could do it scrapbook style and include photos of you and Samantha from your youth, of the two of you stitching together. Anyway, just an idea. Good luck with your decision!

She could also write a little note about her stitching history on it and put the start and finish dates with her ages for a family heirloom. I had the Lord's Prayer verses, stitched for my husband's birth in 1955, it was framed and lived in a smoker's house until 1979. I didn't want to use it bc it was yellowed so bad not to mention the smell. Fast forward to 2008, grandchild on the way. I washed the 2 pieces in a bucket of dawn dish soap, gently swoosh around, changing water... they came out beautiful!

I had something similar happen to the Lavender and Lace The Wedding (which is pretty much all white). Here is what I would do if I were you: first I would carefully remove the tape and serge the edges and then give it a very gentle bath. Then I would reassess how off the colors still look - I suspect those edges of the wings still may be more ecru than white even after washing. If I didn't like how the stitching from that new skein at the bottom of the wings looks I would pull just that out and then find a color that matches the rest of the wings (probably not white - an ecru or 712 maybe?) and stitch any remaining white stitches with that color. I wouldn't worry about it not being white - it honestly looks white until you are holding that skein of white up against it. It looks beautiful as it is - those wings don't need to be white. ❤

I hope you finish it. I’ve been stitching since 1982 and have washed every piece I’ve ever stitched - dish soap & cold water and let it soak a good while. Maybe it will come out or lighten and maybe it won’t. I don’t think any of us are perfect, not even your angel. Maybe she’s had some trials to overcome. Think of the stains as learning & experience on her part. And when she’s finished, make her into a project bag. It won’t stay pristine over time either but every time you use it or look at it, the memories will be there.

Hi Arica! If it were me, I think I'd just keep right on stitching that angel. For any new white stitches, I'd just find whatever floss most closely matches what you've got stitched on there now - it's kind of nice with the creamy white. I get that it's annoying that there are clear demarcations in the existing stitching, but if you really don't plan to hang it up after then does that really matter? It gives the piece character, and has an interesting story! I can totally understand not wanting to just frog out allll that white, AND not wanting to just re-stitch it from scratch. Those stitches are special memories! Looking forward to hearing what you choose to do with it. :)

Hi Arica, I love watching both you and Samantha. I know that this angel is a special piece to you so why not give it a try to salvage? A wash can only help the color variation issue. The color difference when you step back isn't going to be a big deal. Why not pick out the the pink ribbon stitched at the bottom, consider that the bottom of the piece, wash the piece and then put it in a frame? Consider it a vintage memory and a legacy piece from when your love of cross stitch began. Please let us know what you decide to do. Kathy E

I agree with the others. Finish it as is as a reminder of all those times. I say this somewhat hypocritically lol. We are of a similar age and I have a large project of a tiger with her cub that I stopped 1/3 of the way through in the late 90's. I have very little projects left from that time but I find that with the recent passing of my Mom, any craft that I worked on back then holds memories. One of these days, I will gather the courage to figure out where I stopped and bring it back into my WIPs.

Keep it in your keepsake box or take a picture of it and leave it behind so you can continue to move forward in your stitching journey. You said it yourself, that piece is about the memories of your teen years your first stitching project, the Doritos stain and different colors of white are the important parts of that piece and I think that you actually have a finished piece just the way it is! Store it away with all those great memories; that piece is full of your friendship which, in the same way, is not finished. 😊

I have a couple of suggestions for your white situation, now I’m new to cross stitch but I’ve been painting for years. So, It’s common for the whites in Oil paintings to yellow when they go into storage and are not exposed to light for a while. However, you can fix it by simply bringing the painting out in a well lit room, you can place it where it will get some indirect light to speed up the process but you can run the risk of bleaching your other colors if you leave it in the sun for a couple of days. So, to avoid that some artists will just leave it in a naturally well lit room or let the painting get some direct/indirect light for several hours and then move the painting back into the still lit room but out of the path if the sun for the rest of the day. This process won’t harm your other colors but it will bring your whites back to white. Now, I don’t know if that will happen with cross stitching but it’s still pigments and it’s a thought. The other thing I was thinking was to leave it as is and very slightly tea dye or how ever you want to dye the floss to gently age it to match. The wing in the back being darker actually works in your favor because it gives you depth. But everything else in the piece not being pure white still reads as white in the piece because it’s the lightest color on the project. Also, I know DMC has several other whites, and maybe trying the whites from Gentle Arts or Classic Color works would help you get to an aged white. I hope this helps!
@FibersandFlossCanada6 ай бұрын
What??!! I have never heard this before! I wonder if it will work on floss too? You are right it hasn’t seen the sun in years. I’m going to give it a wash and then pop it in the sun! Thank you!!
@thepetrifiedgardener31446 ай бұрын
@@FibersandFlossCanada it’s worth a shot! Now it can take like a week to a month to see the difference in Paintings, so patience with this process. But PLEASE watch your other colors, so don’t put it in direct sunlight. Take every other day or daily photos to check your changes because they will be small. The pictures will help you to track the difference because your brain sometimes won’t be able to remember the changes until it’s a BIG change. This way you can also see if your other colors are starting to change and you need to make adjustments. When you check paints or pastels for lightfastness, you do something similar but you expose a sample card that you made with the color to direct light for 6 months to a year and see if there are any changes. This way you can tell how much and how fast a color will fade and if you want to switch out to a different color.

The difference in your stitches will show your youth and the memories that are associated with the piece, you will also have new memories added to the piece. Another option may be that you create some kind of "album" that you can put all your pieces that you don't want on the wall in, that way you can pull them out and see all your wonderful pieces.Then you can place it in as it is with it's story. I have a similar dilemma with a Mirabilia that I started in 1999, my white is not stained but for some reason over the years I took all of the flosses out of the project folder, in having said that some of them are probably still in my stash! I fell in love with the Winter Rose chart and now it's on it's way to me lol Sorry for the essay but I enjoy your videos greatly, so Thankyou for sharing x

The thirty year old lavender and lace is beautiful. I sure hope you can finish it despite the aging with the white floss. And I have stitched on 56/63 with silk floss from bestitchme, and that floss was thick. It did shred a bit, but it was still a beautiful finish. For 46 count and above I’d stick with a 100.3 or above so that it won’t be squishy, and all of the detail comes out clear. But if you are going to stitch with the DMC, go for it on like 36 count and below. Always grateful for your channel, and I think it is also neat that you are reaching out to your local community too. I hope lots of stitchers show up for your event.

Oh, I hope you do finish it. It is so beautiful and you are so close. But wash it first so you know what you are dealing with before you pick your final white. And use a *laundry detergent* soak, such as Tide or All, not soap. Big difference between soap and detergent. I don't know if I would frog any of it, since I don't know what you will have after the soak. Best case, you don't have to take out anything and you match the that off white to something. Certainly don't take out the wing at the back. That difference is due to the way the shade landed on that wing, right? Yep!

I think that you should stitch what you love. If it doesn't fit what you love stitching now, then you shouldn't feel pressured to finish it. I can see that the colour difference is really going to bother you. I'd say that I've finished stitching - and decide what to do with the project as it is. Try washing it - to see if the whites even up - to the point you're happy with it. And then make it into a project bag or folder - just as it is. So you have the happy memories when you look at the bag. And you can spend your stitching time doing what makes you happy now.

I had stains on a nearly finished piece from 30 years ago and I just finished it and I washed it several times and soaking it in Dawn and Oxyclean. It worked! All is clean. You can restitch or cover the difference of colors with metallic blends.

What a great episode. I always enjoy your presentation. As susanserefine3383 recommended, finish stitching with a similar color. Then add a blending filament through out both wings to soften the transition. What a wonderful story the finish piece would then have. I had a finished, framed piece in storage in preparation for an upcoming move. Then the thousand year flood hit Colorado and my piece was soaked, frame ruined. I was heartbroken. The yellow floss ran. I tried washing it but could not get all the yellow stain out. After many months, the pain eased and I decided to reframe it and put the piece’s story on the back. It has history. I still enjoy the piece. Think of all the linen we buy dyed to look old with uneven coloration! ‘T

Hi Erica! Perhaps you may try restitch over the yellowish withe with one floss of white.... I don't know if it will work. Or you can stitch it over with ecru. It will be an angel with ecru wings! You may also try to wash it, but I avoid to wash a wip before it is finished, as the fabric may shrink. If the stitching over doesn't work I would ditch the angel. You have the special memories if you finish it or if you don't. Thank you for your flosstubes and Happy Stitching!

OMG, the look on your face after the first WIP that Wheel spin was priceless! I know I’ve heard Nicola Parkman recommend 103’s and one other brand I can’t recall for stitching on higher counts, so I would wait and order the silks, and I would use the fabric you have, it is beautiful and if a bit of darker flax shows, it will add character. Trust me, when you reach my age it is doubtful you will be stitching on 56 count, so do it now! I think it would be wonderful to finish the Angel since you are so close, but maybe use a variegated off white/ecru or something that matches the faded white color a little better than today’s stark white. You could even coffee tea dye the finished piece. But, I totally understand your dilemma with it, and to be honest, if it were me, I know I would keep it, but not finish it. I wish I was local and could join your stitching party!

Thanks for tuning back in Karen! And thank you for sharing all your thoughts. I have sampled the DMC on the 56 and well it’s OK. I am working on 46 with 100/3 and find the coverage to be full. I had tried dmc and it was a bit too hard for me to easily get the thread through the linen threads but doable. Can’t imagine 56 count based on my experience. I’d probably go with 46 and especially if there is any over one stitching. Also I believe that Katie Strachan just did the huge MFE sampler on 56 count and might be good to reach out to her too. I believe she used Soie surfine.

Wonderful visit! Really enjoyed the walk down the L&L memory lane. As far as your angel piece goes: Why the heck didn't you use this in your round robin?! It would have been a hoot to have Samantha stitch on it for you. LOL. But, seriously, my recommendation is to first give it a long soak (in Ivory dishwashing liquid) and see what happens. If you're still truly unhappy with it afterwards, lovingly return it to storage with a word of thanks for the fond memories. If you want to return to it someday in the future, it will be waiting. If not, there are many, many other pieces calling your name. As for the Ukrainian eggs, don't unpick anything. Don't fuss and mess it up. It looks spectacular as is. Elizabeth Furniss: If you really want to use the 56 count, use the 100.3 silks. If you stick with DMC, switch to 40 count. (Check out Olivia at Pumpkin Hollow Quilts's finish on 40 count Bees Knees by Seraphim Fabrics using DMC. It's gorgeous.) BTW, I literally LOL'd when that demon wheel picked Elizabeth F. then the full-¹coverage montage. Have fun! 😆

Just looked at the Hats website with the linen and silk recommendations for their latest Queen of the May sampler (thinking this is likely to have the most up to date information). They recommend using one strand of DMC only for 40-46 count. 56 count only has silk recommendations. I suspect that the full coverage areas - like the grass and the house - may end up distorted with the DMC floss size. *If* you are going to spend the time investment to stitch this on 56 *and* the $$$ for the silks - I'd also spend the $$$ for really good linen. Nicola Parkman had a really good review of what was available after Nashville market on her flosstube. And talked about one dyer who checked for slubs and imperfections before dyeing - so was really high quality.

I think it actually gives it some great contrast and dimension. From my angle, it looks like there is some shadowing on her wings. You could always use some aging spray just on the wings to bring it all together more? Like if you were to cover the rest of her with some tape and use that aging spray I've seen other people use. It might even it out to make you feel better. But again, I love the dimension it gives to it! Have you considered using 3865 since it's more of an off-white and might be closer to the less bright white you have there? There are also people that are pretty quick at frogging, so you could loan out for frogging of the wings, hahaha! And then have it sent back to restitch? Hard decisions, but it's such a memorable piece that I would hate for you to not finish or throw it away and regret it later because of what it represents. :)
@britches__get__stitches7 ай бұрын
I agree with the use of 103's for 56 count. I like 56 and 64 ct and if I use DMC, it looks just fine! But you'll want to use shorter strands of DMC so that it doesn't shred. I use a beading needle and short strands. I tried longer strands on my recent 64 ct piece and it shredded halfway through the first piece. But when I went shorter, it was great! I don't have pictures of my 56 ct, but my 64ct is on my IG. Let me know and I can send you a pic if you want to see how that looks for a frame of reference.
