This tune was played at St. George's Chapel at Windsor Castle for the funeral of HRH the Duke of Edinburgh, it was a deeply moving as his coffin is slowly lowered to the Royal Vault when the piper played this tune, it was indeed a poignant moment and a fitting tribute as well.

We called this tune "The Lament," but we all knew what it was really called. "And the pipes played 'Flowers of the Forest" as they lowered you down."

R.I.P. Firefighters Patrick Jones, age 25 and Captain Ray Figueroa age 35. Wow what a powerful performance of Flowers of the Forest. Certainly felt it. Thank you Tress Maksimuk, Dark Isle Piper. I marvel in awe at the lone bag piper. Best wishes from a Kiwi [New Zealander].

One of my all time favourite pipe tunes. Easy enough until a lump comes to the throat while playing it. Last time I played it was at my brother-in-law’s funeral.

Your description of this wonderful tune explains why this song in particular hits home with me. The sound vibrations are very strong, and the connection is undeniable. My heart, too, goes out to those brave souls who paid the ultimate price. We are fortunate to have someone like you to help keep the memory of the strong ones alive, so that we may not forget there are those in this world who care. Many blessings!!

It's a call to spiritual warfare. As the Scot's used the pipes to call the clans to confront & fight the Romans & later the English, with this hymn it is now the Christians battle cry to come together & confront the adversary, Satan!

Once again I have to say : BRILLIANT, with your own touch. Old Air, also called “ The Liltin”, appears under this tittle in the Skene Collection, a lute or mandore manuscript of c. 1615-20. The lament makes reference to the Battle of Flodden Field, fought in Northumberland on the 9th of September, 1513, when the Scots army of James IV was soundly defeated by the English Thomas Howard, Earl of Surrey. Many Scottish noblemen were killed in combat, Earl of Lennox, Earl of Argyll….even the same King James. “Flowers of the Forest” refers to the Scots who came from Ettrick Forest. The English Army was under the command of my countrywoman “ Catalina of Aragon”, wife of King Henry VIII.

Poet Jean Elliot wrote lyrics for the ancient tune sometime about 1757. Her refrain is haunting, “The Flooers of the Forest are a’ wede awa’ “. Translated from Scots dialect, it means, “The Flowers of the Forest are all wilted away.” (Tue 21 Sept 2021 11h38)
