I spent 22 years in submarines and also 37 years altogether in the US Navy. Best time in my life! I have a masters degree in engineering. I really think it’s helpful to have knowledge of engineering in the Navy I’m glad my mother pushed me towards that. Best decision I made!

1st thing,thank you for your service! I've often wondered, is there a height limit on a sub? I'm 6'8 375 pounds. From the videos I've watched, I don't think I'd fit😂

From the design stage in the early 70's, to its launch in the early 80's, it was a very impressive machine but that was 50 years ago when computer technology was in its infancy. I'm not suggesting that up-grades were not periodically addressed but we've entered a totally new era. An era of global surveillance, satellite networks robotics and most of all, artificial intelligence that will allow for un-maned, coordinated, swarm attacks and that's just the beginning. The carrier task force and the fighter jets it carries are obsolete as it the 50 year old SR-77. The Chinese already have their own JPS network giving them the ability to locate anything on the globe perhaps even underwater. The Big Boys in arms development are already showing up in Washington with plans to counter these threats but as with EV cars, we can't compete. Chinese graduate 6 million engineering degrees per year and the US 80k and half of them are Asian students studying in the US.

Just before I arrived at Newport News, the shipyard statue was donated to the Martine Museum because the new owner did not like the inscription: "We build good ships at a profit if we can, at a loss if we must, but always good ships". Not sure if that is exact words, but close. Newport News had been bought by Tenneco Corporation. Great four years there working projects across the yard.

SUBMARINERS are a Special Breed: FRANKLY; I couldn't do it-Too tall-Don't really enjoy tight quarters w. no windows AND realizing external pressures of THOUSANDS of P.S.I (Just a pinhole crack could send a jet of water that could cut you in half!). I taught a GREAT -GUY,a HELMSMAN who lived through an ELECTRICAL FIRE on a Sub (HALIFAX;Cdn, 1990's) and he's STILL messed up (P.T.S.D.) to this day!

In the 1960s you had to be shorter than 5’9”. Both my brother and brother in law met that qualification and served as sonar tech starting in 1963. I tried to get sub duty in 1971 and they wouldn’t let me because of my height and ended up in a patrol squadron chasing submarines.

All the ballast tanks are in the stern and bow. The front of the submarine you see is not steel and it is filled with fresh water. The forward ballast tanks are just behind that. I worked in a shipyard that built these almost 50 years ago. Both my brother and brother in law served on submarines and I got to go on my brothers when it was in port overseas where I was deployed in the military.

Pounds per square inch. I lived three hundred yards from the shipyard as a child, my father was one of craftsmen who helped construct the first nuke boat, SSN 571 the USS Nautilus.
