I think a good point to make is also to beginners- the more you add the more you will see the spiral happening. At college I was taught to put one stem over to the back and to twist it towards my body, add a stem and twist to create a spiral. I find keeping your hand steady sliding the stem into you hand on an angle works so much better. The more you fixate on trying to get that spiral the more you will hold it too tightly and mess it up. Relax and have fun with it. Also as John says foliage is key... it gives the arrangement a wonderfully fuller natural look.

Great job explaining through everything! I've been a floral assistant & florist the last 10 yrs, in different shops, no formal training...& I've always added my greens to the outside of hand ties, never layered like that! 🤯 this makes all the difference. Perfect presentation, thank you

Really happy that you're going through the effects and bouquets. Been making sophisticated bouquets that look as if there are no greens but there is a layer. The other day I got a request for using no greens at all yet it had to be sophisticated. Snaps, ranunculus, orchids, peony, jewel tones.
@FlowerJoos2 жыл бұрын
Yes, the foliage gives a framework - even if it is just in the core. With no foliage then some curly willow or twigs help create a frame. Your bouquet sounds lovely - beautiful jewel tones

Hello, thank you for all your in-depth tips and process! Your videos have really helped me try new skills in my floral journey. I was wondering what a good alternative to leather leaf would be? I like the color and front, but usually the back is not very pretty because of the spores.
@FlowerJoos4 жыл бұрын
Serenity_delaT hello! Thank you for watching and for your message! Yes, leatherleaf can vary in quality as well, so if small and poor it doesn’t look so good. Now the range of foliage’s is really good, and I like to use some strong leaves deep in the design. Such as fatsia and then aspidistra, but I like pistache as an alternative to leatherleaf as it has a great texture and has volume. I find the problem with leatherleaf and salad is that it become too easy only use them, and the look becomes boring. There is so many types of foliage that are very exciting - foxtail fern, eucalyptus, coccuylus . We used to have phases of not buying our usual greenery so we had to use something different! 🙋🏼♂️😀

I work as a floral associate at a grocery store and often times us expected to wrap fast on the spot. Your vids have been super helpful and I watched your "How To Gift Wrap a Hand Tied Bouquet" and it's cool but takes a bit too much time. I like the spiral hand tie look and practicality but I'm not sure what to do when it comes to cutting the stems since I don't want to expose fresh cut stems to the air for a while but at the same time, wrapping it without cutting the stems looks ugly. Any suggestions?
@FlowerJoos4 жыл бұрын
ananananamouse the best suggestions is just to tidy up any wayward stems and then cone wrap the bouquet. As long as the stems are re-cut by the customer then it’s not a problem for them to be left long. The spiral is good, and for cutting this style you can just bring the stems together and then cut straight across. It’s a good idea have a bucket of water to just pop bunches or bouquets into if you get pulled in another direction. I wouldn’t cut the handtied to final length unless it is being aqua packed. But you can cone wrap and fold over with a handtied as well, without water packing. Hope that helps 😀🌼

For novices like me, it would be easier to see precisely what you use so that I know that I'm buying the correct product. The foliage is fresh - and you can buy in a florists, or wholesalers if you have access. But you can use garden foliage as well - you can even try out some different types to see how they last. Things like ivy, privet, eucalyptus, grasses, hosta - can all come from the garden 😀🌼

That’s ok - it takes a few goes to start to get it and then more practise to really nail it. The key is practise and consistency 😀 but it sounds like you had a good start, so get some old or cheaper flowers and green and have a practise session where you make it again and again ( leave any cutting until the last one! ) 🌼
