Seeing that superb rig makes me wanna spill the beans on one of mine. 1-2oz ball sinker with a white hair flie on a 3 way. More like a drop shot but you want the fly to have a 12" leader off the main line. Especially for land based inlet/heavy current. You just rip it up after letting it roll for a second. Sometimes I tie them on 1/8oz jigheads if its really ripping but that rig is KILLER for heavy current on a smaller surf rod so you can really launch it. The gulp bucktail and teaser is our go to vertical, but is too buoyant for certain current rip situations and will not cast far enough, although it looks like you were not dealing with much current at the time of this segment!

Sounds good! this was just before during and after high tide so the current was changing and manageable. when it's mid ebb or mid flood tide the current really rips out there. you have to go with heavier bucktails and I lost a bunch of bucktails in the rocks

The one you measured while in the net was 18 1/2. Your tape measure went over the net so it wasn't an accurate measurement.... probably a short.

keep your line slack they are escape predators man! i must have lost 10% of the fluke I caught this year at my kayak. i'm up at the Shrewsbury river and got some nice keepers.

yeah the first one escaped after he bumped the rocks , the second one I just wasn't quick enough with the net. next time I have an extendable net...they won't get away!

Next time try to keep their heads in the water they won’t spit the hook as easy and you have to measure them with their mouth closed.
