I just saw the upload. Havent had time to watch it. I'm willing to bet it's not as bad as he makes it sound. The T5 has been in use for probably 15 years as a good cheap meter I doubt the addition of 1 feature makes it dangerous now.

I definitely want to see mike test that. When the red lead was hot, the screw on the back of the device (touching your hand) was hot. Whether it can actually push current through is another matter. For instance, suppose the resistance from that point is 1Mohm. It will still say 120v when the circuit is open, but the majority of voltage drop happens at the point of highest resistance, so the actual current might be trivial. Maybe you get 0.00000001A of current through your body. Maybe it's just horrendously designed and you get the full zap from shorting a 120v across your body.

i doubt it's designed in a way that it would be possible to hurt or kill someone. i'm gonna find out tomorrow

Hey Mike, I am an industrial electrician in an old steel mill, I use a T6-1000 daily. Working in a 100+-year-old steel mill you come across some things that you just don't want to disturb, Old bad work. Equipment and disconnects such that will make shake your head and say WTF. I found the none contact voltage testing useful as well as being able to check amps with the open end fork vs the clamp. Also on the new no-touch contacts and disconnect were you can't even get your probes on a termination to check for voltage. I check for volts with the none contact forks before I start to take the protective covers off the disconnects so I can then use the probes to again verify no voltage present. So from my experience, I have found it useful. That being said the meter has it downsides also. The biggest dislike I have is the length of the leads. Sometimes there isn't enough room in a panel to hold the meter and get into were you make your check. I bought the magnet to hang the meter, and 2 more feet of leads would be nice. Maybe I will make an in the field video and post it.

That t6 is a great meter to keep in the bag. Small, easy to use, etc ... if you need more go back to the truck for the biggun. I did a lot of residential service calls, so an ammeter wasn't generally needed - but when we'd go to a factory or hotel or something, that ammeter would have been handy. Oh - and the reason you don't see many clamp DC meters, is at least partly because they're pretty costly, and the use cases are very limited for now. If we start seeing a lot more solar, that might change. The DC clamp ammeters use the Hall effect instead of inductance. You can actually use a regular 10A meter to measure some incredibly high amperages, it's just not very convenient and its not no contact - you have to use a shunt resistor, then calculate the amps based on the reading. Something like - 100x shunt, reads 2a on the meter = 200a current.

Also worth noting that these new ones are true RMS and have wider jaws which measure up to 200 amps. I think T5s only did 100 amps? That alone is worth the extra 50 bucks or whatever. Either way these look really nice, im excited to pick one up soon! Cheers.

I had a massive shock from the rear grounding from my Fluke T6, I did not feel well at all after for 2-3 days and had to have cardioversion (my heart reset) in hospital. But I think I was lucky as it was only at 120v. It took around 6 weeks before I felt normal again.

I have and used the t5-1000 for years and never had any issues with it other than when the leads get old they tend to get stuck inside of meter and you kinda have to pry them out other than that it's a fantastic little meter especially if you are working with a young Apprentice. You really don't have to worry about if he knows how to use a meter or not. Like you said it's idiot proof. But anyway this looks like something I'll be upgrading to soon even if the no contact feature is a little jankey. For the simple fact that it has a backlight.

If you read the specifications carefully, it's +-3% + 3 counts on VAC. But there's an extra 3% error if you don't really use a ground and just put your finger on the pad.

c muller actually did just read that, the full instructions fell behind the seat in my truck.
@cmuller1441
@cmuller1441 6 жыл бұрын
Watching other reviews of that device it seems that the extra 3% is optimistic because that really depends on the electric fields around the user and there's no way they can garanty that. I guess the marketing department wanted a fully 0 contact device. But it's impossible. You can't do accurate absolute measures without a known fixed reference.

It's an Electromagnetic Field Meter, they have been around since the 70's. Ghost hunters use them to detect "spirits". It detects using Field Effect Transistors (FETs). Mostly they seem to be for take less precise ambient readings such as static charges. It seems fluke adapted the existing technology to make more precise measurements. I'm curious to see how well this meter works in the long term. I wonder if it will get many false readings.

What happened if you were to measure more than 200 amps with the field sense jaws? Damage to the meter?
@MikesToolShed
@MikesToolShed Жыл бұрын
i doubt it would cause damage, it would show some kind of error or it would just stick at 200. If you have a conductor that fits in the jaws and over 200A, that wire is likely very very hot if not melting.

i just bought an 87v max and a t6-600 a couple weeks ago but theres 2 reasons im returning the t6. 1, the non removable wires means i have to have it in a case when not in use so the wires dont get damaged and the case means its taking up way more room than it has to in my work scooter and the whole reason i bought the t6 was so i could have a smaller multimeter at arms reach at all times. and 2, which is most important, why tf would they not add at least the tenths of a volt for at least DC? i can survive without hundredths or thousandths of a volt but at least tenths is mandatory.. why in the fluck on a device specifically meant for checking voltages would they force you to use whole numbers only? say i measure an 18650 for the liion battery packs i build for the scooters. If the t6 says 4v, cool, great, is that 4.0v? in which case i have to charge it more before sticking it in a pack with the rest of the cells.. or is it 4.9v where i need to discharge it immediately before it bursts into flames and burns down a multi billion dollar machine shop? if it says 2v, great, yay!! is that 2.9v where its perfectly fine or is it 2.0v where the cell is being damaged and degraded permanently? stupid ass fluke as usual makes a product thats almost great but throws in just one reason to hate it.. as much as we pay for these stupid thigs youd think theyd actually work like you wanted. and its not like the screen doesnt have the digits. its a 3 digit display and when you go to the amp setting the screen says "0.0" which means the decimal point is already there.. after 99v, sure, take away the tenth spot. like so many other meters do.. make it say 100v even without a tenth spot.. but under 100v theyre literally just not using the digits that are already there in the display.. all they had to do was not be stupid. it makes no sense and i wish i wouldve known this prior to buying it. i loved my overpriced basic ass 87v. I really like the overpriced 28ii, oops i mean 87v max and the fact its waterproof is gonna be great for working outside. But guess im going to some generic pen multimeter so i can have the basics of a multimeter, like not being stuck with whole digits only. i have a generic $30 multimeter also that has a huge color screen with a backlight and all the same features and accuracies of a fluke.. including the decimal point.. My desk multimeter has a small color screen and it can do down to the ten thousandths of a volt and it was a quarter of the price as the 87v.. these features are not hard to add to a product. fluke really pissed me off with this one.. if you cant tell from my rant nobody asked for. lol
