ABSOLUTELY STUNNING but...how wasteful. I wonder how much it cost and the value of human labour that could have been used to, say, PLANT TREES instead. REALLY GORGEOUS to watch!

Well it brings hundres of thousands of visitors, make the city known in the world for this and thus increasing wealth thus increasing investments in improving the city and it's environmental impact! You could see it that way. Plus, as mentioned above, culture is never wasted money!
