Flugplatz Finsterwalde

Built between 1934 and 1935, the Flugplatz Finsterwalde initially served as the main base for the II./Kampfgeschwader 3 "Blitz" aka "Blitzgeschwader". By 1939 it was turned into a pilot training school.
After the end of WWII, the soviet took over the airfield, and by 1961 built the "Sonderwaffenlager Finsterwalde" - codename: "2952 Technical Repair Base of the Airforce" (РТБ ВВС 2952), storing over 80 nuclear warheads by the mid 1980s.
The facility was handed over to the German state after the Soviet withdrawal in the early 1990s. The majority of the buildings were torn down, though the hangars, tower, runway and soviet prefab buildings were saved. The Flugplatz Finsterwalde retained the right to operate for private flights, though the rest of the facility gives off the aura of a ghost town.
