Hi Mel, I've just watched a heap of your videos in a row. I'm desperate to try this technique...I'm waiting until I can get some pouring medium, or I have since found that PVA craft glue (or Elmer glue) is a more affordable alternative. I don't remember seeing you add any pouring medium. Can you tell me if that's right? Can I do it with pain and water only? And, if so, do you get crazing in your paintings? I want to do a big one like this for our new home. Thanks for making these videos. The paintings are beautiful. Very gorgeous!

I'm wondering the same, I've tried a few drops of soap to about 2oz of water, and I dont get that effect. I wonder if it's closer to equal parts. I dont think she'll answer this. I've noticed when asking how to's, she doesn't respond. But she has a "her secrets"to all the question you can buy. I've not bought, just keep trying on my own

Stunning! I wonder if the dish soap influences the drying procedure. And...does that thick paint crack upon drying? Thank you!

When I tried the swirl technique, it looked really promising...after it dried, it sunk into the canvas and all of the different layers of colors combined and muddied together. It didn't look anything like it did wet. Does this happen to you? How do you fix it? Do you spray a clear coat on it before it all mixes?
@elfiewilkins66396 жыл бұрын
Deric Saw your question and will offer you a suggestion. It could be that the paint consistency was too thin. Try again with a thicker mixture. Good luck

Do your paintings dry glossy or matte? And if they dry matte, do you seal them with something to give them a glossy appearance?

Paint dried matte unless it's metallic. You add a varnish after that can bring out the shine.

DUCK TAPE HANDLES: Here is a Paul Shepherd handling technique: Take a strip of duck tape. Pinch it together in the middle. Stick the remaining two loose ends to the back of your canvas board or piece to be painted. The pinched together part makes a handle to grip and hold your work with while you do your tilting of the piece. 4 handles on a larger piece. When your work is dried just peel the duck tape off. With this you can tilt in any direction while keeping your hands away from the running paint.

I like your negative space much better than the ones that cover the canvas and look a little frantic. Maybe it’s just that you move your canvas a lot. As far as density goes, there’s a very scientific reason you get cells without any oil. The less dense pigmented paints will float over and rise up to the surface. That creates the cell action you see. If you’re truly interested to learn more about the density, Golden Paint website has all the densities listed. Yes, it is their brand, but all brands that use pigments will be very similar to the Golden paints. I’ve noticed you used that brand a few times. You can’t really gage the craft paints like the artist brands bCause they have little to no pigments. To keep their paint inexpensive, they rely, on dyes to get color. Check out the density chart at golden. Go to Technical😦
@FairyArtMother6 жыл бұрын
Sorry. Go to Technical, then Resources, then Paint Density.
@MelyDartist6 жыл бұрын
This video is over a year and a half old. I've learned a lot since this experiment and have seen the chart a long time ago. I am quite aware about density. I have a few videos about it that are quite old also. Thanks for taking the time to write in though. Maybe if others read this they will learn something. Oh and I agree completely that with negative space it looks much better. Maybe if you checked out my more recent work you'd like.
@FairyArtMother6 жыл бұрын
MelyD.artist I’m looking at all of them. I just started at the beginning after seeing your most recent. Please don’t think I’m being critic Leonard. I’ve just spent a lot of time watching videos and researching how Paint works and find it fascinating. I did like your most recent work better than your earlier pieces. I hope to see more.
@MelyDartist6 жыл бұрын
Judy Sand I apologize if I sounded a bit cold. This is such an experimental process and I agree the science of it is absolutely fascinating. My older videos, in my opinion, are pretty bad. I learned a lot in time and the visuel is also a bit better. I even feel like deleting some.. anyhoo, thanks for writing in and thanks for watching.

you use only pouring medium in the white, why not in the other paints?

Beverly Green because the other paints don't need it. The Artist's Loft brand is cheap paint, hence the need for pouring medium.

If you go to Lowe's, or Home Depot, you can get a couple of halogen work lights on stands. Set them up so the lights are about 3-4 feet above and about 2 feet or so to the sides of your canvas. Aim them at the canvas (you'll see how to position them pretty easily). That should brighten things a lot!
