In this video, I continue with my flow-hive extraction process that was previously thwarted due to a large honey bee beard that prevented me from tilting.
This video starts on July 9th and ends on July 19th so you can see how quickly the bees re-fill the flow hive frames.
I also walk you through my process for not using queen excluders by making sure there is a honey-bridge between the brood box and Flow-Super.
How hot do honey bees get when they are fanning a hot hive?

@FrederickDunn

Will do, and as for bees living longer, unless marked and tracked, that would be a challenge. Population alone wouldn't be strong enough evidence. So, newly hatching workers would have to be marked with a distinctive color and then see how long those colors continue in the hive before completely disappearing.

@@FrederickDunn Here in Oz we changed to metric when I was a kid in 1975. But feet and inches are often a convenient measure so I still use those. Temp is more difficult to convert and then you have your own US gallons which are different from the Imperial gallons we used to use. When you get used to metric it is sooo much easier to use. Here's a farmer's example...how much water (in gallons) falls on a square yard when you get an inch of rain? Bonus question...how much would that water weigh in pounds? (Feel free to use a calculator). In metric an inch is about 25 millimeters and a yard is a few inches smaller than a meter. So how much water falls on a square meter after 25mm of rain? 25 liters. How much does it weigh? 25 kilograms. :-)

Fred, I put flow frames on two of my hives recently for the first time. To my dismay, I observed three bees completely inside three of the cells not moving. Not moving for a long time. All the other bees around them were busy working. My initial conclusion was that these bees had died while working. The next day I came back to find each of these ‘dead bees’ were gone. Instead of bees working themselves to death preparing these cells, is it possible worker bees take a nap periodically inside the cells they have been working?
@FrederickDunn
@FrederickDunn 4 жыл бұрын
Hi Larry, you have just witnessed members of the Wax--Workers Union taking breaks at length while appearing to be working from the cell entrance. It's most often the case that they are napping. It's extremely rare, unless it's winter, for workers that are near death to insert themselves in cells. In winter, starving bees will be found clustered in cells trying to stay warm and licking every little bit of honey.

Great video again!! While queens tend to not cross the "honey barrier" going up, what about laterally through a brood box? If there are several frames with brood toward one side, but one side has a frame (or two) chock full of honey, will the queen go past that hone to lay in other frames there? Or, should we move those honey frames out toward the side and insert the "empty" frames interior, next/closer to the brood frames?
@FrederickDunn
@FrederickDunn 4 жыл бұрын
That's a great question! The brood frames are where the queen continues to lay in a radius of cells... IF she runs out of available cells, she wanders around other frames in the same box. If she meets a solid frame of honey before finding open cells, she tends to go up and search lower cells in the frames directly above the current brood frames. This is why it's so important to leave her with enough room for brood and the workers plenty of room for resource storage above. As a colony can become honeybound during a strong nectar flow, the queen may wander to any cell on any frame and in any box. The nurse bees tend to follow her around and will often ingest eggs that area placed in cells too far from the brood frames. It's somewhat predictable, but beekeepers should be aware that she "could" lay eggs in the flow-super as her options diminish. We have to keep up with the flow-supers so the bees have a place for nectar storage. In the five years I've had the flow-supers without queen excluders, I've had one queen lay in the mechanized frames and that's because I also left them on through winter to see if she actually would do that.

Hi Fred, great video. I was wondering whether you use Vivaldi boards in the winter for your hives. I live in the UK and thinking of making one for somewhere to put food and using it in combination with burlap to wick up moisture. Especially as there is quite a lot of rain over here and lots of moisture in my hive and over the flow frames. Cheers
@FrederickDunn
@FrederickDunn 4 жыл бұрын
Actually I don't, as Vivaldi boards vent through the top, even though absorbant materials are placed inside them as insulation. I've found, where I reside, that the bees keep their top interior area warm and dry through winter unless there is venting that introduces cold air and of course an exit for their hard earned warmth. Insulation, without venting would be extremely valuable in winter... they can vent off excess moisture through the enrance and bottom just fine, as they do in the wild. Through the years, we've learned from feral colonies of honey bees, that they avoid top entrances and spaces with top vents or air leaks that they cannot repair. I'll mention this on Friday.

Will the bees stop filling frame #6 & #7 when they notice that #2, #3, #4, & #5 are empty in the middle? Or is a subset of the colony specifically delegated to fill each frame?
@FrederickDunn
@FrederickDunn 4 жыл бұрын
That is a great question. Yes, they tend to stop filling the outter frames/cells, after those center frames have been drained. Once the center frames are filling again, they also resume the oustide frames. They also sometimes redistribute the honey/nectar from one cell to another as they consolidate the honey.

But now I'd like to harvest some honey. Can I pull the first super off and drop the 2nd supers down on the brood box? Beautiful video there. I have a question, and maybe a suggestion for a future experiment since you enjoy the science of bee behavior so much. I've heard you mention many times how the bees are very good at regulating the temps in their hive by fanning and moving the air around. And they manage to keep the temp somewhere between 94-97 if I recall correctly. If this is the case, then why are the better combs buckling without wire support? How hot does a better comb frame need to get before it buckles? Have you used any internal thermometers to measure the high and low temps within the hive in varying locations on the hottest of days?
@FrederickDunn
@FrederickDunn 4 жыл бұрын
Hi Shay, the 94-97 degree F parameter is assigned to the brood frame specifically, it may be hotter up in the honey super(s)... Better Comb is much like brand new bees wax and is delicate and because it's inserted in a frame, until the bees finish waxing it to the frame, it's prone to sagging or bowing particularly in the deep frames. Going forward, I'm going to recommend the wire reinforcement on all deep bettercomb installs. With full hives of bees, they do regulate the temps very well and I've not encountered bettercomb failures. BUT, if an expansion box is placed and the bees are insuficient in numbers, temps can get away from them in particular climated where high temps are sustained for many days to weeks. Even natural bees wax can fail under those conditions. The makes of bettercomb state that it has a higher melting temp than bees wax, that may be the case, but bending and deforming are technically not considered "melting" and it still can cause alignment problems in the hive. I don't currently have plans to install thermal sensors inside hives, though that could be useful information in my opinion, particularly in winter here.
@omarualpacafarm
@omarualpacafarm 4 жыл бұрын
A couple of questions. I notice the wood on the flow super is wood coloured. Did you leave this one natural like you did with the cedar flow 2 out of the box video or did you put a clear finish on it? Also how is the cedar natural finish doing? I notice you put a strap on the roof and didn’t use the screw on the side of the roof to tighten to the flow frame. Have you had problems with the roof blowing off? My husband thinks that will be a problem with ours. Loved the thermal imaging. So interesting. Thanks for yet another great video.
@FrederickDunn
@FrederickDunn 4 жыл бұрын
The featured flowhive in this video has a clear finish on it.. Helmsman's Marine Spar Varnish. I like the look of th wood. As for the cedar unfinished hives, they are doing well, though I do finish the roof system. As for strapping the hives, That's because the roof screws don't keep the entire hive from blowing over, and I strap the hives together as a second layer of protection against animals that can topple a hive. The roof blowing off isn't an issue, it's about overall stability. Thanks for watching!

Hi Fred, thanks for the great video! In the video it did not seem that the medium frames were that full of honey. Will they continue filling these frames before producing in the super? Thanks!
@FrederickDunn
@FrederickDunn 4 жыл бұрын
Good eye Mike! In the medium super that will be used as the "honey-bridge" it's not important for it to be full of honey, but at least started... with nectar in most of the cells as that defines those cells for honey storage even when partially filled. If I waited for the frames to be full and capped, they would already be putting nectar down in the lower frames and on their way to being honey-bound. So, it's my practice to see that there is no brood work going on in the medium super just beneath the flow-super. If there is, then another medium super is installed before the flow-super. Great question! Thanks :)

Fred - you inspected a hive an found no brood in the top deep. What if I've got brood in the top deep? Can I move that to the bottom and pull up frames of honey to create a full deep to discourage the queen from moving up to the honey super? I'm running two deeps for brood and resources, with the goal of medium honey supers above that. My package of sakatraz bees have filled the 2 deeps, but put a few frames of scattered brood in the top deep? Also, what's your opinion about moving honey frames to the outside of both of the deeps for winter storage for the bees to concentrate the brood in the middle?
@FrederickDunn
@FrederickDunn 4 жыл бұрын
IF the medium super has some brood in it, I add another medium for them to work honey stores in, if that's honey-only, then good to go with the flow-super. If you want to continue with the flow-super and have some brood in that upper box, then a queen excluder should be used.

The best method I've found for cleaning them so far is to power wash them with hot water, it melts out the propolis and wax so the bees can begin again. You need water temps at or above 149 degrees F. Do not let the water temp rise above 160 deg. F. It's the best way I know of. If you don't have a temp controlled power washer, then you can make a hot-bath for the frames and just dip them.

Hi Dan, in colder climates, we need more honey for the bees and the flow-supers are pulled off for winter. So we have the single deep box, then a medium super full of honey, and then the flow-super during strong nectar flows. This practice also allows me to keep the system without queen excluders as the queen doesn't generally cross over the honey-bridge.

This might be a dumb question as I have no idea about bees at all but love the videos but would it not cause a problem having so many different hives near eachother??
@FrederickDunn
@FrederickDunn 4 жыл бұрын
The farther they are apart they are, the better they tend to do... one of the biggest issues is if the hives are close to one another and appear similar. Using distinctive colors or physical design changes can help individual foragers find their way home to the correct hive. Solid rows of hives that are configured the same and have the same color are prone to bee-drift and spread of disease or parasites when bees land and enter the incorrect hive.

@@FrederickDunn yeah, I just find it odd and a bit humourous. The same folk who want it "natural" and no plastic in their hive use a super that is made of plastic. (Note: I am not anti flow hive or even anti foundationless, even though I personally don't do either. I'm also not saying that everyone who uses a flow hive or foundationless are this way...its just an interesting set of beekeepers. I just find the contradiction funny. )

If I got my bees before september would I bee okay without feeding. I live in ca Bay Area no snow in winter. I want to leave half a medium super for them in winter. I have a flow hybrid ready for bees. I’m also thinking of joining a beekeeping club that will supply me with a swarm if caught. But I’m not shure if there are lots of swarms nearby. Pls share your thoughts and continue makeing these amazing videos Ps : would love a live video later this week👍

Japanese bees kill hornets by heating them up creating a ball cause they can take more heat then the hornet can. I just wondered ... this heat tolerance was this achieved early down in the genetic tree of bees? are european bees same as japanese in this regard? ( it was you running around with a FLIR that made me wonder )
@FrederickDunn
@FrederickDunn 3 жыл бұрын
That only works when they can do that heat-ball on the hornet scouts. If the scouts get away and come back with other nest members, the bees are not successful in their defense. Other bee species do not have that capability when it comes to large hornets.

You have to get a clone of the fast growing paulownia tree the one from seed aren’t as fast growing, the wood is very durable super light very bouyant, a great money maker for anyone with land, good sun and plenty of water, it’s used in engineered timber processing for plywood planks beams surfboards furniture the list is endless, they’re invasive if the roots are cut little saplings pop up averywhere but make a magnificent specimen tree for gardens very beautiful deciduous tree the bees love the flowers too 👍

Hey Fredrick there are a lot of topics I’m concerned about in this video of why vegans don’t eat honey. I was wondering if you could address them. They don’t cite their sources, so I have my doubts about their credibility, and knowing you’ve known about this topic way for a long time I figured it might give you a bit of content for your videos, answer some concerns, and still bee on topic. Here’s the video link: kzbin.info/www/bejne/mZ2wf6qVi7RkrtE

Hi Mood Swing! You're trying to get me into trouble with vegans! (';')... I've been confronted by vegan reps before and I've found that 99% of the time, they don't have questions for me, just accusations and an intellectual wall that prevents any informed discussion. BUT, I'll say that I have zero interest in winning over any dedicated vegan enthusiast. I watched that video, and par for trhe course, they weave many truths in with misinformation. They show feral honey bees in a tree and claim "honey bees displace wild bees" odd, but expected. They also, as anyone with an agenda does, show the worst examples of beekeepign and beekeepers to shock viewers and win their minds through emotion. They lump all beekeepers together as profit first, bee killers, inseminators, and abusers of the slaves known as honey bees. Notice that they don't interview any beekeepers, there is a lack of balance. I actually agree with some of what is presented as just plain bad-business. But then there are the glaring misrepresentations that all beekeepers rob their honey bees to resource poverty and then dump in sugar syrup, or kill them off completely each and every year so they don't have to feed them through winter? It's like the flow-hive haters - and that's ok, use whatever hive they want to, but they don't discuss it at all - which keeps them safe in their self-constructed system of misinformation. That youtube also showed flies on flowers and stated that "honey bees compete with native bees"... ok, so they depend heavily on uninformed viewers. Wait.. (';').... ( ';') what am I doing? Stepping down from my soap box in the town square... I'm here for backyard beekeepers and those who seek information about honey bees. Not here to unhorse someone who has chosen a solid path of avoiding animal produced nutrition. Bees are animals, they produce honey, vegans don't eat animal products. BUT... as I head to my cappuccino machine... I leave you with this - worldwide, there are over 20 thousand species of bees - they work all day long flying from flower to flower, pollinating and gleaning nectar for their young - therefore, each and every flowering plant - and the fruit produced by it, is a direct product of animal work. : ) see what I did there?

Frederick Dunn I thought that may be the case, but I make a habit to try to find out for sure since I do not know about industry practices, just more backyard keepers. Honestly a lot of it did sound fishy and even used a clip where I believe one was only killing a queen because she wasn’t producing enough for the colony to survive. Thank you for the help I really appreciate it!
