Flotek 101-500 out of the box. Bought them to port. Not a good head out of the box at all.

I have some Ford 180cc heads. It looks like you lucked about with the sbc heads in comparison, lol. On my ford heads he seats were cut in pretty deep also and have a big ridge around the valve, too. The short turn is pretty much non-existent. The core shift on mine was quite a bit worse also. I have a video on them if you want to see it.

I bought a pair of these heads assembled, every intake valve leaked by, some of the exhaust valves leak by, and the valve stems had scoring from assembly.

Yessir. That is why I buy everything bare. Leaking is very common with even some of the higher end heads as well.

I bought these to go on my 383 I was building. I’ve had nothing but problems. First I couldn’t get the intake in the valley side to seal I thought it was my intake so I bought a new one then that didn’t work sent it back and Got a replacement still didn’t fix it so I figured I did something wrong so I just tore it apart and on top of the intake not seating right the valves leaked on the tip and they all leaks oil on the studs that go in to the intake runners summit said they can’t do anything because I installed them and ran it

Welcome! Yessir, lots of choices in cylinder heads. If you could get by with a 200cc runner, you should consider the cheap amazon/ebay sub $200 bare heads. They are Dart pro1 copies and are good out of the box. Would certainly recommend buying them bare and buying your own hardware for them...at least you would know what was in them. I have bought/ported several pairs of them and they are fantastic heads for the low bucks.

Yup this is exactly what we see with these heads and other cheap heads. We've also seen the guides and seats come loose. Me personally I don't like them because to get them to flow well and last you have to put time and money into them so where's the savings

What do you mean when you say 100% bowl cut? The bowl can’t be the same size as the valve, there wouldn’t be anything for the valve to seal to. I’m guessing this must be a terminology difference? Bowl cut % is of the overall valve diameter, ie 2.00 x .90= 1.800” etc. I’m just curious is all, good video thanks for sharing. JD

I'm referring to the area basically between each wall under the throat that creates the venturi effect as it transitions into the throat. I measure it at the top of the valve guide. Ill do a video on it to explain better what I mean when I get a chance. Yes I believe that it may be a terminology difference.

Unless you are super serious gogo fast racer, start off with a set of AFR HEADS AND SPEND THE ADDITIONAL $1000.00 BUCKS! RACE READY OUT OF THE BOX! IF YOU WANT TO go low dollar, excellent performance, well built.... I'm convinced a set of modified vortecs are a best way to go on a budget! Yes, they will add 80 pounds to your motor compared to aluminum...for $900.00 on ebay you get a set, modified for both intakes, screw in studs, Stainless valves, machined for bigger springs, machined for rod guides, 202 and 160 valves, brand new heads!! And they come ready for .550 valve lift capability $900 free shipping, excellent flow and 185cc runners

is there still such a process as EXTRUDE HONING where they forced a sandy abrasive sludge like mixture thru the heads to enlarge and smooth all the ports? it seemed like a good process butr maybe it was extremely expensive and only companies doin it went broke? i assume it would wreck any current valve jobs and all seat would have to be recut, adding more costs. mightve been cheaper just to buy great heads in first place
@jport9919
@jport9919 3 жыл бұрын
I'm certainly not an expert on extrude honing, but I think its usually reserved for things that cannot be easily ported by hand. I think if you search this site you will probably find several videos of folks doing extrude honing on EFI upper intake manifold runners (ford 5.0 EFI for example). Could also be used in race classes in which porting is not allowed and you wanted to do it on the down low. In this case and on these heads its way easier and cost effective to just hand port.

I bet they do that so they can cnc port them. (Or you can port them) I know their cnc flotek 220s that I have started off as the 200cc. I would rather have some meat to port the shrouded area then to run as cast.

The 200cc floteks are a completely different port and a good design/good head. They look like a copy of the RHS 200. I did the bowls/throats/short turns on a set of FT 200's few months ago and they really wake up with just a little work.

I'm doing the same thing as you. Same heads arp bolts no comp cams in stock..got a summit cam that a bit big..2500 to 6000 rpm. Don't plan on spinning past 5500. I'm nervous as hell about making sure all the parts aresuppose to with our old 289. And installing with my mobile mechanic. I'm gonna restore original crank and home cilinders and new rings or if i have to bore the cilinders and get new oversized pistons i maybe gonna stroker IT because in a stroker kit everything is allready in this kit pistons with rings ,new rods and crank with all bearings . and you have more CC And more power. If i have questions ivask Them at. VMF Mustang forum (they know alot of these engines) Joint is. My name. Is. christof 1966 coupe on this forum. I just hope it's not rocket science, putting the new heads on ,cam and getting the valves adjusted properly before the critical start and cam break in.. I've been watching videos and studying the procedures. So I can keep an eye on my mobile mechanic friend.and to help him with the work.. Just nervous about the whole thing after spending about $2200 in parts . Thanks for the tip.

If you cut your bowls to 100% how would the valve seal? The valves would pull through the bowl... You must be referring to something else??? There are calculators/formulas for bowl cut percentages, if you go too far you risk having the valve seat crack or fall out. I'm lost on the 100% bowl cut!
@jport9919
@jport9919 2 жыл бұрын
Yeah man, it gets confused quite a bit. The area directly under the valve seat is the throat area. You want the throat to be generally no more that 91.5% on a street head. The area under the throat is the bowl, which I put at 100-105% depending on a few different factors. With the throat being smaller than the bowl, it creates a venturi effect flowing into the chamber and regains some velocity. The idea behind enlarging the bowl is to slow the velocity down around the short side radius of the port to keep it attached to the floor. I have been asked this a few times. I probably just need to do a quick vid on it.

This is true for the mostpart, but there are quite a few heads out there for for far less money than these that are waaaayyy better out of the box. The ultra cheap ebay/amazon 200ish cc dart pro 1 copies absolutely cannot be beat in terms of value right now. They are about $200 less than these per pair.
