Mayweather80 while it's not impossible to learn take down defense, it's pretty hard to do in the time span of a single fight camp. Especially at an elite level. However, McGregor isn't a wrestler. Where he has the edge is spacing control through the use of a wider stance, in which he throws a lot of front leg kicks. He uses those front leg kicks to create distance and set up his lunging left hand, which actually covers a lot more distance than anticipated. McGregor, like Mayweather, is a pretty accurate counter puncher. But, the difference is in how he avoids the initial strike. He uses full body control to evade, which is set up by both the wider stance and the created distance from being light on his front foot. Almost a lot like Lyoto Machida used to do. He moves his full body out of harms way, therefor keeping a firm, planted base underneath him at all times. That allows him to throw counter strikes with power, as well as keeping himself planted to continue with a high volume of highly accurate follow up punches. (I say highly accurate, but obviously they don't all land) Obviously, you operate inside close range in a boxing match, and can't utilize your legs as distractions. So, that skill set becomes pretty limited and less effective. Floyd has been operating inside for his entire career, and done so at the highest level. But it's hard for me to say that McGregor's use of distance control couldn't be effective in boxing, even without the use of that front leg. However, it is easy to assume that Mayweather's limited range would be an issue for him against someone of Conor's skill inside an octagon. Now I don't say that to diminish Floyd or how absolutely brilliant he's been throughout his career. I'm saying that to illustrate just one of the issues he'd face if he decided to bring this fight to MMA. Also, the Tim Sylvia/Ray Mercer fight is probably one of the absolute worst examples to bring up. Sylvia walked into the cage at 300+ pounds and a shell of his former self (which to be honest, was still questionable considering the lack of depth the UFCs heavyweight division had at the time. Not that I should be talking shit...he'd still currently destroy me and my next of kin. But you get the picture).
