Flowblade Beginners Tutorial: Basic Video Editing. Using Proxy Clips.

How to edit video clips and resolve the issue of sticking or jerky (lag) playback by using proxy clips.
Flowblade Movie Editor is a free and open-source video editing software for Linux.
Flowblade employs a film-style insert editing model as workflow with similar design approach as Avid. In insert editing clips are generally placed tightly after other clips when they are inserted on the Timeline. Edits are fine tuned by trimming in and out points of clips or by cutting and deleting parts of clips.
Flowblade's builds most of its functionality using media framework MLT. Other MLT video editors are KDEnlive and Shotcut.
Other used libraries include Frei0r effects and LADSPA. Flowblade supports all of the formats supported by FFmpeg or libav (such as QuickTime, AVI, WMV, MPEG, and Flash Video, among others), and also supports 4:3 and 16:9 aspect ratios for both PAL, NTSC and various HD standards, including HDV and AVCHD.
• Editing with 4 move tools, 3 trim tools, 4 methods to add clips on the Timeline and drag'n'drop functionality. Max.9 combined video and audio tracks available.
• Image compositing with 6 compositors and mix, zoom, move and rotate animations capability.
• Image and audio filtering with 50+ image filters and 30+ audio filters.
• Supported editable media types include most common video and audio formats, depending on installed MLT/FFMPEG codecs, bitmap and vector graphics and numbered frame sequences.
• Built-in title tool.
• G'MIC effects tool
• Unlimited keyframing for animatable clip attributes.
• Output encoding can done to most common video and audio formats

Very useful, thanks! I couldn't figure out that RENDER was to save out the Project to a flat, sequential MP4 video file- I was thinking like the GIMP/PhotoShop where you use EXPORT AS. So ..thanks! Stinks that we have to increase / amplify audio across entire clip only by 200pct.. I need louder..maybe I can keep loading in the video, amplify, render and repeat? Keep up the great work.

If you move the track ends to the placed marker, is it possible to let the end snap to the marker? Like with pressing shift while moving the end?

I do wish someone would approach these tutorials as though you have never seen, or heard of video editing. My son has seen in his infinite wisdom to give me a "SIMPLE" operating system! Linux is not a simple system to a 70 year old! SO can you make a tutorial that the elderly, or a preschooler can can understand.

Seems I need a faster notebook. During viewing the video, I clicked on a video to make a proxy from it. This needs now 4 hours on a Celeron N3150. (7 GB HD from 2 hours)

I just rendered my video, and it came out all wrong. The clips were cut at the wrong times, turning it into a jumbled mess. It played fine in the preview but after rendering, no. Halp?

Hey how close is flowblade to after effects? Can it track someone's face for example and apply effects over time? I'm looking to be able to do this aside from After Effects as performed by Andrew Kramer in his demon face warp tutorial?

You want a compositor rather than a video editor. Blender (as has already been suggested) and Natron are two options.

Kdenlive as well does some compositing and rotoscoping, but so does flowblade, but, i'm not sure how well it works.
