Love this video, there's some old-school kakie here, especially 14:10 - 15:00. I saw Higaonna Sensei demo this years ago, not in recent years though. I love doing this to my little girl during playfighting, and when I showed this video to her today she suddenly commented that she did this to someone during free-sparring in her BJJ class and brought an older girl down. which is great, for she's exceeded me, since in all my years I've only managed to lock somebody's arms thus, during irikumi but not manage to throw or take anybody down - all two times I switched to Uraken strike instead before breaking off. This technique actually depends on the opponent's instinctive response, and the first time I did this，I was a young and new Sandan, it was an accident, my right hand grabbed his right hand and pulled it down, he instinctively punched into the exposed jodan area and I grabbed his left hand with mine, then training kicked in and I locked his elbow/arms like during practice....and my right hand delivered the Uraken....the second time,years later was kinda intended, now that I knew how an opponent could be lured into this technique - again I went for Uraken instead of throw.

Well done to your daughter - we're proud of her (even though she's not ours!) Good martial principles occur in all good arts, especially if one has an intuitive grasp of body mechanics and quick answers to every technique. It sounds like she is well on her way! Sometimes there is serendipity on the mat and a technique just arrives...and sometimes it is a fluke 🤣

Thank you, Sensei! Kakie teaches practitioners to gain a situational awareness of their opponent that's often invisible to the eye. It also facilitates an understanding of their own body mechanics-all of this in a semi-controlled manner while still providing some element of uncertainty. I agree that this type of training is the bridge between kumite/randori and kata/bunkai. In many ways, I think that kakie can stand on its own merit just as well as any other type of training, and perhaps is deserving of being considered as one of the primary pillars of training. The training value in this video is too much to take in at once and I know I will be rewatching this (and the previous Flow Drill) video again and again. And to Sensei Zoe, thanks for the entertaining bits of humour and sarcasm scattered throughout. 😁

Ah, always a pleasure, our Sirius! Apologies for the late response for one of our very best and oldest subscribers - shame on me! It is maybe to kakie's benefit that it is only taught by seriously authentic dojos - it requires a serious depth of knowledge to be utilised effectively, otherwise it just ends up being a shoulder conditioning exercise between swole bros. In Sensei Chinen's _Hapo_ kakie is treated as its own subject worthy of exploration - it is a pity that this isn't more universally accepted across other dojos. If I ever have to do another thesis again, I think kakie would make a fine subject for it. As always, we are delighted by your lovely comments, and support for our little channel :) - Zoe

I took goju ryu for Manny year in my adolescent years. Just shy of a black belt then work and life and a new family took me over. After seeing the first 5 seconds of the push pull drill it is all coming back.. just found these videos today, thanks for the refresher and a few new variations of some things. I often recommend The Way of Kata to people who are serious about their karate and need a good overview of the rules or guidelines of bunkai. And unlike most karate books, it is clearly written and enjoyable - some of them are so dry and boring 😪 Always stomp the groin 💪
