@@daveyroque1070 Uh, no. Not even close. As I said to the other guy, LOOK UP THE DEVICE. It's called an ESP Arming Adjuster, basically one half of the IBANEZ BACKSTOP. The brass block is literally just a heavier, denser tremolo block. ALL TREMOLOS HAVE A FUCKING BLOCK! The brass tremolo block adds sustain because it increases the density. Brass is denser than the standard zinc alloy blocks, and therefore increases sustain- it REFLECTS the signal going through the strings. Every piece of the system that the strings are connected to (nut, saddles, tremolo, tremolo bolts, tremolo block) make a difference in sustain, with the nut and saddles being the number 1. You want DENSER materials to reflect the signal BACK TO THE STRINGS, so they vibrate longer, thus increasing sustain. The Arming Adjuster, Backstop, and other similar devices help to create a ZERO POINT that your tremolo springs return to, so that when you bend strings or use the tremolo bar, it RETURNS TO PERFECT TUNING. Proper setup alleviates most of this, those devices ENSURE IT 100%. Once installed correctly on a proper setup, the guitar will *NEVER* go out of tune, period. And for the first guy, it does not "block" the tremolo AT ALL. It still floats BOTH WAYS. IT CREATES A ZERO POINT. Ffs, Idk why people can't take 5 minutes to Google something

Sometimes, like in my case, the guitar you want in the guitar store is plagued with a floyd rose and they don't have one with a hardtail. In this case you buy it and figure out how to make it work like this guy did. Plus as he mentioned the floyd has the perk of the locking nut that most (maybe all) fixed bridges do not. In my case i just put 2 extra springs in it that I had lying around and that fixed that problem. Helluva lot cheaper, too, I'm sure.

What is strange to me is my 2 Floyd guitars stay in tune (and hold tune after a couple days) better than my hipshot hard tail does, all guitars are 1.5K+ tier. So, it comes down to neck, set up and climate really. The hard tail has a thin neck, although carbon reinforced, no longer a fan of thin.

Richard Lopez Agreed man. My first Floyd was in an Ibanez RG350FM which was around $500 new back in the day. I bought a very very similar guitar for like $400 new a few years ago. These are not that expensive when it comes to good guitars and I could argue these are not quality built. They're both kind of a cheap aluminum but, as you said, they don't go out of tune. So long as the string hasn't stretched all that much, they'll stay in tune all day long. I hate when people say they're nothing but trouble or I can't tune it, or it's a pain in the ass. It's not. You're very first time understanding it might take you 2 hours. But once you understand how it works and have a little experience, you can do a new guitar in maybe 45 minutes taking your time. Hell, once you've tuned it once and don't change the tuning, you can swap new strings on, assuming it's the same thickness, in 10 minutes. I don't get it.

If set up right the floyd is flawless. Unless you have adjusted string height with pressure on the strings. If you adjust string height with strings tuned to pitch you'll wear out the knife edge on the base. After that your guitar will never stay in tune. I have a 2010 sl1 and it's set up correctly and no matter how I try it doesn't go out of tune.
@trevorwesterdahl6245
@trevorwesterdahl6245 7 жыл бұрын
Arg! You are referring to diving, pulling and going back and all strings are in tune. Floyd's without something like a Black Box will have the bridge bend while you bend a note... this means the other strings go out of tune while bending. Try it. Strum your Low-E and bend your strings and listen to the Low-E drop with the bend. A black Box ad-on keeps the other strings in-tune WHILE bending a note. Especially helpful on harmonic bends (playing two strings while one is bent a full step).

the block upgrades can help your sustain and tone. Most trem's especially stock trems are thin and cheap. Even Floyd Rose sells upgraded blocks separately for their trems, brass, tungsten, Titanium they have have a bit of difference in the tone and sustain. That's why a lot of people replace the blocks. Now, if you're not that concerned about sustain/tones etc. then it won't matter to you. But, most of us that really play and have for years are always looking for that never ending search of that tone that represents us personally.. the perfect tone..EVH has his, Jake E. Lee has his, Vai has his, Paul Gilbert has his and so on. We want something that stands out and represents us as an individual player. I always change up stuff on my guitars.. pups, blocks, trems, springs. Didn't really think it's such a big deal that requires someone to freak out and say what the F*** about it.. All that comment did was make you sound like a kid that has no clue about what a guitar and it's components really can do..

Bloodbath Magazine Not sure what he’s using but I’ve done a lot of experimenting with that what material to use and I’m currently using 3M command strips. The velcro on it is really good because it’s hard to penetrate through but is not the kind of material where you hear a clang at all. It’ll need changing every few months because it will eventually penetrate through slightly and you do start to hear a small clang

Then you didn't set up the Arming Adjuster with the correct amount of tension. Lower the amount of tension using the dial for the spring. Try maybe 1/4 less tension and see how that does when you pull back. Keep adjusting until it feels a little bit stiffer than what you'd like. Then, DO NOT move the spring dial, and use the dial for the rod to back it slightly away from the tremolo block. Loosen the claw screws about 1 1/2 turns each, make sure the Arming Adjuster rod is not making contact with the block, re-tune your guitar perfectly, now make the Arming adjuster rod (still not turning the spring dial) just BARELY *ALMOST* touch the tremolo block, maybe at most, the width of a business card, then tighten the claw screws back to their original position, re-tune, and reset your intonation. That should be perfect.

Other versions still allow it to float. Seems lame to have a Floyd and then hard stop it so its a dive only unit but I get that there are many players that prefer this. I believe most that hate Floyd's simply don't understand there are options... For those that want it to float AND be stable for bends: Look at an example of what Steve Vai does: kzbin.info/www/bejne/jYK5lHmgbLJ8gKM The link above shows the dual springs that essentially make it a little harder to bend the bridge but still allows for full range of motion (how much harder depends on how they are set). In that video, Steve still uses springs that don't dampen the spring sound so he also uses tissue paper. If you get FU Tone springs, you shouldn't need the toilet paper. Probably licensing reasons why Steve Vai doesn't use them and maybe something has changed since then. For those that keep saying a properly set Floyd stays in tune: You are missing the point of "when" it stays in tune. Yes all floating Floyd's properly setup will return all strings to proper tune after heavy dive bombs and pulls. That isn't the point. The point is strumming something like the low E-string and simultaneously bending a string. The pressure of bending pulls the other strings out of tune and drop them down (the low-E now drops toward D). The more you bend, the more the other strings go out of tune. This is the thing many guitar players hate about original Floyd's. So how is that fixed? Again, if you refer to the Steve Vai video, he added a different type of spring that keeps the Floyd Rose bridge from moving while bending a note. He uses it on all his guitars. In other words, it usually takes more than a full step of bending to move the bridge. Bend a sting and the low-E is still a low-E. You have to push a little harder on the whammy to bend it, but it still bends both ways. Obviously, you still get the flutter that Steve is known for too.

@ragnaroksangel
@ragnaroksangel 3 жыл бұрын
It isn't a black box, and it most certainly is *NOT* a trem stop. It's essentially one half of an Ibanez BACKSTOP. Its purpose is NOT to stop the action of a tremolo, at all, whatsoever, in ANY WAY. It creates a zero point so the springs and tremolo always return to the same position, so the guitar *ALWAYS* stays in tune while bending and floating the tremolo. So no, it isn't "unprofessional"... This dude is not a luthier (I am), and did the best he could with installation. He is correct about the lack of instructions with how to set these up, regardless of which type, and some are different than others. The Ibanez Backstop installation is the most accurate, and it's hard as hell to actually find, as they stopped making them about 30 years ago. Those instructions were made in Japan with absolutely shitty translation. Even 7 years after this video, it's STILL hard to find PROPER installation instructions. I've even met a ton of other luthiers that have no fucking idea how to properly set these up. I'd love to see you set one of these up "professionally" and PROPERLY. Get an Arming Adjuster or 2, or a Backstop, and make a video of you doing it. That way, I can be a dick to you like you did to him

And yes, I installed mine decades ago and it works exactly as intended. If YT offered the option of posting pictures in the comment section, I would gladly supply a photograph. And no, it is not difficult to properly set them up. If you understand the basics of how springs work, you can easily figure that out without an instruction manual, you just have to fiddle a bit to find the best settings. And also no, you do not need to be a luthier for that. And yes, lighting a shaky cam video with a flashlight and off-camera action with minimal editing is highly "unprofessional" video production.

@@ragnaroksangel Feel free to browse some more comments here for opinions on how well this video was received by others. The high "dislike" rate also speaks a clear language. As to what the device in question is _called,_ feel free to check the designation that guitar websites use to describe the category that the Ibanez "Backstop" belongs to. I found ibanez.fandom.com/wiki/Back_Stop quite helpful. Even Google's auto complete function adds "stabilizer" to the search term. I _used to_ call these gadgets "trem stop"s, but now that I had reason to look up the details, I agree that "stabilizer" is the more accurate term. I am not calling a Chevy a Ford, but I _do_ call both of them cars. It seems to me you are trying to call a car a bike. He even calls it a "tremolo stopper" himself at 0:30. Which is not very precise, so I offered a more precise term for those who are looking for additional information in the comment section. Also also, you might want to google pictures to find out that the device in this video is *_not_* an Ibanez Backstop, it is a Trem-Endus (www.amazon.com/Trem-Endus-Tremolo-Stabilizer-Floyd-Rose/dp/B07WJ6TJ6J) [or an identical product with different branding]. Look at it. And at the Backstop. They are _not_ the same, regardless of whether you cut the Ibanez in half. You will also find that both the _Göldo _*_Black Box_* (www.ebay.de/itm/GOELDO-BACKBOX-Tremolo-Floyd-Rose-Stabilizer/141838159199) and the _Rockinger Black Box_ (www.rockinger.com/en/parts/hardware/tremolos-tremolo-accessories/accessories/244/rockinger-black-box-tremolo-stabilizer) are *much* more similar to what can be seen in this video than the Backstop. For starters, they do not have any plastic parts, they are single row and have the mounting holes on the sides. Go figure the rest by yourself if you like. And finally, note how I wrote _"we call it_ 'black box' for short", signifying that you might have to look under different product names, but "black box" is a start that _will_ get you results like the system in this video.
