Here is southern Wisconsin we reached 71° today and we will have a low of 15°. When it was really cold, we had snow cover, so some plants that don't overwinter have. I have both ranunculus and anemones that I missed digging up last summer with green leaves. Anemones are much hardier than ranunculus but I decided to cover them all up with leaves and some evergreens. That's why gardening is so fun because it is unpredictable!

Thank you so much 😊 I am trying to be more budget-conscious this year and there is a LOT of satisfaction in starting from seed. Plus if something doesn't make it, for some reason, then you haven't really been out of a lot of money.

my favorite seed starting mix is cocoa coir 1/3, perlite 1/3, earthworm castings. it's clean, gnat free, perfect for seedling growth- don't have damping off issue anymore. i soak the bricks of coir much cheaper than peat and doesn't overdry like the prepackaged stuff.

i just did gomphrena without soaking and they came up thank goodness! you're inspiring to start some salvia 🥰

Good to know, thank you. Trial and error are a great one for helping us find what will work best.

Mine is germinating like crazy, so the soaking, to my mind is an unnecessary step. I think every single seed germinated in 3 days!

I save those big clear salad tubs too and have been saving milk jugs. It's great being able to repurpose things like that. Thank you for showing how you start salvia, I'm going to get mine started today. 😁🌱❤️

I’m so excited about this video! Thank you! I would love to grow more salvia in my garden. There are so many types, and I only have about 6 types so far.

I am so excited about mine, they have already germinated, or many have. I was just looking online at some pink ones. If the gophers keep leaving them alone they will be a permanent part of my gardens for sure!

I love how your rose cuttings are doing! I really want to try it!
@FlowerPatchFarmhouse8 ай бұрын
I have tried the winter cuttings before and failed but I think the key to success this year, even if it was only 50%, is having them on a heat mat. Before the snow hits this weekend I am going to go out and cut a bunch more to start.

I don't soak my Gomphrena and they grow just fine. I planted the Victory Salvia last year and LOVED it. I have more seeds started this year as well.
@FlowerPatchFarmhouse8 ай бұрын
My gomphrena have all germinated so that tells me that it is an unnecessary step. I hope the salvia does well for me as it seems the gophers leave it alone. I just found some pink salvia seeds and I think I will order them. Yep, I have relented on my resolve not to buy more seeds this year. I am going to try and find a seed swap nearby to let others have all the seeds I am not planning on using.

I planted a few perennials I had in fridge this past weekend and couldn’t believe the Russian sage popped up already. I hope I see the Veronica as the seeds seemed like dust and wondered if there was any seed at all. Those super tiny seed and those pelleted I always have to be careful patting them down as they cling to anything you tap them down with. The pelleted I have to do as soon as they hit the damp soil or they mush out. Too hot in WI today 74 and will be 12 by morning or lower. Between a snow/rain storm and tornado warnings. It’s windy! Never seen weather like this in my life. Hope the plants don’t bud 😰.
@FlowerPatchFarmhouse8 ай бұрын
Yes, very wise about the seeds and patting them down. They will tend to stick so I do try to be mindful of that. Yesterday and today are sunny and warm, up to 60+ degrees and we will be getting 2 to 4 feet of snow this weekend. Sigh!

The directions with my hydroponic garden say that nutrients inhibit germination and not to fertilize until the plants have their mature leaves
@FlowerPatchFarmhouse8 ай бұрын
That may be true for hydroponics but I have not had any issues with soil. Rich soil is not necessary for germination but it poses no threat. The seedlings will draw up nutrients when they need it if it is there. Seeds will germinate with the right conditions, moisture and light. That is why we can germinate in paper towels or coffee filters. And if seeds will germinate in the garden in rich soil why would it be in different in potting soil?? Who knows...seeds are such a miracle to watch! Many recommend seed starting mix not because it is lacking nutrients but it is supposed to be sterile which helps with potential problems, like damping off, infestations, and weeds.
@davenadainton42098 ай бұрын
@FlowerPatchFarmhouse I agree. I germinate many seeds on wet kitchen roll in a plastic container with a lid. It acts like a greenhouse as long as its on my windowsill to seek light. There's no nutrients in the water that there is in soil..so i agree with pam, moisture and light is all that's needed to germinate. Good luck everyone x
