I'm an FOH Egineee and I travel out with a few bands. One of the bands I work with have an IEM that I designed. These guys wanted it to be very cost effective so I suggested the behringer x-air 16 with a Seismic audio 24 channel split. The only thing that goes to the X-air is kick, snare, bass, 2 guitars, 3 vocals, tracks, click, and an extra AUX send if time doesn't permit for the guys to run their entire split . The x-air 16 has four AUX outs which I run for lead vocals, bass, and two guitars while the main out I run is for drums so he can have a stereo mix. They all run galaxy audio IEM's because they are inexpensive but I highly recommend replacing the earbuds with something like the Shure se215's if your budget is super tight. That IEM rig costs about $1000 US and works very well, the band has complete control over their own mixes with their phones

My band run a similar system but with X18 (also acting as our main mixer) 3xLD Systems IEM (drummer isn't wireless) in a 4U Gator shallow rack case with mixer sat on top. It's not as high end as Fluff's rig but for a function band who don't want to take floor monitors to save space and everyone having control over their own mix onstage it's great and I think cost us about £1000.00.

So for my band we have a super ghetto super cheap IEM system. We have everything going direct to my audio interface into a laptop, and we have a 4 channel headphone amp with headphone extension chords to run to our earbuds. The entire show is run on our laptop and we don't need front of house at all. Then the main mix goes to our pa which is actually a big home stereo system, but hey, for a small high school band, it works!

I think we should take a moment and appreciate the fact that musicians spend years learning their instruments and vast amounts of money on the necessary equipment to carry out their goals only to sell the music for pennies, which people wont pay for and just pirate.
@perpetualgrimace

Yep, only us musicians are stupid enough do dump so much money and effort into something for so little reward.
@imdartson3679
@imdartson3679 7 жыл бұрын
Wanting to make music and not doing so would ultimately be even more stupid, though. I guess it depends on how you define "reward".
@perpetualgrimace
@perpetualgrimace 7 жыл бұрын
Well, it's ultra rare for it to be financially rewarding and it often isn't socially rewarding either. Haha. I think our society which values money above all else is horribly broken. And yet, knowing all this, I still pursue music because writing and playing music is its own reward. ¯\_(ツ)_/¯
@imdartson3679
@imdartson3679 7 жыл бұрын
Exactly. My motivation is being an old man regretting not making music because there's no money in it. It's also frustrating when you tell non musicians you want to do music they assume you mean platinum selling artist on the radio winning grammy's. Doing it and it simply being out there is reward enough. It just sucks how the modern world has stripped us of our ability to make a living on it. Now everyone is making gear demos on youtube to compensate.
@perpetualgrimace
@perpetualgrimace 7 жыл бұрын
100% agree. The one upside of our time is that practically anyone can record their own music, given a bit of money to spend on gear and the time and willingness to learn. There are so many learning resources available, and entry level gear is ridiculously cheap. The flip side, which you mentioned, is that recordings have been devalued. Now listeners would rather pay for the convenience of a Spotify account than financially support the artists making the music they love.

been there... toured with a band that played there many years ago. I was the band's touring sound engineer and all I got was major attitude from the sound douche there. I think he was all tuned up... sniffle sniffle. Pretty small stage and not very high up off the floor... maybe 2 feet. Even if those nasty beatup old ass monitors would have taken a digger it probably would have shaken loose some of the dust and dried up beer in the horns. What dick that guy was. LA sux... it has since the late 80's when I started playing there. Venues think their doing you a favor by allowing you to play their shit hole club on nite with 5 other bands, playing 40min sets, and your playing the 7pm slot, in front of 6 people and the bartender for FREEeeeee... Literally working on our rack today so great timing! We've been building one of these for our band, motivated especially after our first tour and the huge variance of sounds guys and house monitors at different venues which affected our performance at some stops. That and we sound a million times better when we can all hear each other and the click :) The rack is almost complete but as of now we only have wired connections to our in ears (I can imagine that would be a mess live) so we've been looking at different wireless options (budget buster!), was not aware of Galaxy so thanks for that info we will look into them. Great video, you've helped us move one step closer to getting this thing a reality. Hopefully in time for the next show...

We have been running in ears for years now.. My advice is to still do a sound check. I wouldn't recommend just setting up and calling it good. YES your in ear mix will sound A+ to you. But what are the audience hearing. I would still use the time to do sound check with the sound guy even though your hearing it perfect in your in ears....

My band uses 1 Behringer XR18 , 1 IEM (splited stereo for 2 mono's) for bass and guitar, I use a stereo feed directly from the XR18 to a Behringer P1 on drums. Tascam 16x08 audio interface to output Clicks, Backvocals, Synth and Subwaves individually to the mixer. And in case one of the Wireless bodypacks fail ,there's a Behringer Powerplay with two 10 meter cables running to the Guitar/Bass positions. everything runs silky smooth!

holy shit man. we just built literally the same rig. in canada this rig cost us 8-9k. the most money your going to spend is on the wireless units and earbuds. even the cheap Shure 215s cost 140$ here, and the shure wireless unit costs about 1300$. we did it with an analog mixer we found that had 6 auxs so it worked for us but i literally just picked up our x32 today. stoked!

Ryan...you not only intrigued me but also answered a fundamental question in what is involved in making one of these systems work. I do have a few questions as I'm going to build one of these as I am seeing a need that needs to be filled at my church. I the no that I already know the answer to a few of these questions, but and this is a huge qualifier as "buts" go...so perhaps what I think I know is in error and on the flip side your answers will validate my knowledge. So here goes. 1) How do you feed a flat, uncolored by your system set of signals from each source, be it a miked guitar cab, an XLR out from a bass head, the lead vocal mike, etc. to the FOH feed? Is that the purpose of that splitter you mentioned? 2) Can each band member control their own mix from their own tablet or smartphone (providing the rack mounted mixer compatible app is installed on the tablet or phone)? 3) You are set up for a 5 piece band if I understood your explanation. What is entailed in expanding your capabilities in the event that you're the next TSO and need 8 or 16 or 24 or...???? personal monitor feeds? 4) If I understand your system correctly, you're ability to cater and design your stage monitor mix is completely autonomous from the venue's FOH desk, operator, amps, driver mains, etc.? Yes? 5) Have you encountered any issues with a venue's FOH engineer or the venue management objecting to your band's personal monitor system or using your system in deference to what the venue offers? Thanks in advance for your responses if you're willing and able and a special thanks for putting this video together in the first place.

Here's how you could go a lot cheaper and far more compact for a three member band: 1 IEM transmitter with two receivers. The both receivers get their own mix, but they are mono. basically, stereo left goes to one receiver and stereo right goes to the other. The drummer gets a headphone cable. He doesn't have to move, after all! Behringer Xr12 as the mixer. It has plenty of inputs and wireless control. Basically, this setup is like 600-800 bucks...

fluff video has helped massively with working on a in ears rig for my bands, yeh im setting up one rig for two. ive gone down the less pricey route of using the xr18 rather than the x32 but being that they are both 3 rack spaces i can switch them out if i come into some funds, also your drawing let me realise that i can use the main outs to supply another stereo mix! which was a great help! love the channel and rest repose!

the beauty of the x32, you can connect the computer with the usb and use 16 digital chanels for whatever you need, separate the backing tracks individualy and mix them, and the other thing, connect to another x32 or m32 (very common on clubs) and use that solely to control FOH, with my band we have the x32 rack and it is amazing, everyone does his own mix, before as the audio nerd, i had to be the monitor engineer

I just got some IEMs an with my personal band we're just playing bars around town. I got the Ultimate Ears Sound Tap ($250) and it solved all of my problems. It's a box that will take a powered speaker input (1/4", XLR and even Speakon) and turn it into a headphone signal. The theory is you can unplug the input from the back of your wedge, plug it into this box, and run a through cable back into the wedge. It splits the signal and you have control of the volume of your IEMs. You're still running on the FOH guy's mix, but for my 3 piece band I figured it was worth it.

If you already have a digital board with plenty of monitor sends, just invest in a headphone monitor amplifier such as Behringer’s P-1 or P-2. Sure you are wired, but with a extension cable you feel fairly free. We put together an IEM setup for our six piece band without breaking the bank.

Excellent video, yeah i'd love something like this for my own wedding band.. but sadly everybody has gone out and bought their own personal solutions over the years as opposed to us all collectively agreeing on one system and then making the investment. The main issue is that the band guys play in multiple other bands so they kinda need a system they can just take away with them for other gigs. I'd love to design a setup where i could just start small then build it up over time.. I'm a 'well gigged' keys player but have only been experimenting with in ears for a few months now, have always used stage wedges. My first thought was "why do i need a wireless system at all?" i'm always sat down and don't move too much. So I purchased a pair of Shure in ears to test them out and then quickly realised that there's not a whole load of decent wired body packs out there that are practical for gigging. Each one I've tried has either been plastic and not durable enough, or only plays out one ear, relies on 9 volt square batteries or has stupidly impractical proprietary cables you would never use for anything else. I haven't been able to find what I need anywhere online but surely they must exist? What i think i need: A physically wired, rechargeable body pack with dual mono/stereo and maybe a input 1/2 mix control Alternatively: if there's a (budget of £1000) wireless system you can suggest which would be more practical i'd be willing to consider it. It seems the wireless systems may be far further in terms of design quality and practicality than the wired ones, I just don't want to wast money making it wireless when maybe i dont need that.. Any help is much appreciated thanks, Scott PS: I 100% agree with "not setting everybody up individually via the sound guy", it's a disaster waiting to happen and i'm a control freak lol. The main distinction for us though is that we are all responsible for our own sound, (our mixer is on stage with us) meaning we can tweak until our hearts content then save our mixes, nobody else ever touches them, so its' not too much of an issue at the minute.

Very interesting. Thanks for the input! Very good video. I have a rather inexpensive way of InEars set up atm. It is not wireless but, honestly, that was never a priority for me. I play with a cable and so I'm tethered to my board anyway. The set up hinges on playing with a cable; if you're not then it will be a pain. How it works is: You get regular In Ears (I went with Shure SE 215s because they are phenomenal and money is tight. But you can take whichever you want. Go for the ones you like). Then you run a really high quality headphone extension cord (like 7 m long) to your board along with the cable you use. I have a VOX coil cable that altogether measures 9m (though it's closer to 5m in reality, because, well, coils) so the extension fits snugly inside like in a tube. I tape it off at the instrument end of the VOX cable so it doesn't get caught if I actually step farther away from the board. Also this way it won't move too much and won't put tug at your In Ears and maybe snatch them from your ears altogether. My guitar player uses a Klotz cable matched with his head phone extension. He just tapes the two cables together at certain instances. Looks rather ugly in my opinion but, hey, whatever floats your boat. And the number of people who pay attention to the cables the band uses at a gig are rather slim I would imagine. So, we now have the headphones, with the extension, snugly taped so it doesn't snag (or pull at the headphones). It runs all the way to the board where the two lines split. ON THE BOARD we have a stereo headphone amplifier. I use a Behringer Powerplay P1 because, again, money is always a factor. Also, the Powerplay does all I want. It's a solid stereo headphone amp and can also be used in the studio or at rehearsal. Now is where the first variable enters the equation: How do you actually get input? Well, the headphone amp has an XLR connection at one end and a headphone out (duh). If you have wedges on stage they also have XLR inputs in the back. So instead of using the wedge monitors on stage you take the XLR connection and plug it straight into your headphone Amp. You receive the mix the sound guy would have given you anyway but you're atually on In Ears. Also, with an additional input, you can run click. all on a cable. Now, I recognize the fact that the efficiency of this set up hinges on the willingness of the venue to unplug their wedges for you and on the sound guy not being bad at his job. So far I didn't have problems with this method though. My band has our own sound guy who is with us most of the time. And even if he isn't, the venues have been very compliant to our requests. And even for resident sound guys who mix us when we do far away gigs without our own guy it's basically just plug and play and mix how you mix anyway. The whole set up retails for less than 200€ (approx 240$). I acknowledge that it is far from perfect but it's a cheap and altogether satisfactory solution if you're tired of terrible wegde sound. Cheers!

Dude, thank you for the great info! I have a 4 piece band and we are looking to build a IEM rig. Trying to decide what we actually need is difficult due to lack of experience using in ears. We’ll absolutely consider your recommendations. Cheers from Sacramento 🍻

My band also have a ghetto super cheap wireless IEM system: two returns from front house(monitor and click) then those go into an small mixer on stage and then we connect FM radio transmitters(cheap ones) to the outputs and we use our phones as recivers using the radio app. It works, specially to hear the click :p

Hello Ryan! Your system is cool and i know why you created it way you did. But i want to point out that cheaper way to do this is to buy everyone in band headphone amp. (Like behringer etc 50$/player) then just locate the amplifires next to guitar amps etc. Guitarist can buy cable where is guitar cable and headphone cable glued together. (20$) Wireless is often useless cos stages are so small or guitarist has guitar cable anyway :D. Drummer can always have wired iem cos 1. drummer dont walk during show and 2. its more stabile than wireless. ( think about battery.) So. 5 member band (2guitarist,bassist, drummer and vocalist) can have this system about 700$

I mean, if they're cheap crap wedges they can tip over, but any good venue with the funds to have a band like fluffs play could easily afford decent ones that can withstand being used as a footrest. That sound guy was a dick

Quick Question for you on this. From the look of things you have guitars, bass and vocals going in to the system but what about drums, how do you work that into things? Also, can you show, or explain a little bit, how you are splitting the signal to go out to FOH.
@rapscallion52
@rapscallion52 5 жыл бұрын
Finally seriously looking into this. sending the two-notes torpedos into the IEM rig, are you affected by the master volume on your amps? So during sound check, you may have to adjust your amps for the stage volume that FOH wants, or maybe to suit the room better, and then you'll have to adjust everyone's in-ear mix as well? taking away a little bit of the "set and forget" aspect of your closed system?

That's the dream... I am building (in my head only) a FULL system, allowing us to :- recieve every signal from every mic - splitting it to send it "to the house"- providing individual mixes for everyone- recording the live performance And I LOVE planning this stuff... even if it stays at a dream state (at least for now).

Just a bit of advice, I noticed you directly put your rack screws on the drill, then tightened immediately. It's best if you start the screws first, then tighten them. It might be more of a pain in the ass to do, but it will prevent stripping the threads in the rack itself. Nice stuff though.

One issue with closed systems, is that if you rely on it to the point where you don't sound check, you can run into issues where the engineer is using a different mic on and instrument, that takes a ver different gain.

Of course, to deal with the wall warts, you could have left a space or two and put a cover in the front. That would also allow more air flow.

Awesome Fluff, my band have a very similar setup, only difference is that we don't split, everything is plugged into our x32 rack, then we send only LR to FOH. First 16 channels is FOH, the rest is for the IEM. We also travel with a FOH Engineer, so no problems with someone that doesn't know the system. Your cable management seems better than mine haha, i need to improve that.

And I thought I was being crazy. I actually planned on using my two Saffire Pro 40s to feed all mics/instruments into them, then run a pass-through to FOH so they can mix it as they see fit and a couple of mixes for our in ears. That seems a bit cheaper compared to your solution, since the two are cheaper than a single X32 and would eliminate the need for a splitter as well. Only drawback is that you'd need a laptop to mess around with the mixes.
@wk4958
@wk4958 7 жыл бұрын
Don't the Saffires only use Jack outs? if you're giving FOH a bunch of Jack cables for your patch, you're asking for a headache. Just split before it goes into the Saffire.

I've just invested in IEMs after years of not being able to hear myself in my previous bands. I've never had a sound tech cut me off intentionally, but in general, sound techs are trying to prevent feedback from happening (especially on a tiny stage) and so I've had many times when they turned me way down and I couldn't hear myself at all.

IEM’s also save your ears from the deafening decibels found on most stages. They also help your vocalist to not OVERSING, thus, saving their voice and giving him/her stamina. I have one of these built cos I’m a loser and have nothing better to do with my money. The part I can’t figure out - how do I get all of the drum mics to my rack mixer? Are those Y cables as well?

Ryan, I see in your layout you only have 1 mic for drums. I presume you find this good enough to hear the kit then. My old system which had the crest monitor mixer with built in splits worked well but we miced up the whole kit which was great for clarity and control.
