Wow that takes me back. I'm an Island Boy and my dad worked with the airlines. My mom is a haole girl from stateside. My mom missed her home, so when my dad got hired, we started flying back to the States, and we had to pass through Hawaii each way. We also had a lot of family and friends in Hawaii, and my mom used to live there for a few years when she was a little kid; she was a USCG/Navy Brat. The only Hotel Luaus I've been to were temp jobs as a busser or dishwasher. We used laugh at the tourists from behind the scenes. All other luaus I've been to are the real deal. All friends and family, most of whom are native to the Islands. Some Americanized food just because we had a hankering for it, but served next to the real dish. Some of us did the dances, performed music, or other traditional stuff. I did hula from age 5 to 28, a lot of the time with my dad. Sometimes, someone like my parents would go on vacation, leaving us kids at home. On a couple of occasions, they did the full tourist thing. Staying at a resort and doing a Hotel Luau. We do enjoy the touristy version of many of the performances that take our traditions and change them up to please the tourists. Those are a lot of fun. If you're a vacationer and tourist, though, remember that there's a whole lot of culture behind the entertainment. 😊🤙
