Question: How do you plan out the little details. Holes, shine, the stem to base, etc.?

So, a lot of the time Details are things I get inspiration of based on textures and details in real life. The thing with details and different textures, is that they are literally all around us at every moment of every day from our carpet, the wall, the cieling, the glass of a cup, plastic, fur, feathers, clouds, metal etc. We literally see details and textures by the hundreds in a single room without moving around, and we don't even see them because we take them for granted so much because they are such a normal part of daily life. So, I get my inspiration for details and textures based on opening my eyes and actually looking around me. For Flowey, he's all "Kill or be Killed" mode, so just for fun I decided to make him look a little demented in beating him up a bit, so as a flower might, making him wilt to the side with a twisted stem (like he does in the game) and holes and cuts in his pedals. For his face, the pixel you see of him in the game when he gives this face looks like a skull to me, and being as Flowey's face is white (like bone) I tried to being out that similar look of a texture, as well as making his eyes hallow like a skull and bringing out the cheek bones to give it a creepy look that some skulls have. For the stem, some plants have a rough or almost layered texture that make them rough like a thick scaly skin, or little points at the end of leaves, so being as Flowey is all "kill or be killed mode" I decided to go with that look too to make him look not so friendly. And the point of what I'm trying to say is, I got all those ideas for Flowey's textures and details in the stem/pedals/face/ from textures and details from real life, such as having knowledge of different plants, or simply by observing the stuff around me. So, when you're trying to think of details or textures, pull from the stuff that's around you, because realism/real life is how you learn and what is the best reference teacher for art, even if it's cartoon like what I do. :>

I absolutely love the colors you chose. They make him look extremely ferocious. Almost unearthly terrifying. Looking at his eyes, I get the vibe of a cold-blooded murderer with a mix of despair and lonely. This is one steler piece of art if I don't say so myself :)

Hello, just wanted to drop by and say thank you very much WalkingMelons. I'd just gotten a tablet at the beginning of last year and decided to try my hand at digital art despite not having touched art in general very much since I was a child. I never had enough motivation to draw much (except the occasional doodling in class) and I probably would have dropped the whole digital art thing after that momentary burst of excitement you get when you first try out something new, but after finding your youtube channel and seeing gorgeous artwork after artwork being created? Not only did I learn SO MUCH from you, but you also inspired me so much to just keep going with it. And I'm so glad I've picked up drawing again. I'm still no where near good enough, but I see improvement every time I pick up my tablet and that's enough for me to keep going. So, thank you very much for creating so many beautiful pieces! It inspires me and others to try do the same :)
