How long in advance can you make this type of lei?

The fresher the better, always, but this flower will last a few days so you could pick and make it and store it in the refrigerator, to present the next day. I don't recommend waiting longer than that.

It depends on the flower. This bougainvillea lei can last a few days, but for the best result, collect and make it the same day for giving by the next day latest. The fresher the better. To keep it fresh use a slender plastic bag like those used for newspapers or a gallon ziplock. Place the lei in the open bag. Secure the end or a portion of the string and push away the blossoms, close up the opening while holding the string of the lei, and blow air in the bag (like filling up a balloon). This will create an air cushion around the lei. Secure the end with a rubber band and keep it in the refrigerator.
