Flower Bed MAKEOVER With Retaining Wall and Irrigation Drip System

The main thing that has been lacking with my yard is a nice flower bed. This week we finally had a few days of nice weather so we got a start. We used a sod cutter to remove the grass and to dig out the border for the flower bed. Once we got all the concrete blocks set, it was time to install the drip irrigation system. Since we already had spray heads in there, it was fairly easy. Stay tuned for part 2 when we install the rock / mulch and plant all the shrubs and trees.

Oh meant to say that the wall turned out super amazing and really changed the look of the house. When you mentioned red maple my first thought was, 'will it clash with the red bricks?' then, 'is that too close to the house for a tree?' Can you grow Esperanza’s where you live? The yellow blooms would be a nice contrast & the size is easily managed. Can’t wait to see the next video of this project.

Looks great! If you're still wondering which tree to plant on the end, I would suggest a 'Slender Hinoki Cypress' tree. It grows to less than 12' and 2' wide. It has a kind of whimsical look. The dark green would stand out from the red brick front unlike a Japanese maple and those can get quite a spreading root system. Just a thought.

Mulch always and also plant ground covers because within 3-5 years you won’t need to use mulch in most of those areas again because the ground covers will cover enough.
@stevennguyen4993

As someone who just spent so much time pulling out overgrown spireas and all of the landscape fabric they were attached to, I am personally not a fan of landscape fabric. Not only does it get heavy with years of mulching with weeds and roots trying to grow over through it, but it's also difficult to add plants to landscapes (or replace them) when these covers are used. Other than shrubs, I wouldn't bother growing herbaceous perennials in them. Annuals are also out the window for the most part. But that's the gardener side of me. On another note, this is an inspiring job done. It's surprising how a job like this can elevate the face of the home.

Best part of the video IMO is you saying you're not that good at setting a level first row of blocks but then it all comes together perfectly. I've done a couple of similar projects on my property and I used the same method: try your best with the base layer, but then just hit the blocks with a deadblow hammer until they're level, checking like 100 times per block just to make sure. It's really comforting to know that I'm not alone. Gives me a lot of confidence.

Turned out nice! Always start your retaining walls at the lowest end. As a landscape installation contractor for almost 30 years, I would not put dirt up against house. Brick and concrete will soak up water too.

I have one small flower bed against the house, by the front door. It's 2 steps down from the house. The rest is all gravel, zero lawn against the house, no allowances for termites or water damage.

Hi Brian,you & Justin did an amazing job.A Japanese maple would be beautiful.I have rock in my flower beds because of wind & leaves blowing but you do what your family likes.I learned a lot by watching this.👏🏻😊👍🏻

Hi Linda 😊👋👋 Thanks so much as always! Yeah that’s definitely a good reason to have rock still not sure what I’m going to settle on though! Lol

That is a huge undertaking. Lots of hard work. I did mine 20+ years ago when I was a lot younger. You are lucky to have help, I did mine by myself. In my younger years when I was in shape. But round is a shape too, so that is me today. Good video. Nice to see a variation in your work. Keep up the great work. Tim.

It looks really great and I hope that if and when I buy a house/home, I will do the same thing because it just looks so beautiful and unique. I really like how it separates things/plants. Can’t wait to see what you do with the rest of it!

Looks great Brian! Really gives the yard some more curb appeal and can't wait to see what gets planted! You also gave me some ideas on what to do with my front yard!
