There is just something so special about SCTV. This clip is a great example. They could do a caricature of someone, real or fictional, and never overdo it. They captured the essence and made it funny without hamming it up. They understood the nuances and didn't dumb it down, understanding that their audience didn't need to be spoon fed the joke. And while the talent of the stars is beyond reproach, I think we should all acknowledge the unparalleled skill of the makeup department. Those people were geniuses.

This is most certainly one of the funniest skits ever done on television. SCTV was kicking ass during this period, and Eugene hit s grand slam with this Floyd impression. Damn, that was awesome writing! LOL Ohh... I think they just bent it a little... LOLOLO

I read that the cat was found wondering around on the set of The Godfather and Brando just picked it up and started petting it. So Francis just shot the scene with the cat in Brando's lap. It wasn't in the script. But it was a nice touch to see the cat in the scene with MB.

Eugene Levy's impression was spot-on, and not over-the-top, which is very telling, how creepy that character on that tv show, Mayberry, was. I mean, odd that producers were OK with that character, and the other ones. Was James Elroy, the crime novelist, a producer on that show?

Howard McNear wasn’t creepy-he suffered a debilitating stroke several years into the series run. Andy Griffith insisted that they allow him to continue in his role of Floyd once he had recovered. That’s the reason you never saw him moving around in the later episodes, they would position him and the other actors would work around him. Floyd has always been one of my favorites, and it speaks to the type of man he and Andy were that he was allowed to continue.

Some of their movie parodies, like ROME ITALIAN STYLE, didn't get a laugh track, and it really makes a difference. I wish they could erase the laugh track like they did for the dvd's of GET A LIFE.
