A look at the Pomera DM250 "writer deck" from the view point of a professional creative writer who is pretty finicky about the writing "zone" and keyboard feel ;) TLDR: I love it and it's a daily driver. It's almost perfect. Perfection would be a version in collaboration with Keychron...

Note on battery, 24hrs is the manufacturer claim, seems to sip juice. Screws in the back point to a potential replace if need be? We'll see.

Fellow Pomera DM250 owner here-can confirm this little guy is incredible as a no muss, no fuss, portable writing workhorse. It’s the epitome of a great tool-it empowers and gets out of the way. My biggest gripe-keyboard is not backlit, making low-light situations tough at times given the smaller size keyboard. Also, Use Case: Toilet … PERFECTION. The split view is the icing on the cake for me, making it a mini-Scrivener sort of machine for me.

Thanks for the comment and glad to hear someone else is digging this thing. Agree, a backlit keyboard would be useful. I didn't think I'd care but there are times when it would add usefulness. Toilet! I use that exclusively or the Switch ;). The spit screen I've not used but I can see how handy that could be.

Yes, the Backlight option on the settings option deals more with the brightness of the screen, not backlighting of the keys. A clip-on light should help.

@@bundie702 yep. A backlit keyboard might be one of the final pieces of the puzzle on this device to make it perfect in my humble perspective.

For anyone struggling with the cost...I ordered mine through Amazon Japan. Had to set up a new Amazon account, since they don't recognize US accounts. Used a credit card that doesn't charge foreign transaction fees. The cost with shipping was just under $300. Will have to check my statement to see if there were any other charges added, like import. So it wasn't cheap, but it's not as expensive as on eBay (and this was brand new, not used). I do hope King Jim starts to sell these in the US...

You know, I had my heart set on a DM-30. I like the way it folds out, and I like the idea of it being very compact, and I like the way it looks. But your review has made me consider the usability of the device on my lap, which I hadn't previously. It wouldn't work, it would fold back up a bit. I'm now moreso considering one of these wider devices I can use in more places, like on the train or the loo. Thanks!

I LOVE your lego writerdeck, it's extremely fun. I'm waiting for a DM250 to arrive from Japan so this review is awesome to help with the wait. You answered everything I wanted to know, especially about the keyboard. I too have way too many keyboards so I was worried the Pomera's was gonna be unusable. It would be so amazing to be able to connect your mech keyboard to it. I liked all your use case reviews as well. I'm even more excited to get my Pomera now.

Yay! Yeah the Lego thing was a blast. I hadn't played with it in a while. Getting all the correct pieces on line etc was, ironically, a MASSIVE distraction ha ha. Good luck with the DM250. And don't forget after you change the language, press the alt/key right of the esc at the same time, an icon will change in the bottom right and will make sense of your inputs. Thanks for the comment.

Thanks for the review ... not a bunch of information on the Pomera devices out there. I appreciate you showing how to change into English layout. This looks like a great distraction-free alternative to devices like the FreeWrite. I'm hoping they come out without another e-ink version of this with the same clamshell design and English layout. Thanks!

You're welcome, thanks for the comment! It's become a daily driver for me, the distraction free element has had a strong effect on my productivity. eInk would be nice. I just received my mat screen protector which may make it a little easier on the eye. It's been no issue though. Clean, sharp screen. English layout - I'm a brit but use usa set ups, I'm used to it :)

Is that Ursula K. LeGuin’s Tombs of Atuan at 5:02? That was my favorite edition of the Earthsea series because of the cover art.

Excellent review! I'm still toying with getting the DM250. I use the Pomera DM30 all the time, but I am NOT a fan of the keyboard layout. The screen, menus, saving options, QR code feature are all brilliant, but time and time again, when I hit the right SHIFT key, I hit the UP arrow by mistake and wind up typing gibberish somewhere else in the file I'm working on. IF ONLY some brilliant engineer could re-make these devices with a standard layout and the arrow keys at the top! If only .....

My only Problem with this is that the keyboard looks too small for writing sessions. I wish they would Update this with a normal sized keyboard and I would but it immediately

Did you not get the US layout key STICKERS in the box? Which you could add to some of the keys. Noticed other videos that did this and it looks really great.

actually, you can change the keyboard layout from Japanese to US by changing the settings and putting stickers on each key!

Nice review! How do you transfer what you’ve written in that to other devices?
@floydhayes
@floydhayes 7 ай бұрын
USB C to USB C cable, save to transferable SD card, use the app and capture the on device generated QR code and finally you can link an email account to it and email the txt doc to yourself.

I live in Turkey and we had like 150 percent inflation... Both Freewrite and this are impossible to purchase, like many other stuff. I'm just watching youtube videos of the device in _starvation_

Thanks for the comment! They are just things, life has more important stuff going on so I don't think you're missing out too much. They will get cheaper and as new things come out, keep an eye on eBay for occasional lower prices and also hope inflation gets under control!

@@floydhayes don't you worry, I'm just wisecracking about my country's unironic state. Though I would've loved to own this, I know this isn't the end of the world, nor am I _actually_ starving. Our inflation will go down no doubt, but that's not even my first concern with the authoritarian leadership intact. Lots of love, good day

The absolutely much BETTER freewrite, this. Too bad its distribution is severely limited. Makes it unnecessarily expensive.

I haven't tried the freewrite but I like the way the Pomera looks more. I'm sure the FW keyboard is superior from what I have read. The DM250 is expensive but for me it is proving good value as I use it everyday. Thanks for the comment!
