I find the literal translation part really helpful and not a lot of people show them, so thanks!
@FluentinMandarinDotCom6 жыл бұрын
Yes I think that literal translations can help. In my new Chinese Sentence Mastery course, I actually break down every single sentence with a literal translation, but I don't do it in every video, just when the word order is very different to the English, otherwise sometimes there can be too much information on one slide and it gets confusing.
I am Korean, But My English is not good. 我来说中文,为你能够用英文把把这个字的含义用英文解释的这么地道感到佩服,把这个字对于韩国人来说也挺难学到的词汇,因为它本身没什么特别的含义,但相比韩文,更接近于英文的表达方式。把电脑送过朋友了,其实跟我送电脑给朋友了也是一个意思。所以对于熟练英文的人来说这样的表达方式更容易学到的。I sent my computer to my friend. 可以拿出现在把后边的单词当作是一个宾语来对待。反正你很厉害的,我反而学到了地道的英国英文 😄

I understand all the other concepts you have made videos of, however 把 is another beast. I'm still unsure about it.

From Dutch it has the same kind of grammar: subject verb and the things affected by the subject and there being something caused.

Another good video Chris. btw see.. - please get the door opened so on.. To me above English version seem also close enough to explain . isn't it ? -
@FluentinMandarinDotCom6 жыл бұрын
Sort of, but 'get the door opened' implies that the other person is going to ask somebody else to open the door, whereas in fact they are opening the door themselves.

I'm struggling with the usage of 某, as in the following two examples - 中国某大学来华留学生 and 课余担任某健身俱乐部教练 . These are from a character intro in the Great Wall Chinese textbook. The book translates these as, "An international student of a university in China" and, Works in a fitness club as coach in his spare time. Google translates these as, "A Chinese university student in China," and "After-class as a fitness club coach. In the first sentence I kind of get it, if it is modifying "大学, as in or at a certain university. But the latter sentence is just a mystery, particularly if it is modifying 健身俱乐部教练. Greatly appreciate an light you can shed on this.

These books do have some weird sentences! 某 is not really just 'a', it means 'a certain',. Eg 'a certain university' or 'a certain fitness club', coach in 'a certain fitness club', but you don't know which one. Does that make sense?
@bscottc16 жыл бұрын
Yes, thanks for taking the time to reply. I read the same thing in a couple of dictionaries, but the loose translation in the textbook (ie. they don't actually use the word certain in their translation) kind of throws me off. Your confirmation helps.

I kind of mean "some", and either the author or the person in interest does not want or bother to give the name.

Thanks for the video. I like that they are more indepth. I have 1 question though. At 10:46. If I wanted to say: give the computer as a present. Would this be correct: 我打算把电脑礼物送给我的朋友?
@FluentinMandarinDotCom6 жыл бұрын
I don't think you can say that, besides 送 means give as a gift anyway, so I don't think you really need the 礼物
@duoyang6 жыл бұрын
If you want to add the word “礼物” to it. You can say: 我打算把电脑送给我的朋友*作为礼物* or 我打算把电脑*作为礼物*送给我的朋友 which is basically adding “as a gift” to the sentence.

shouldn't it mean simply "to make?" like to make something happen?
@amekanasai4 жыл бұрын
It's actually close to "take" than to "make". Anyway 把 literally means to grasp/grab/take/hold.
