Omg! You are reading my mind!! This year I started a project on grey aida and I loved it so much that worked in that project for nearly 5 months straight!! I recently found some old Lori Birmingham kits at a LNS and bought the 4 that they had. I miss the days of actual shading. Sure it could be pain changing floss more often but they were so much richer. I’ve tried to avoid over dyed but recently I was on vacation and bought Autumn Smalls by the Blue Flower and the called for over dyed. My dye lot of glazed carrots is more like a flesh color than a pumpkin color. I also bought a couple of the Tiny Towns and my version of Teal frost is nothing like the model. And I’m halfway through Frosty Tiny Town and I don’t think the over dyed are really doing all that much. Then when you try to just use the cunvetsuon to dmc you have to kind of overthink that too. Or some pieces if you just used DMC they would be just blobs of colors. On the other hand I’m doing a Halloween witch from this years Halloween issue from JCS. It’s all overdyed(as is every other pattern in there) but I only picked 4 of the colors, like her dress and the bats and her hair to use overdyed I had in stash. It does look pretty nice and the colors where I just used DMC look really good. I guess you gotta pick and chose….but wait a minute that’s what I PAY designers to do, right?!?
