Marsh Man Masson has done a few flounder-gigging trips during his fishing career, but always on foot while walking through shallows carrying Coleman lanterns. That's the old-school way of doing it, according to subscriber Jeremy Guidry.
He and his lifelong buddy Dustin Breland cover much more water and encounter many more flatfish by cruising the shallows in flat-bottomed aluminum boats pulled by trolling motors. They also use generators to power halogen lights that penetrate crystal-clear waters and illuminate massive flounder that place a little too much confidence in their camouflage.
When Marsh Man was invited by Guidry on a trip, he didn't hesitate for a second in accepting. The pair waited until conditions were right, and then headed out with Breland on his boat.
The night started slowly, but before long, the flounder hunters were sticking flatfish and more, and along the way, they captured some of the most amazing flounder-gigging footage you'll ever see.

More success if you use lights below the surface. Obviously these lights shown are not capable of being used underwater doing satisfactory job, but a lot of improvements can be made.

Wow! This brings back many memories of flounder gigging with my Dad and Uncles on the beach at Grand Isle! I’ll never forget the trip when I was finally big enough to actually gig my first flounder! What a rush that was! Thanks for the reminder of such great memories, Todd!

Is the Rigolets bridge a good area to fish for flounder? I only hear about people gigging around here never fishing for them.
@jeremyguidry7980
@jeremyguidry7980 6 жыл бұрын
@@PeteCrutchfield it's really hard to say....when the flounder are in they can be caught all around the rigolets. But you can also fish all day and not get a bite either. Just have to hit the banks and give it a try.

Jeremy you need to try underwater LED lights. Much brighter without glare on the surface and can run all night on a 12v battery.

I don't think so. Flounder are much more cyclical than many other fish. The catch has been terrible in the last two or three years, but anglers are bumping into a bunch more of them this fall.

Fooling a fish with something it thinks is food, hooking it in the mouth, fighting it with state-of-the-art gear and throwing it in a cooler = honorable. Piercing it with a gaff and throwing it in a cooler = disgraceful. Got it. At least you'll have something to talk about at the next PETA meeting.

Go weld up some real gigs with 5/16 stainless all thread. 2 or 3 prong then grind the sharp. We have to step on our fish to get them off of the gig! Never seen a gig where the fish slides over the whole handle like that.

Todd, only suggestion for those guys is use underwater lights. Less glare on the surface of the water and using LED lights are super bright and can run on a 12v battery. That's what we use and gig some real doormats up to 7 lbs.
