Many many years ago I brought my boys , to shihan Sid snarr's dojo in haileybury ont. And my oldest boy was one of his stellar star pupils who not only attended the kids class but also right afterwards attended the adults class and towards the end of his training Jason attended a dojo in Niagara falls where the instructor there fell in love with Jason's abilities and the one Kata he did for pre class warm up was what was known to us as the sanctioned breathing Kata which is very similar to what you have shown here, and I will say this and that doing this Kata really does work every muscle in the body and is one that requires total focus, only thing I've ever said to the boys while training and doing katas is did it feel right and how do you feel with each movement which has a significance, I never had to push them to the training but made them think first about why they wanted to train and what was the best way or reason to use this for , but anyhow love the video brought back many memories keep up the good work, and just a silly question but do you know how many variations of this Kata are there that you know of ?

Kiai is younger than the word karate. It was something used to build team spirit at schools and universities. And has evolved into sporting shouts today. Our dojo only have children kiai (application is a bite, and we show the bite).

Excellent video. Of course, I expect nothing less….what an excellent workout doing all the kata back to back is. As one of my karate mentors likes to say regarding the practice of kata:“first, motion study, then, FULL POWER”. Or, as I now say, “one for show, and one for GO!”;). Thank you again for all you share with us.

Love the video, so far. But as soon as Jaeger, Sensei mentioned the “ bouncing phone”, an idea occurred to me ( one I’m sure you’ve thought of already, yourselves;). That idea is to sow a pocket inside a gi or two , to hold the phone ( or whatever) specifically for these videos. Just a thought. You could even make a pockets that closes/seals ( for less bouncing;)- Anyway- back to the video, and thank you for it in advance! Take care!

Thanks so much Sensei! Being new to Goju Ryu, this gave me a good overview and a lot of appreciation for the discipline that goes into the skill set. Much appreciated!

For tokui-gata, mine would be shisochin perhaps as I'm a pacifist and there are no fists (sorry for the pun) or seiken-zuki, to be more precise. And when I'm lazy for kicking due to my knees, then seiyunchin is good still to work on legs. But every kata has its own flavour so jedem das seine. :)

I'm a boxer. I also do kick boxing training but I compete in boxing. I'm a pretty good boxer but a moderate kickboxer. I've also done freestyle wrestling for a few months. I want to learn karate. If I start now, how long is it gonna take me to reach black belt level?

Goju ryu is not a sport karate, you and i know that! Especially for points non contact etc. Now, full contact kyoshin style yes, much more suited to goju, if your going to compete.

Superb video. As always Sir! Colossal respect Sir, in my view there are no "basics". There are only vital fundamentals. If you take the, often wrongly mocked, Kihon Kata of Wado ( and forgive the treason I was Wado 15 years!) for example; with the bunkai and then oyo of these you have a perfect personal protection system that will last a lifetime; quickly learned , easily retained and will function under the realty stress of the adrenaline dump. My view is that advanced Karate is dong the "basics" ie fundamentals very well! But again Sir, superb video as always!
