Hi Flower Friends! It's Nicole from Flower Hill Farm- I am dreaming about spring bulbs! Today I'm chatting about a common question I see in the flower farming community. Are tulips worth growing? So I compare what an investment in tulips and daffodils look like and what kind of profit you can expect to see over the years. Of course, these numbers will depend on your location and your market. This is just my experience buying and selling these stems! There are certain varieties of tulips that are known to perennialize better than others.

Apparently in my haste, I added $50 instead of $60 to each total investment so they are $10 off of what they should be! Thanks to my amazingly smart followers for letting me know! It doesn't change the end result much at all.

I love daffodils! Years ago, when I got divorced and was very sad, I started buying small bunches of daffodils to put in a vase by my bed. I would wake up to their happy faces and the day would be better. This is my first year planting bulbs lasagna. I planted Foxtrot tulips, Tahiti double and Delnashaugh Daffodils and some Crocus. Sadly, a lot of varieties are not recommended for my area (10b). However, if it goes well, I want to do a whole corner of my patio with different types/sizes of terra cotta and waves of daffodils and tulips.

I paid $40 for 200ish for tulips 🌷 ( they were clearanced 30-50% off) I wanted daffodils, but I couldn't find any on clearanced. However, I will def invest in daffodils next year. I am putting money aside for them & ordering them early for 2022. The tulips from this year will go in my landscaping so if they come back or not I still win!! Amazing video!

Crocuses bloom first in Central KY, zone 6b and they make my heart sing! I planted some tulips for the first time in probably 3 decades (never had good luck with them). Eagerly awaiting them. I moved some narcissus bulbs from a spot where they did not get enough sun. These are very special bulbs; they came from stock that has been in passed down in my family for four generations. My mother’s family always called them “little sisters”; I’m guessing because they have multiple flowers on each bloom stalk. Those are the ones I’m most anxious to see bloom this Spring. (I also planted some of them on my dear momma’s grave). ♥️🌷

Okay real talk, I LOVE LOVE LOVE tulips. 🌷 Like you, they were once my very favorite flowers. Now the ones I have in my landscape seem to come up great year after year pretty well. However, two years ago I planted 2,000 fancy bulbs in a couple of raised beds. I didn't sell any, I was just experimenting and I gave them away to family and friends. I agree with you, their return rate isn't that great. I am SO diving into daffodils after your recommendation. We didn't plant any bulbs this year because we are re-doing our entire garden, but I am going in on bulbs this Fall. 😍 Thanks for the break down of everything Nicole. 💕

I love them too! I wish they had a better return rate. I'm shying away from mass plantings of them not only for economic reasons but also for environmental ones...I don't know..it feels a bit wasteful. I'm still undecided!

I live in NW Washington state where we have an annual Tulip Festival, and it's AMAZING to see miles and miles of fields full of color in spring! I used to think tulips were boring, but I've come to love them and usually put together bouquets for all family members every year. Daffodils, however..... lol. Some of the newer double varieties are nice, but I actually don't really like yellow flowers at all (sorry!) Even marigolds I get in orange or white! P.S. So glad I found your channel! Ive been getting more into gardening the last few years, and would love to grow a cut flower garden. And your goofy humor is infectious! Subscribed :)

The garden flower I am looking forward to this spring is the Fritillaria (3 types), but the humble Daffodil is always a joy. When I was 13 years old we moved into a house that had loads of bulbs in the garden. When I started falling in love with gardening the excitement of growing bulbs was like a 5 year old waiting to open Christmas presents! They will always be such a special treat for me! Unfortunately we don't get cold enough for tulips in Cape Town, South Africa, so they never flower quite as well (have tried the freezer and that helped a little). My favourites are daffodils, Dutch irises, Freesias, Chincherinchees, gladioli and ixias (the last four are indigenous to South Africa so that's a bonus). Thanks for the inspirational content! 🤩🤩🤩

I just found your channel today and subscribed!! I enjoy your enthusiasm and honesty for your business. I have too much of a flower obsession...and I have a lot of daffodils and still can't get enough. I have mostly fancy shmansy ones. I prefer daffodils because of the SCENT, and the fact that the deer won't touch them! Tulips, rarely make it here, and like you said, they're not that reliable...I didn't realize that cutting them could effect their blooms the following year(s). I can grow dafs and hyacinths like nobody's business (no pun intended).

Awesome topic - relevant for either casual home gardeners or market gardeners! I didn’t care for daffs when I used to see them in the store. Then I planted my first bulbs in Fall 2019 - Geranium, Golden Echo, Yellow Trumpet, Tete a tete - mixed in with assorted hyacinth, muscari, crocus and alliums. When the daffs came up and as they bloomed for MONTHS I saw joy and happiness each time I passed them and when I look back at the pictures now. I now know they have scent - it’s intoxicating I love them. I know there’s a various heights and shapes - and I’m starting to figure out my preferences. And I love that they are rodent and deer resistant and that the naturalize ! I did try tulips for the first time last Fall - ice cream tulips, red Darwin hybrids, and tulip negrita. Daffs and hyacinths are my first love however!

Hi Nicole, the Dutch Iris are my favourite, and here in UK they will flower year after year, just like the daffy. I thought we had had it cold, it had got down to -5c last night! Thankfully, where I live in UK we have had no snow at all, so all the bulbs are peeping through the soil to say hello. We don’t grow on a big enough scale to have room for tulips and daffodils to sell, so the ones we grow are for our own indulgence. I’ve had the paperwhite narcissus flowering in a pot, in a sheltered spot outside since mid December!

Trying Anenome this year, so I think that gets my vote for what I’m looking forward to the most, besides the hundreds and hundreds and hundreds of “fancy schmancy” tulips and daffs that I planted in the fall because I’m like you that way. The daffs are already starting to peek up above the soil level! I also just ordered some freesia and 40 Eyeliner Lilies, but they don’t ship until Spring. (I know you’re moving away from Eyeliner lilies, but they’re just so stunning to me, and they should be able to go with any colors that happen to be in a mixed bouquet. I just had to try them for myself.)

I’ve been growing flowers for several years, but this past fall was my introduction to spring bulbs and I’m slowly getting more and more obsessed. I love all of them, but I can’t believe hyacinth aren’t as popular as daffodils and tulips. Do they not last as long outside, or do they have a short vase life? I’m still learning about them. Even though their fragrance is my favorite part, the way they look also seems to stand above the others for some reason. Love the video, and great info!
@FlowerHillFarm

I love them as well. The issue is that they are rather short stemmed. usually 8-10 inches. They are a much more popular potted plant for sale. I planted 250 of them for spring and will be experimenting! I'm excited!

That's actually what the minimum wage is in New York City. The rest of the state is slowly catching up with increases every year!
@care7663
@care7663 3 жыл бұрын
@@FlowerHillFarm Oh I feel stupid!! I forgot it varied by state!! But Wow! Ours is only $7.25!!! & let me tell you, it's not enough! There is not a home (or apt) around for less than $1000 a month. Even for a 1 bedroom. And anyone with kids, like me, that needs 2-3 br, you're looking at $1400-1800 a month minimum. (& that's for something in a trashy, run down neighborhood!) So minimum wage doesn't even cover a months rent around here! I'm lucky to make a better wage than that, now, but for nany years I had to live with roommates 😒 just to have enough money leftover for gas to get to work, food, & cell phone bill! I used to think it was ridiculous how long many women were on food stamps, public housing, etc. & didn't work (Like from the time they have their first kids, til their 2nd, 3rd kids are in middle school, high school...) but now that I'm older I see why! There's no way to pay rent, pay for food, utilities, gas, etc. with 2- 3 kids. If you make $0.25 over minimum wage ($7.50) you're not eligible for any assistance- (food stamps) so you pretty much have to be making $15+/hour, or live off the government, and most people have trouble finding a job starting out at that wage, so they just stay on government assistance.... most people aren't willing to work 40 hours a week, & live with a roommate for a couple years until they work their way up the ladder & are able to afford living on their own... which in a way I understand... I just can't stand living with people! Lol. They recently made it a requirement to at least "search" for a job 1x a week (full of 1 application a week) & the people at the food stamp office will tell you "you don't really have to, we don't have the manpower to verify it" (They've told 3 people I know that!?!) SMH.

In 2019, I planted 750 tulips in my personal garden, predominantly those that will naturalize and Triumphators (the lily-flowering ones); thinking I was done, only to get another 300 in the mail, which I had forgotten about. Not having a plan to sell bouquets last fall, l took a pass on more bulbs. Try sticking 1,050 bulbs in an already heavily planted 1/10 acre (with a house)! Flower amnesia. Being zone 4a, perennials have to be a big part of it. I found an Allium obliquum (tall stalks, evergreen foliage, lime yellow flower heads) seed on GeoSeeds so I am anxious for them to sprout. Allium 'Millenium', 'Summer Beauty' and the those with the evergreen/good foliage could be great bouquet additions (I have a lot of 'Summer Beauty'). As for this spring, Spanish bluebells, or wood hyacinths. They are on the shorter side for a cut flower at about 15"-18", but am hoping they continue to naturalize.

Here in England we have Tulip festivals in many different Castles and manner houses and they are absolutely incredible. Any way, after festivals finished most of tulips are transplanted in meadows so they could be enjoyed again. 🤩 And about daffodils if you leave them in the ground for a few years just remember they are going down literally. So prepare to dig deeper than you planted them. 😜

Now after years of dividing it is almost impossible to dig a hole in my yard and not unearth a daffodil clump. Where there were 10, now like 75-100. I wish I could post a picture or video.
