hey, I'm interested in using an m14 flow drill bit in my battery drill which has an rpm of 2000 to try and get through copper pipe. do you think it's possible? i'm trying to build some brewing equipment and want to knock in branches to the larger diameter pipe and this looks like the most effective way for my application.

No.You need a powerful, corded drill press.

I understand that friction drilling requires a fair amount of pressure to create heat. Can they be used with a hand drill?

Hi Hugo, you are correct the axial force is just too much to push it through the material by hand. You can drill a pilot hole with a normal spiral drill first, this will reduce the force required. You would still need a hand drill with approx 2000RPM and 1.3KW which are hard to find. Thanks for asking though!

@@Flowdrill I'll have to look into it. I have some shipping containers for car storage. I came to the conclusion that I was only using half the containers so I put a modified car hoise into one of them so I could fit two cars in. There are 60 attachments to the container which took for ever. I need to do 5 containers. Using a friction drill I could do them in no time. I'll have to look into it.

@@hugostiglitz6914 if you would like to chat to a local Flowdrill contact just about how it could work, let me know which country you are in and I can drop you a number and an email. It sounds like a nice application, good luck with the project.

Hi Hugo, i am desperatelly looking for an answer from a person who definitely knows about friction drilling. The question is: Drill Press. Its a 550W 2600rpm max tool. Is it worth a try (or even does it works with it) or better not bother with it. I read your previous comment about the pilot hole (hand drill question) but i am not sure about my drillpress neither.

@@dekurvajo Sorry for the delay Attila, I would not recommend attempting to friction drill with a 0.55KW drill press, if you can have access to 1.0KW minimum then you have a good opportunity to do M6 in 2mm steel. For thicker material or bigger diameter, you will need more power. An RPM around 2600 is more than enough though.
